Abstract

This research examines conceptual metaphors as defined by Lakoff and Johnson, focusing on three types: structural, ontological, and orientational. The study analyzes an editorial from Goal.com titled, "Arsenal have no margin for error! Gunners told Liverpool showdown is 'must-win' in title race just eight games into 2024-25 season," using a qualitative approach grounded in cognitive semantic theory to explore the nuanced meanings conveyed through metaphor in sports commentary. Known for its in-depth and timely football analysis, Goal.com offers insights into how metaphors enhance fans' understanding of competitive sports narratives. Data collection involved close reading and note-taking, identifying instances of structural, ontological, and orientational metaphors, along with their source and target domains and image schemas. Findings reveal five structural metaphors, which use schemas such as Scale and Force to emphasize competitive intensity; four ontological metaphors, drawing on Container, Force, and Existence schemas to illustrate team pressures; and one orientational metaphor, using the Container schema to deepen spatial and relational context in the text. This study highlights the role of sports media metaphors in shaping public perception, making abstract concepts like competition and resilience more tangible. By framing sports challenges in relatable, high-stakes terms, these metaphors foster emotional engagement among fans, creating a shared understanding of a team's journey and pressures and underscoring the powerful influence of metaphor in sports narratives.

Abstract

This study delves into the theme of violence against women in Eka Kurniawan's novel Cantik Itu Luka  based on gender roles and violence experienced by women during and after Japan's periods of pre-independence and post-independence. The study aims to identify and analyze the various forms of violence and the underlying factors contributing to social deviance towards the protagonist, utilizing theoretical framework of cultural forms of violence by means of descriptive qualitative research to uncover the social phenomena of violence against women.  The study concludes that the novel provides a profound exploration of gender-based violence, encompassing direct, structural, and cultural dimensions of violence. The protagonist embodies the trauma of direct violence witnessed during the Japanese occupation, highlighting the gender-based discrimination prevalent against women. Structural violence is evident in societal disparities, while cultural violence permeates the narrative through deeply rooted attitudes and beliefs. The  novel also  delves into various aspects of discrimination faced by female characters in educational, domestic, and professional settings. The intertwining of historical contexts and personal stories within the novel serves as a potent commentary on women's ongoing struggles for justice and the enduring effects of discrimination. Ultimately, Cantik Itu Luka emerges as a poignant exploration of the intricate layers of gender-based violence and the resilience exhibited by women in confronting oppression.

Abstract

This study explores the translation of the song "Speechless" from Disney's Aladdin into the Indonesian version "Bungkam." Song translation is essential in connecting diverse cultures and allowing audiences to experience music in their native languages. It involves more than just converting words; it requires understanding cultural nuances and emotional depth. The research focuses on the methods used by translator Asmi Nurais, applying Peter Newmark's translation theories as a framework. The findings reveal that significant changes in imagery and phrasing reflect cultural adaptation, making the song more relatable to Indonesian listeners. Nurais employed a Free Translation method, prioritizing the song's themes of empowerment and emotional expression over strict adherence to the original lyrics. This approach ensures that the essence of the song is preserved while making it accessible to a new audience. This study contributes to the field of musical translation studies by highlighting the complexities involved in adapting lyrics for different cultural contexts. It emphasizes the role of translators as cultural mediators who navigate between languages and meanings. By showcasing the balance between fidelity to the source material and the need for cultural relevance, this research enriches our understanding of song translation. Ultimately, it underscores the importance of creative adaptation in making music resonate across borders, fostering emotional connections among listeners from different backgrounds.

Abstract

The novel Lelaki Harimau by Eka Kurniawan describes the life of Javanese people during the Japanese colonial period. In the novel, there are various kinds of social problems, one of which is crime. This research aims to describe the forms of crime in the novel. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques in the form of library research. The theory used is criminal psychology with a literary psychology approach to bridge the study of psychology and literature. The results of the research show that there are three forms of crime in the novel: domestic violence, sexual harassment and rape committed by the major characters. The domestic violence as well as raping is done by a husband towards his wife; something weird but that is the truth. Sexual harassment is experienced by other female characters owing to hegemony of power and money. The research shows that crime is one of the social problems that occurs in society. These crimes can be caused by various factors, such as poverty, social inequality and family conflict.

