Abstract

Nagari Cupak is a sub-district in Solok Regency with a big rice field that can be developed to increase farmers’ wealth. The development of rice field potential in Nagari Cupak can be conducted with agricultural extension to farmers. One of the outreach topics that can deliver to farmers is the importance of the efficient functioning of farmer groups (as a learning class, as production units, and as a place to cooperate). In this situation, the topic regarding conserving water and soil in rice fields for efficient rice production in Nagari Cupak is another one that may be discussed with farmers. The agricultural extension was carried out in Jorong Panyalai, Nagari Cupak, Gunung Talang District, on Thursday, 10 August 2023. The method used in community service is the lecture method. Furthermore, it continued with a question-and-answer session. The object of this community service is to join farmer groups in Nagari Cupak, which consists of 18 farmer groups. These activities showed that the farmers did not optimise the group’s function because they only used it as a gathering place. Farmer groups also shared the issues they frequently encountered, and solutions were offered. In addition, agricultural extension activities were continued with practice regarding soil and water conservation on land provided by the Nagari Cupak Government. The farmers’ persistence can be seen in their enthusiasm for this extension activity until the end of the extension. In order to enable farmers to practice soil and water conservation on their own, they also requested that Extension Officers continue to support them.

Abstract

The practice of cultivating Galo-galo bees has been steadily developing each year in West Sumatra. All parts of the Galo-galo bee, from honey to propolis, can be effectively utilized to produce commercial products, thereby enhancing the community's economy. Community service activities at Sungkai Green Park Ecotourism (ESGP) in Lambung Bukit Village, Padang, assist the community in cultivating Galo-galo bees. These activities involved providing colonies, conducting socialization sessions, offering mentoring and discussions, and collecting data on local plants and insects. Additionally, knowledge regarding the use and processing of honey and propolis was shared. These community service activities, conducted from September to December 2023, have had a positive impact, particularly on the community around the ESGP area. This aligns with the goal of the initiative, which is to provide education and hands-on practice in Galo-galo bee cultivation.

Abstract

A low level of knowledge related to the causative factors, signs and symptoms, dangers, prevention, and treatment of diabetes mellitus (DM) causes an increasing number of DM sufferers worldwide, including in Indonesia. This community service activity aims to increase public knowledge, especially in the office environment, about DM disease and conduct early detection of DM. Participants in the community service activities consisted of 90 employees of an Accountant's office in North Jakarta. The community service activities included education about DM disease, tests of blood sugar, and question-and-answer discussions about DM. The results showed an increase in knowledge by 20.3% based on the score obtained from the pretest compared to the posttest. Based on the blood sugar test results, 98.9% of participants had blood sugar levels within normal limits, 1.1% were below average (hypoglycemia), and 1.1% were at risk of DM. This activity concludes that educational activities can increase participants' knowledge about DM disease, so it is hoped that the community can implement a healthy lifestyle to prevent DM disease and reduce the number of DM sufferers.

Abstract

The low productivity of smallholder dairy cattle in Indonesia is due to limited capital and feed management. Limited land ownership, resulting in feeding from low-quality natural grasses and agricultural waste, limits milk production. Farmers rely on expensive commercial concentrate feed to improve feed quality. Efforts to improve productivity and milk quality on smallholder farms include utilizing low-cost, high-nutrient forages. Legume forages have the potential to replace commercial concentrates in dairy cow rations because they contain high crude protein (CP) and can increase livestock productivity. Using legumes as a substitute for commercial concentrates can reduce milk production costs by up to 20%. In Indonesia, the most widely cultivated legume crop is Gliricidia. Harapan Makmur Farmer Group is one of the few dairy cattle groups established in Padang City in 2011. The problem of the dairy cattle business is the high feed price, some of which comes from commercial feed. The activity method uses counseling, discussion, and the practice of making sweet corn silage mixed with Gliricidia. These activities concluded that farmers were utilizing forage from legumes to substitute commercial concentrates, and they were skilled in processing corn straw waste from sweet corn cultivation and Gliricidia into silage.

Abstract

Indonesia is an important country that produces essential oils that are widely used in fragrance cosmetic products. The use of local essential oils for cosmetics needs to be introduced to the youth generation with the aim that they do not just become consumers. Youth organisations in Kerinci have many activities to improve their skills and abilities for a better future. Collaboration between the university and the youth organisation was achieved by providing training on doing cosmetic product training on making cosmetic products. The product uses essential oils called body mist. Nowadays, the youth still know very little about the manufacturing process of cosmetics products. To provide further benefits, this community service activity collaborated with BBPOM in Padang, West Sumatra, to explain cosmetic safety and the registration process of cosmetic products. With this series topic in this training and outreach-related cosmetics, it is hoped that it can increase business ideas for young people who are members of the Sakti Alam Kerinci Organisation.

