Abstract

This study aimed to investigate teachers' perceptions about the need to develop critical thinking tests. The research method used quantitative descriptive. Research involved 20 biology teachers who taught at the senior high school in Riau. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire accompanied by a discussion with the teacher. The questionnaire contained questions regarding the teacher's knowledge of critical thinking, the availability of critical thinking instruments, and their implementation in learning. Data analysis was carried out in a quantitative descriptive. The results of the study show that the teachers’ knowledge of critical thinking is developing. The teacher also explained that it is crucial for students to have critical thinking skills so that measurements need to be taken. The availability of instruments to measure critical thinking when viewed from the percentage of teachers who provide them is 70%. In its implementation, the teacher makes critical thinking questions sourced from the question bank, articles, and books. The questions prepared by the teacher are also able to measure critical thinking even though they do not yet cover all aspects of critical thinking. Based on the research results, it can be recommended that the development of critical thinking tests can be carried out by the aspects of critical thinking (basic clarification, bases for a decision, inference, advanced clarification, supposition and integration, and strategies and tactics) and in line with the material being studied at school.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the reading literacy competence of students in class VIII junior high school in Pangkajene and Islands Regency to find, understand, and evaluate information from reading texts. The research used the descriptive quantitative method. The population in this study were all class VIII students spread throughout Pangkajene and Islands Regency were divided into urban, mountainous and island areas totaling 114 schools where the sample selection used purposive sampling and cluster sampling techniques. The technique for collecting data is the test technique. The research instrument was PISA’s questions in 2021. The test PISA’s results showed that 26.7- 60% of students in Class VIII from the three schools in Pangkajene and Islands Regencies had very low competence in finding information, with a score of <54. Then in understanding the reading text, they could only obtain an average score of 33.03. As for the ability to evaluate text, 96.6% of students were in the low category, and only 3.4% were in the high category. This research indicated that students at the junior high school level needed the PISA assessment system to improve the quality of educational competence in Indonesia towards international education standards in the 21st century, especially in reading literacy. The PISA assessment focuses on improving the quality of teaching by teachers and learning in individual students. So that regular PISA assessments can help all students to achieve high competence if the government, school principals and teachers work together to implement and evaluate the PISA assessment on the reading literacy method.

Abstract

This study aims to examine individual differences, using gender as the exploratory variable and age as the covariate on academic interest among Indonesian high school students learning English. The research used a quantitative method. Data were collected virtually using an online questionnaire from 324 learners in four private urban high schools. The instrument used was the Academic Interest Scale for Adolescents (AISA). The process of data analysis consisted of confirmatory factor analysis, calculating Cronbach’s alpha, descriptive statistics, MANOVA, and MANCOVA. Four constructs were found valid and reliable: emotion, value, knowledge, and engagement. After validating the interest scale, data analysis disclosed the following results. Firstly, among the four constructs of academic interest, the value dimension was the highest and the knowledge factor the lowest, whereas emotion and engagement were in the middle position. Secondly, student gender differentiated significantly only in engagement. Thirdly, only the correlation between age and engagement was significant and positive in academic interest and student age. Lastly, considering student age, all the constructs except knowledge were differentiated by gender, where girls outperformed boys. These findings are valuable inputs for teachers, policymakers, and educational researchers in dealing with student language learning in Indonesian high schools.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the attitudes of lecturers in online learning in the environment of the South Sumatra Private Islamic Religious University. The research method used is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The subject of this study is a lecturer who teaches at the South Sumatra Private Islamic Religious College and the chairman of the PTKIS South Sumatra Forum. Data collection techniques through interviews, observation and documentation. Data analysis uses the model formulated by Creswell, first reading the entire data, second doing coding, third applying the coding process, fourth describing the theme to be presented in the qualitative report, and fifth interpreting the data. Based on the results of the study, it was found that online learning has not been accepted as an ideal learning system because it is considered ineffective to be implemented in the environment of the South Sumatra Private Islamic Religious University. This is caused by several factors, namely, 1) inadequate digital infrastructure and financial capabilities, 2) lecturers' technological competence that has not been maximized, 3) A more emphasized factor is the desire to maintain a face-to-face system to maintain an emotional or inner connection between lecturers and students that is considered better than virtual interaction. Islamic education actually has dynamic principles that open up opportunities to adapt to the development of science and technology. Suppose it relates to curriculum, media or learning tools and methods. Then the solution is to use a blended learning model.

Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy and effects of Kolb's experiential learning (EL) model and students' scientific field groups on their innovativeness in business development. (1) Humanities and Social Science, and (2) Science and Technology are the scientific field groups. A quasi-experimental quantitative approach with a 2 x 2 factorial design was used in this study. This study's sample encompassed active Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of the University of Mataram enrolling for entrepreneurship courses which were taken using random sampling after commensuration processes. The data collection instrument used to collect data on students' innovativeness is a project-based assessment based on indicators of innovativeness in developing products and digital marketing. The results of the instrument test fulfilled the validity and reliability requirement. All data were analyzed statistically by descriptive statistics and comparative analysis using the ANOVA test, which was preceded by an analysis requirement test. The study results showed an interaction effect of the EL model and students' scientific field on students' innovativeness. In addition, Kolb's EL model also directly affects students' innovativeness, while the scientific field group does not. Nevertheless, the data showed that the Science and Technology group innovates better than the others. The theoretical implication of this study was that EL has a strong theoretical framework for entrepreneurial learning, so it needs to be expanded through further studies.
