Abstract

It is now a trend to research the teacher's perspectives of using technology in a language class. However, the reasons why teachers keep perspectives are not well studied. It is known in the view of naive psychology, that what a person regards something matters more than how it actually is.  To view success or failure, it is very humane to make excuses or reasons for how it happened. In the case of teacher’s reluctance of using technology in a language class, the present study aimed at explaining what could have underlain their resistance to using technology in their language classes, especially from the view of attribution theory. The study applied a qualitative approach using the phenomenology research design. The participants of the study were three high school language teachers from Situbondo, Indonesia. Added to the researcher as the primary research instrument were the interview and field notes. The findings of the study indicate that teachers have personally considered their resistance as something stable and uncontrollable. They believe that they become resistant because they do not have control over their ability as they believe the younger fellows are gifted with the ability to use IT fluently in the classroom. The findings imply that teachers are reluctant to use technology in the class because they fear failure when using technology in the classroom. It suggests that the magnitude of teachers’ attribution could determine what they could achieve in their professional development.

Second, the lecturer provides listening tasks that arouse students’ interest. The lecturer gives different inputs, such radio, TV, songs, lectures, advertisement. Third, the lecturer gives extra time in each section to motivate the students in answering the task. Fourth, the lecturer provides listening task’s background knowledge. Besides, the lecturer gives feedback to increase students’ motivation. Fifth, lecturer should encourage their students to develop listening strategies, such as predicting, asking for clarification, and using non-verbal cues to improve learners’ listening comprehension ability.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to describe the implementing of experiential leaning in writing class. Writing is the process of expressing ideas into a good writing and composing the ideas into a proper arrangement. Writing is one of language abilities that is taught in the school. The students should be mastered some text types in writing class, such as descriptive text. Descriptive text is a text which says what a particular thing, person or place is like. In the writing process, the students face some problems in writing, such as finding ideas, developing ideas, and arranging ideas into good composition. In this case, the teacher uses a new method to solve that problems. The teachers use experiential learning to enhance the students’ writing. Experiential learning is a learning method where the educators engage the students to learn through experience directly to enhance students’ knowledge and skills. It is also called learning by doing. The steps of implementing experiential learning are doing, reflecting, analyzing, generating and application. In descriptive writing, the students can describe the object easily because they use real experience. The students also feel more enthusiasm in learning process. Therefore, hopefully the students can expand their writing in good construction.

Abstract

Corpus has gained its popularity in linguistics over the past five decades, from the computerized storage of English language in Survey of English Usage in 1959 to the ongoing development of Corpus of Contemporary American English. Because of the huge size of actual language data compiled in corpora, many linguists and language teachers working with English language have benefited from them in linguistic research and teaching practice. Up to now, there are innumerable English online corpora recording data from various genres, modes, and regions as well as corpus tools to analyze self-compiled corpus. The massive development of corpora, however, has not been widely discussed among English language researchers and practitioners in Indonesia, let alone in English language teaching. Although linguistics and language teaching are two inseparable and firmly related fields, corpus as a concept and product of linguistics seems ignored or even avoided. This paper then aims to review the nature of corpus and how it is used to assist linguistic analysis. More importantly, this paper discusses another possible application of corpus, e.g., the use of corpus in teaching language. Considering the nature and the benefits of using corpora, it is then important to promote the use of corpus to enhance English language teaching and learning, either directly in the classrooms or indirectly in materials development.

Total physical response method was also implemented in some exercises within the book to engage students’ attention and comprehension towards English learning. The data gathered in this study were collected through questionnaires, pre-test, and post-test. Based on the data analysis, the research finding shows that the cultural-based English textbook for elementary students is feasible. Feasibility obtained from the book was very good. Percentage of assessment by the content expert reached 82 % and the media expert was 87%. The calculation of T-paired test showed that there was a difference in learning achievement between the pre-test and the post-test score, which was 70.00 to 78.00 or increased 15%. Thus, there is an increasing score and this cultural – based textbook is effective to be used by the elementary students.
