Abstract

Background: Okra (Abelmochus esculentus) belongs to Malvaceae family and is widely cultivated in Africa, India, America, and Brazil for its fibrous fruits containing round, white seeds. This study was carried out to assess the cytotoxicity, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the leaf extracts of Abelmoschus esculentus cultivated in north-western, Nigeria. Methods: The plant sample was collected, washed, identified, grounded into powder and extracted using solvent extractor with ethanol as solvent, and this was followed by fractionation using three more solvents of different polarities (starting with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and then methanol). The cytotoxicity of the extracts was assessed using Brine Shrimp Lethality assay; Antioxidant activity of the extracts was studied using DPPH radical scavenging assay method, while antimicrobial activity was determined using agar well diffusion method. Results: The cytotoxicity results showed n-hexane having highest activity (LC50 394.499 µg/ml), followed by methanol extract (LC50 538.098 µg/ml), ethyl acetate extract (LC50 2106.499 µg/ml), and then crude extract (LC50 5634.091 µg/ml) respectively. The results also revealed that the extracts possessed significant antioxidant activity, with crude extract showing highest activity (IC50 = 74.229 µg/ml), followed by methanol extract (IC50 = 83.396 µg/ml), ethyl acetate extract (IC50 = 126.159 µg/ml), and then n-hexane extract (IC50 = 138.936 µg/ml). The extracts revealed remarkable antimicrobial activity and were even more noticeable in antibacterial result at higher concentrations with ethyl acetate extract showing largest zone of inhibitions, followed by n-hexane extract, crude extract, and then methanol extract respectively. Conclusion: From the findings of this research study we have concluded that the leaf extracts Abelmoschus esculentus possesses antimicrobial and antioxidant activities and is also less toxic.

Abstract

Background: The skin is the outermost part of the body that functions as a barrier between humans and the environment. The structure of the skin is affected by various factors such as climate, age, gender, race, and location in the body. The skin consists of 3 main layers, namely the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous. In addition, the skin has sebaceous glands or oil glands located on the skin, hair, and nails. These glands function to maintain skin moisture, especially when they are active and developing during puberty. However, activity can also cause skin problems, such as warts, dermatitis, and acne vulgaris. Methods: The type of research conducted is observational analytical research on the Kendall's Tau design approach. The sampling technique is stratified random sampling. As many as 98 respondents were obtained who met the inclusion criteria of the research object. Results: Shows that the most commonly found sex is female. This study shows that there is no relationship between milk consumption and acne vulgaris. Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, there was no significant relationship between the frequency of milk consumption and acne vulgaris, the amount of milk consumption per day and per week, because milk contains zinc and vitamin A. Zinc functions as an anti-inflammatory agent in acne by inhibiting the growth of C. acnes bacteria, and milk contains vitamin D, so it has a pleiotropic effect that can prevent lesions in acne vulgaris.

Abstract

Background: The increasing number of elderly causes various health problems, one of which is hypertension. If hypertension is not well controlled it can cause psychological and physiological problems. The combination of Benson relaxation therapy and lavender aromatherapy is a non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to manage anxiety, sleep quality, and blood pressure. This study aims to determine the effects of lavender aromatherapy, Benson relaxation therapy, and their combination on anxiety levels, sleep quality, and blood pressure in elderly individuals with hypertension. Methods: The research design is quantitative with a quasi-experimental approach without a control group. The sampling selection in this study used purposive sampling. The sample consists of elderly individuals at Sentra Bekasi, totaling 90 respondents, divided into 30 respondents for each intervention. After interventions were carried out and data collected, data analysis was conducted using the MANOVA test. Results: p-value 0.000 indicating a significant effect of intervention type on sleep quality, anxiety, and blood pressure. The next test is the test of between-subjects effects, which shows a significant effect only on the variables of anxiety and blood pressure. The final test used is the Post Hoc Test (multiple comparisons), which indicates that the variables with significant values and a real difference in relation to the intervention are anxiety and blood pressure. Meanwhile, the variable of sleep quality does not show any real difference across each intervention. Conclusion: Overall, Lavender Aromatherapy is superior in reducing anxiety and blood pressure compared to the other two therapies.

Abstract

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the leading cardiovascular diseases and the number one cause of death in the world. World Health Organization (2020) Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which are the leading cause of death worldwide, are cardiovascular diseases. In 2017 an estimated 17.9 million people (31% of all deaths) died from cardiovascular disease. Methods: The research design used This research design is an analytic observational using a Cross-Sectional research design that will be conducted at the RSMY Heart Poly, in June-August 2024. The number of samples in this study were 100 respondents who fit the inclusion criteria of the researchers. The analysis used in this study is to use bivariate, univariate and multivariate analysis in finding the riskiest factors. Results: The results showed that there was an association between age, gender, occupation, family history) obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, smoking, physical activity with the incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in cardiac patients at the cardiac clinic of RSMY Hospital Bengkulu Province, with a P value <0.05, while the most dominant factor causing CAD was diabetes mellitus disease factor. Conclusion: The results showed that the dominant risk factors affecting the quality of life of CAD patients in the Cardiology Clinic of RSUD Dr. M. Yunus Bengkulu Province were diabetes mellitus, followed by hypertension and smoking. This study provides important insights for the development of CAD prevention and management programs in the community.

Conclusion: Fluroquinolones and Cephalosporins were the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in this study. Culture sensitivity test was carried out only in a limited number of cases, and present findings together with previous ones are suggestive of the need for periodic monitoring of antibiotic sensitivity pattern of the bacterial isolates to provide effective treatment and thereby to make it more cost effective particularly in the developing countries like Nepal. The continuous monitoring and reporting of prescribing pattern of antibiotics will surely help the physicians for effective treatment.

At Nambo Health Center, the number of vaccinations on March 30, 2022, has been recorded as many as 586 people, or 78.13% of the total 1st, 2nd, and 3rd vaccinations. This shows that vaccination achievements are still far from the vaccination target. Methods: As many as 750 people, this condition is due to controversy in the community regarding vaccinations, both related to safety, side effects, and the halalness of vaccines, as well as misinformation obtained by the public, resulting in negative perceptions of the COVID-19 vaccine, which makes them hesitant when they are vaccinated against COVID-19. This type of research is descriptive analytic with a cross-sectional study design. The population in this study was 8,327 people, with a total sample of 99 people using the Cluster Random Sampling technique. Data was analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: The results of the study found that there was a relationship between perception and public willingness to vaccinate against COVID-19 in the working area of the Nambo Health Center, X2 value = 8.523. Conclusion : There is a fairly strong relationship between family support and vaccine availability and there is a weak relationship between public perception and vaccine availability in the working area of the Nambo Health Center. It is hoped that health workers in the working area of the Nambo Health Center Will continue to explain to the public that it is important to follow the COVID-19 vaccination.