Abstract

This study examines the symbolic meanings of colors in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling, utilizing archetypal criticism and Carl Jung's theory of archetypal symbols. Through a qualitative analysis, the research explores how color functions as a tool for conveying deep thematic elements, enhancing the narrative, and reflecting the emotional and psychological states of the characters. Colors such as red, gold, green, black, white, and blue are shown to symbolize various abstract concepts, including friendship, bravery, immortality, power, love, and death. For instance, red and gold are associated with Gryffindor House values like courage and friendship, while green symbolizes both dark power and the protective love of Harry’s mother. Black is linked to death and darkness, and white signifies purity and sacrifice. By investigating these symbolic associations, the study reveals how Rowling employs color as a narrative device to enrich the reader's understanding of the characters' journeys and the larger themes of good versus evil, sacrifice, and the pursuit of truth. This research highlights the significance of color symbolism as an integral part of the storytelling in the Harry Potter series, providing deeper insights into the novel's thematic layers and the psychological motivations of its characters.

Abstract

The English-speaking skills of students at SMK SPP SNAKMA remain underdeveloped due to specific challenges in using the language within a vocational context. This study explores and analyzes these barriers to understand the underlying factors that hinder effective English communication among vocational students. Employing a qualitative approach, the research gathers data through interviews, observations, and questionnaires to capture students’ perspectives and real-time experiences with English language use. Findings reveal four primary obstacles: limited vocabulary, grammatical difficulties, speaking anxiety, and insufficient practice opportunities. These factors collectively impact students’ confidence and fluency in speaking English, which is critical in vocational settings where practical language skills are increasingly required. The study suggests that a more communicative teaching approach, combined with structured and frequent speaking practice, could significantly address these challenges. By focusing on interactive and supportive teaching methods, educators can create an environment that encourages active language use, helping students overcome barriers and develop essential English-speaking skills for their careers.

Abstract

This study examines the use of Theta roles in President Prabowo Subianto's inauguration speech delivered on October 20, 2024. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research investigates how Theta roles function within the framework of political communication. The data were derived from the official transcript of the speech. The analysis reveals that the Agent and Theme roles are the most frequently occurring, appearing in 83% and 66.6% of the relevant structures, respectively. The predominance of these roles underscores Prabowo’s rhetorical emphasis on action, leadership, and policy direction. These findings indicate that the speech serves not only as a medium for policy articulation but also as a strategic rhetorical tool aimed at building public trust and mobilizing support. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of linguistic patterns and argumentation strategies in Indonesian political discourse and offers a foundation for further exploration of Theta role application in political speech analysis.

Abstract

This study examines the use of guilt-tripping as a form of psychological manipulation in Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. The analysis centers on identifying both the causes and the types of guilt-tripping enacted by the novel’s manipulative character. Employing McPhillips’ (2022) theoretical framework on manipulative behavior, the research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, with a focus on character and narrative analysis. The findings reveal that the primary motivations for guilt-tripping include emotional dependency, a desire to manipulate and control others, and underlying feelings of low self-esteem and insecurity. In addition, two specific types of guilt-tripping behaviors are identified: love bombing and direct guilt inducement. These manipulative strategies are not only critical to the progression of the plot but also offer deeper insight into the psychological construction of the characters. The study contributes to the field of literary psychological criticism by illustrating how emotional manipulation is intricately embedded in the structure of detective fiction.

Abstract

Fake marriages, though often portrayed as harmless arrangements in fictional narratives, can lead to complex and far-reaching consequences in the lives of the characters involved. This study aims to explore the negative impacts of a fake marriage on the protagonist’s life in Tess Wakefield’s novel Purple Hearts. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study uses M.H. Abrams’ theory of literary analysis as its primary analytical framework. Additional relevant theories are incorporated to support the interpretation of the data. The analysis reveals that the fake marriage in the novel results in several negative consequences, including legal, financial, and emotional repercussions. The protagonist engages in the marriage to resolve personal financial difficulties. Despite these challenges, the characters—Cassie and Luke—eventually develop genuine affection, suggesting a transformative journey shaped by their experiences. The study highlights how a fake marriage, initially entered into for practical reasons, can evolve into a meaningful relationship, albeit through significant personal and relational struggles. These findings underscore the complex emotional and ethical dimensions of such arrangements in contemporary fiction.

Abstract

This study investigates the politeness strategies employed in interactions on Ganjar Pranowo's Instagram account, with particular attention to how linguistic choices shape digital political communication. It explores the strategies used by both followers and the politician to navigate social dynamics, express solidarity, and manage face-threatening acts within a public online setting. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis approach, the study examines 250 comments and responses, categorized according to Brown and Levinson’s four politeness strategies: bald-on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record. The findings reveal that positive politeness is the most commonly employed strategy among followers, reflecting a supportive and affiliative communicative style. Bald-on-record strategies are also frequently observed, indicating direct and unmitigated expressions. In contrast, Ganjar Pranowo primarily adopts bald-on-record strategies, suggesting a preference for clarity and communicative efficiency. Negative politeness and off-record strategies appear less frequently, underscoring the overall informal and inclusive nature of the digital interactions.