Abstract

School-age children are very susceptible to cases of bullying. Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior that is carried out repeatedly by physically or mentally hurting someone; it could be carried out by a child or a group of children against other children. Bullying behavior has a negative and detrimental impact not only on victims but also on perpetrators. This impact is not only felt during the period when bullying behavior occurs but can continue until the perpetrator and victims enter adulthood. Based on preliminary data from interviews and observations at State Senior High School 11 Padang City, several cases of bullying were found between seniors and juniors or classmates. Some of the behaviors identified were calling friends bad names, threatening them, and making fun of them. As a result, victims experience anxiety and fear and even lose their confidence in participating in school activities. It is hoped that psychoeducation can be an intervention to increase students' knowledge of bullying behavior. Psychoeducation is carried out face-to-face in the hall. The material provided includes types of bullying behavior, the negative impacts of bullying, their roles and strategies, and what needs to be done when they see bullying. Psychoeducation was given to 347 students who took part in P5 phase F. The research method used in the study is a one-group pretest-posttest design. The results of the analysis carried out using the Wilcoxon test showed that there was a significant increase in scores before and after psychoeducation was carried out. It showed that psychoeducation was quite effective in improving students' understanding of bullying.

Abstract

Indonesia is a relatively large market for the cosmetics industry in the hair care category. Teenagers and young adults are among the dominant segments in cosmetic consumption. Hair and scalp problems often experienced are hair loss and unhealthy hair structure. This problem can be overcome with hair serum. This dosage form is attractive because it can be purchased freely and is quite promising due to its high active substance content. Various types of hair serums are available on the market so that they can be adjusted based on user preferences. The high level of public consumption of hair serum needs to be balanced with education regarding hair serum. The education process uses lecture and workshop methods related to identifying hair problems, the nutrition needed by hair, and the types and formulation of hair serum. The workshop was conducted directly by involving participants in producing the hair serum. The educational process was attended by 24 students aged 19-22 years, 21% coming from outside Atma Jaya and 79% from internal Atma Jaya. Gender includes 19% of men and the rest of women. The educational process increased the understanding of 92% of participants, with an average score from 5.9 to 9.75. As many as 96% of participants were very interested and stated that this workshop supported the theory that had been given to make it easier to understand.

Abstract

The Nagari Tageh concept, originally initiated earlier, has evolved into a broader scope, extending beyond the confines of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the overarching goal of accelerating the realization of Nagari Mandiri. The Tanjung Raya community's economic hardships, notably the Fish Farmers of Lake Maninjau, prompted our community engagement team to fortify the ‘New Nagari Tageh’ concept. The activity commenced with developing customized posters catering to the community's specific needs, encompassing imagery, color schemes, and language. Those posters served as a medium for publicizing the Nagari Tageh program in the Agam Regency. Furthermore, our community engagement team engaged in intensive discussions with the Agam Regency government, involving the Regional Development and Planning Agency (DPMD), to gain a better understanding of the on-ground situations and conditions faced by fish cage farmers in the Tanjung Raya subdistrict. Subsequently, our team provided counseling and further guidance to the fish cage farmers, ensuring the successful implementation of the ‘New Nagari Tageh’ concept. This holistic approach aimed to equip the community with the necessary knowledge and education to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic across various aspects of community life. Furthermore, it sought to rejuvenate the economic prospects of the fish cage farmers in the Tanjung Raya subdistrict, embodying the essence of the ‘New Nagari Tageh’ concept.

Abstract

The community service program aims to improve the productivity of cattle farming in the Cendana farmer group in Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra. The program focuses on raising awareness about the importance of providing minerals as a crucial component of animal feed. Minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium play a significant role in the growth and health of cattle. The program results reflect an improvement in farmers' understanding of the role of minerals in animal nutrition. It is expected that they will be able to enhance cattle productivity by ensuring the fulfillment of mineral requirements in their feed. This program has the potential to support sustainable farming efforts by preventing mineral deficiencies in cattle. The training imparted theoretical knowledge and taught proper mineral selection, correct dosages, and cattle's health and productivity benefits. This program encourages livestock owners to apply their newfound knowledge in their day-to-day farming practices. This community service program has the potential to significantly improve the quality and well-being of farmers in the region and support the overall growth of the livestock sector.
