Abstract

The development of interest in Japanese popular culture, especially cosplay and anime, among young people in Jember has shown a significant increase over time. This study aims to describe the development of cosplay culture in Jember and the factors that influence it. The research methods used are direct observation of cosplay events, interviews with cosplayers and event organizers, and analysis of cosplay community social media. Using Joseph Nye's soft power theory and Jean Baudrillard's hyperreality, this study found that the cosplay trend in Jember has become a medium for cultural expression and identity for young people, especially through various cosplay events and competitions held in shopping centers, tourist destinations, educational institutions, hotels, and cafes with events including Coswalk Competition, Cosplay Perform, JSong Competition, cover dance and sales of anime, manga, and game merchandise. The results of the study indicate the existence of hyperreality, namely cosplayers bringing to life the fictional characters they play, thus providing space for escapism and creativity. This study also found the role of cosplay as a form of Japanese cultural soft power that is accepted by the local community in Jember. Keywords: cosplay, Jember, Japanese popular culture, soft power, hiperreality

Abstract

Abstract

Song lyric translation is a complex process that involves not only linguistic aspects but also musicality and cultural acceptability in the target language. This study aims to analyze the translation techniques used in the Japanese versions of the songs Arjuna and Bento, based on Molina and Albir’s (2004) translation techniques. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with textual analysis conducted on the original Indonesian lyrics and their Japanese translations. The findings reveal that 13 translation techniques were utilized in both songs, with different dominant techniques corresponding to the characteristics of each song. Arjuna, which has a romantic and poetic theme, predominantly employs established equivalence, amplification, and transposition to preserve the song’s aesthetics and emotional meaning. In contrast, Bento, which carries a strong social critique, primarily employs modulation, adaptation, reduction, and linguistic compression to align its meaning with Japanese expressive norms. These findings suggest that in song lyric translation, the choice of translation techniques is significantly influenced by the song’s theme, syntactic structure, rhythm, and cultural acceptability in the target language. This study is expected to contribute to research on song lyric translation and provide insight for translators in adapting songs across languages while maintaining their meaning, aesthetics, and musicality.

Abstract

The Japanese language has many vocabulary words, verbs, and adjectives that have similar meanings. One of them is a verb. Examples of verbs that are synonymous in Japanese are gakkari suru and ki o otosu. Both words have the same meaning, namely 'disappointed.' This is sometimes confusing for learners who still don't understand the differences. This study aims to find out the meaning of the verbs gakkari suru and ki o otosu in Japanese sentences and to find out if the two verbs can be replaced by each other. We analyzed the meaning of the verbs gakkari suru and ki o otosu using Hirose's (1994) theory. The method in this study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data source used in this study is the corpus nlb.ninjal.ac.jp, with data in the form of Japanese sentences that use the verbs gakkari suru and ki o otosu. We collected the data using the Simak method and the recording technique (Mahsun in Fauzah: 2022). Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that there are similarities and differences in the use of the verbs gakkari suru and ki o otosu in Japanese sentences. In general, the verbs gakkari suru and ki o otosu can replace each other, even though there will be sentences that change their meaning. For sentences that are subjective in nature, the pronouns ki o otosu cannot be applied, and for command sentences, the two verbs gakkari suru and ki o otosu can replace each other. Gakkari suru and ki o otosu have the same meaning of disappointment because something with negative nuances happens, such as disappointment due to regret or unwanted things.
