Abstract

Translanguaging, a practice that recognises and utilizes  multilingual students’ linguistic repertoires has emerged as a crucial approach in challenging traditional language policies, particularly in the South African educational landscape.Despite its embrace, a colonial stance still persists in teaching practices. Through a critical analysis of teaching materials used in an academic literacy course, this paper explores how translanguaging is currently being used in teaching and learning. Findings reveal a tension in the sense that even though students’ language practices are acknowledged, the materials still maintain a dominant position for English. This highlights the need to move beyond a simplistic view of multilingualism towards a more holistic embrace of translanguaging.Set against this background, this research argues that translanguaging can bridge the abyssal divide created by colonialism. It emphasizes the unifying potential of translanguaging, fostering an educational landscape that celebrates South Africa's rich linguistic diversity and cultural heritage. Ultimately, the study calls upon educators to move beyond the limitations of standardized languages and fully embrace translanguaging as a transformative force for decolonization. At the end, the paper calls for further research.

Abstract

The importance of observation report text writing skills among vocational students cannot be underestimated, as it is a basic competency that supports the development of their academic literacy. However, at SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaru, several obstacles were found such as low student motivation and lack of time for effective learning, which hindered the mastery of observation report text writing skills. This study aims to explore the effect of ChatGPT-based Constructivist Learning model in improving observation report text writing skills. Using mixed methods with sequential explanatory design, this study involved 68 students who were divided into experimental and control groups. The results showed that the ChatGPT-based Constructivist Learning model significantly improved the skill of writing observation report text compared to the conventional method. Qualitative data analysis also supported the quantitative findings that students and teachers faced challenges in digital literacy such as difficulties in understanding the user interface or how to interpret the feedback provided. However, this technology has great potential to improve writing skills if implemented well. This study concludes that the integration of ChatGPT-based Constructivist Learning model in learning can improve observation report text writing skills, although habituation in utilizing digital literacy is needed so that it can be implemented effectively and continuously.

Abstract

Learning Javanese script is considered an outdated and boring lesson. This paradigm of boring and obsolete Javanese script lessons must be changed into a modern, interesting, and enjoyable learning experience. One way to do this is by developing a Joyful Learning-based model for Javanese language instruction. Joyful Learning is a concept of enjoyable learning. The development of a Joyful Learning-based model for Javanese language instruction is urgent and necessary because the learning model currently used by students needs to employ the principles of Joyful Learning, resulting in students feeling bored, tired, and unmotivated to learn. Additionally, Javanese language instruction is viewed as a good means to develop the character of the nation's children, as it contains values of morality and politeness. The research design used is the ADDIE Research and Development design, with the steps of analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating. This study uniquely integrates traditional games into the Joyful Learning model. The result of the study is creating a Joyful Learning-based model for Javanese script instruction. The components of this model include the social system, reaction principles, support system, instructional and incidental impacts, and syntagmatic. The syntagmatic model of Joyful Learning-based Javanese script instruction includes an introduction, material delivery, games for writing sentences, games for reading paragraphs in Javanese script, formative assessment, and reflection. The learning model has been tested at SMPN 12 Semarang. The results of the school trial indicate that the Joyful Learning-based Javanese script instruction model is effective for learning.

Abstract

In the context of the 2024 presidential election campaign, the proliferation of memes as a medium of public and supporter expression has become increasingly prominent. Memes serve as a vehicle for political commentary, often reflecting public sentiment and opinion. However, a significant concern arises from the pervasive use of linguistic impoliteness within these memes. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of linguistic impoliteness in memes related to the 2024 presidential election. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method, data were collected from a variety of meme images sourced from the internet. The analysis reveals that linguistic impoliteness in these memes manifests in several forms, including bald on-record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm, and the withholding of politeness. These forms of impoliteness not only reflect the aggressive nature of political discourse but also have the potential to incite conflict among different political factions. The findings suggest a need for more responsible meme usage, particularly in politically charged contexts, to foster a healthier and more constructive political dialogue. The study concludes that while memes are a powerful tool for political expression, their potential to exacerbate tensions should not be overlooked. Implications for future research include exploring strategies for mitigating the negative impact of impoliteness in online political communication.
