Abstract

Religious liberalism in Islamic context has many possible meanings: first, the development of rational thought and attitude; second, the freedom to interpret religious texts; third, the belief that all religions encourage virtue and support the universal values of humanity; fourth, strengthening the separation thing what is profane (worldly) from the sacred (religious). The article aims to analyze some of the terms relating to the Liberal Islamic theology, that is: religious liberalism, secularism, secularization, and pluralism. In the aspect of religious texts interpretation, Islamic liberalism has at least three characteristics: first, patterned substantive, that is to understand the religious teachings are not limited to the scriptural reason (text) but rather on finding a more substantial meaning behind the text. Second, patterned contextual, i.e. to interpret religious texts on a variety of contexts. Third, patterned rational, i.e. to interpret religious teachings based on the reasoning/logic of healthy and humanitarian objective.

Abstract

Religious “splinter groups” can be found in any established religions, such as Islam, and become an interesting discourse to deal with today. The emergence of such groups can be viewed either as critics to the religious mainstream interpretation and/or practices or responses to the contemporary complex problems of modernity in terms of its relation to religious believe. The recent case of Ahmadiah and Al-Qiyadah Al-Islamiyah in Indonesia are among very controversial phenomena of “splinter groups” that resulted in debates and tensions among muslims communities. This article is aimed at observing the phenomena and answering some crucial questions, such as why they emerge, how do mainstreams of Indonesian muslims response to them, and what are their impacts on the future of intra and inter religious tolerance in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper explores the role of Salafi formal schools in the increasing influence and proliferation of Salafism in Lombok, East Indonesia, alongside the impacts of this process on educational culture and broader social contexts. Despite intense resistance from, and even violence by, traditionalist mainstream groups, the Salafi movement has developed steadily. This paper argues that the growth of Salafism in Lombok is influenced by contextualizing of proliferation strategies by integrating into Indonesian national education system and selecting of the greater Islamic traditions, rather than ideological and financial support from the Middle East, as it has been highlighted in previous studies and literature. By establishing officially certified schools and formal recognitions from the Indonesian government, the Salafi schools have found a way to successfully recruit a new young generation of Muslims in Lombok and beyond.

Abstract

The development of Islam in most parts of Indonesia, such as in Malay, is almost undistinguishable with the political development. There was a good relationship between sultan as the holder of political authority and ‘ulamâ’ as the holder of religious authority symbolized as “one diamond in one ring”. To strengthen his power, a sultan needs legitimacy from ‘ulamâ’ and vice versa, through a close reltionship with the sultan, an ulama can increase his religious authority. Based on the historical analyses, especially on the case of Sultanate of Riau-Lingga in the 18th-19th centuries, the relationship between ulama and sultan was not always in harmony as previously described. The relationship sometime depended on their needs, which from time to time, competitive, cooperative and contestive. Apart from any forms of relationship, this article reveals that there was a “sufistication” process occurred where the political power which was characteristically profane and secular, changed as an influence of the sufism teachings. Thus, what happened in Sultanate of Riau-Lingga proved that sufism is an important phenomenon which changed the historical color and intellectual literature in Indonesia

Abstract

The aim of liberal theology was, basically, to promote the freedom of thought. However, it also can be trapped into an authoritarian system leading to tyranny when the aim is forced. It was true in the case of Mu’tazilite, a sect that is considered the symbol of liberalism in Islamic theology. The sect, in one side, campaigned freedom of thought, but in other side, it also applied mihnah, a tool of measuring the state theology. Yet, when mihnah was applied, the people had no freedom, even the caliph also participated to impose the idea that the Qur'an was created. As a result of the implementation of mihnah, there was the emergence of a gap, prolonged anxiety and tension among the Islamic society. Hence, their opponents increased which in turn encouraged the Caliph al-Mutawakkil to launch a new policy to cancel the mihnah, then ordered the people to follow muhadditsīn, the majority people believing in the Hadits, as well as a forerunner to the birth of the term ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama’a.

Abstract

Of the classical problems in the discourse of Islam and politics is controversy on interpretation of Islamic Syarî‘ah, and there is no single or only one true definition of the term. The controversy is going worse when some groups of Muslim—with or without intervension and support of the ruling power—insist to have their opinion the true one and should be followed by others. This article is comparing the strategy and arguments used by the three Islam-based parties—PPP, PBB, and PKS—in the parliament of Indonesia when they respond the discourse of applying Islamic Syarî‘ah in Indonesia. They share opinion that the application of Islamic Syarî‘ah through state is a duty of every Muslim, but they differ one another in the way or strategy of realizing and making that come true. Different from PPP and PBB that struggle for adopting the Jakarta Carter into Indonesian 1945 Constitution, PKS (with PAN) suggest adopting Medina Carter. When the majority of parliament members refuses both suggestions, the three parties also take different ways responding the refusal. While PPP can understand the refusal and explicitly agree to no-amendment on the article 29 of Indonesian 1945 Constitution, PBB and PKS declare to be abstains. The controversy indicates the difficulty of unifying Muslim opinion and strategy relating to the how to position Islam in the context of state. The phenomena that occurs between the supporting and the refusing group is not only in terms of positivization of Islamic Syarî‘ah, but also in applying Islam. It ranges from the issues of struggle strategy to the decision of aspects of Syarî‘ah that can be adopted in or made positive law.

Abstract

Character building is important for every Muslim as the Prophet Muhammad SAW was sent to perfect the character (akhlāq). An attempt to instilling good characters, Islamic education should focus on two main issues, i.e. the content of knowledge and the methodology for imparting the knowledge. Muslim scholars have proposed the concept of knowledge in Islamic education. One of them is Imam al-Zarnūjī. He developed the basic principles of education in Islam and his teaching methodology which has been widely used in educational institutions and learning in the Muslim world. This article examines the ethical aspects of learning from al-Zarnūjī’s monumental work, Ta‘līm al-Muta‘allim Ṭarīq al-Ta‘allum, including intention (niyah), seriousness (jidd), respect (ta‘ẓim), and trust in Allah (tawakkul). Using the method of content analysis, this study argues that according to al-Zarnūjī, knowledge is a means for character building. The ethical aspect of learning as proposed by al-Zarnūjī is significant for the advancement and perfection of both individual and the society in this world and the Hereafter. Thus, teaching and learning in Islam put emphasis on knowledge understanding, ethical values and character building to produce good human beings (al-insān al- ṣālih).
