Abstract

This study examines translation strategies and the impact of translation strategies on translated texts produced by master's students of the English program at the campus of UNDIKMA Mataram. This study used a qualitative approach that included recording methods, specifically internal data recording. The data collected were 10 products translated from English to Indonesian by the requester.  The English translation includes 390 words.  They are allowed to use traditional or offline/electronic dictionaries when translating text. The study used several translation strategies, which are translation methods (literal translation and oblique translation) and translation processes (borrowing, calque translation, literal translation, modulation, transposition, equivalence, and translation).  Transform).  The results show that master's students tend to use local strategies and literal translation methods in translation.  This affects the quality of the translation, making it less natural in the target language.  In addition, translation errors also occur due to wrong/incorrect word selection, leading to failure to convey the message in the text source. The result of this research expected will bring valuable contributions to future research and courses serving translation activities.

Abstract

This research is about the analysis of the American teenagers’ slang translation strategies in Easy A movie subtitles based on Gottlieb’s theory. Translation is seen as important aspect in helping the target communicant understand the content and messages of the utterance. Besides, slangs, though hardly ever discussed in classroom setting, are commonly used in social context, and in movies. Easy A is a movie talking about school life which is close to students’ daily activities. This research aims to know the English slangs appeared in Easy A movie, the strategies the translator uses in translating his or her subtitles of the slang expressions from the English language as the source language (SL) to the Indonesian language as the target language (TL), and the most strategies used.. In this study, the researcher uses a qualitative method to analyse the data. The slang expressions are analysed by selecting and marking the utterances and text containing slang expressions. To support the research, the researcher uses some online dictionaries to determine if the slang is originally from America and to find each slang meaning. The result of this research shows, there are seven strategies used by the translator or subtitle in translating slang expressions: Expansion, Paraphrase, Transfer, Imitation, Condensation, Decimation, and Deletion. Three strategies are not found. They are Transcription, Dislocation, and Resignation strategy. Based on this result, the most often used by the translator is Transfer strategy. It is because the translator translated every slang expression completely. Paraphrase strategy is in second place. It indicates that the translator attempts to make the slang expressions easier to be understood by the audience.
Terminology Development through Translanguaging as an Intellectualisation Strategy for African Languages in Andragogic Contexts Nhongo, Raphael

Abstract

Terminology has been identified as one of the impediments towards the intellectualisation and the subsequent use of African languages as languages of teaching and learning in specialised fields of knowledge. Although some terminologies have so far been compiled for specialised fields of knowledge, they seem not to be receiving acceptance in the functional spaces particularly the andragogic and pedagogic contexts. The central argument of the paper is that terminology needs to be created through the use of African languages in the process of teaching and learning in andragogic spaces instead of creating them through intuition, translation or knowledge of language. The communicative theory of terminology is used in the paper to argue for the adoption of specialised subject fields terminologies that are created in functional spaces. A sample of terms selected from isiNdebele and isiZulu that have so far been created for use in physics were used to critique the strategies that were adopted in their compilation. Terms for use in teaching and learning need not to be prescribed to the users but they should be harvested from functional academic spaces and then compiled for the writing of books and use in the classroom. A systematic way where the end users are involved in the process of term creation for specialised subject fields needs to be adopted.

The presented report only consisted three out of four steps, in which disseminating was excluded. Defining step is the step of formulating the idea through need analysis. The designing step is the step of mapping the graduate learning outcome to the subject learning outcome which is associated to the result of need analysis. The developing step was carried out through the activity of material development and expert validation. The experts were three individuals with expertise in material development. the instrument used was validated.  Instrument used was in form of questionnaire refers to likert scale. The result of expert validation indicate that the teaching material was suitable for use, with an average score of 90,0.

This article critically analyses the status of teaching and learning African languages in  2 institutions of higher education in  Kenya and  South Africa. It adopted a qualitative methodology and comparative case study as a design. It generated data through documents analysis . The study revealed that the two countries are not at the same level in implementing African languages in their curriculum. Whereas  universities in South Africa have African languages Programmes, the Universities in Kenya have no such programmes. Moreover, there are several challenges , including lack of resources and infrastructure to support language instruction and research, as well as a need for greater support for African languages in academic institutions. Abstract

Writing explanatory text is a complex skill and requires a deep understanding of the topic, so strategies are needed that can help. This research aims to test the effectiveness of the 3W2H strategy in learning to write explanatory texts in high school. The research design uses quantitative with a quasi-experimental design. The research population was all class XI students at SMAN 1 Mojolaban, totaling 354 students. Samples were taken using cluster random sampling techniques so that 42 students were obtained as the experimental class and 48 students as the control class. Data is collected through performance tests. Research validity uses content validity, namely consulting experts. The collected data was then analyzed using ANOVA and Scheffe's test. The research results showed that the average pre-test and post-test results for writing explanatory text for the experimental group using the 3W2H strategy were 58.48 and 83.14, while for the control group it was 61.92 and 70.3. These results show that the experimental group increased by 42.21%, while the control group increased by 13.53%. Apart from that, the p value is <0.001 or smaller, so it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the posttest results of the experimental and control groups. Furthermore, the Scheffe test results show a p value <0.01 or smaller than 0.05, so the research shows that the 3W2H strategy is more effective than conventional strategies. These results indicate that the 3W2H strategy can be an alternative in writing explanatory text.

Abstract

Understanding speech act production in EFL classroom interactions is crucial for enhancing teaching effectiveness and student engagement, as it sheds light on how language is used to convey meaning and manage social interactions in the learning environment. The purpose of this study was to analyze the speech act types and functions that were used by an EFL teacher and their students during classroom interactions. Observational data was collected and analyzed according to Conversation Analysis standards (CA). The findings of the study revealed that the types of speech acts produced by the teacher and students were influenced by their respective roles and statuses. Although the students produced fewer speech acts, they served the same functions as the teacher's speech acts in terms of controlling and managing classroom interactions. As a result, the speech acts of both the students and teacher distributed authority in different ways during turn-taking and commodity exchanges. The practical knowledge and pedagogical use of the teacher-student relationship as a unique social event in the classroom context has the potential to effectively manage classroom interactions.

Abstract

This study delves into the early language development of a 25-month-old toddler, emphasizing phonological aspects encompassing consonants, vowels, and diphthongs. Conducted in Palembang in December 2023, the research employs a qualitative methodology utilizing a case study approach. The investigation aims to address the crucial role of phonological development in early language acquisition and its implications for linguistic theory and pedagogy. By focusing on the phonological repertoire of a toddler identified as "M. AH," this study contributes to bridging the gap in research regarding early phonological development in Bahasa Indonesia-speaking children. Key research questions include identifying the range of phonological elements mastered by the toddler and exploring potential factors influencing their linguistic development. The analysis reveals the toddler's adeptness in articulating various phonemes, including 14 consonants, six vowels, and several diphthongs, within their linguistic environment. These findings shed light on the intricate process of early language acquisition and underscore the importance of understanding phonological development in diverse linguistic contexts. Methodologically, the research utilizes direct observation and recording techniques to capture and analyze the toddler's linguistic interactions and productions. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the early stages of language acquisition, offering implications for both research and practice in child language development and education.
