Abstract

It has been two years since the Ministry of Education and Culture in Indonesia mandated an Emancipated curriculum to foster independent learning after the COVID-19 pandemic. All of the aspects and policies in school need to adapt to the new version of the learning and teaching process. The use of Project-based learning in this era is imperative things which can help students and teachers be more interactive in dealing with global skills. This approach can guide the teachers more easily understand the topic by using projects that relate to their workplace. This research is designed to investigate the teachers' views on practicing project-based learning in classroom activities. This case study used document analysis in the form of a lesson plan to check their understanding of project-based learning. The semi-structured interviews were also held to collect deep data analysis with two teachers at the secondary level who had already implemented project-based learning during the learning process. The findings showed that project-based learning can assist the teacher in developing an engaging and collaborative classroom that supports both the teachers' and students' capacity for critical Thinking. Interestingly, the study revealed that the teachers realized that the challenges in applying Project-based learning might derive from the number of meetings in one project.

Abstract

Task-based speaking tasks offer significant benefits to students by providing opportunities to use the target language to convey meaning and engage with real-world topics and tasks. This approach allows students to draw upon their prior knowledge and background experiences to express opinions and ideas effectively. In line with this, the present study aims to investigate the effects of Task-Based Speaking Instruction (TBSI) on the speaking perceptions of students at Shambu Secondary School during speaking skill performances. To achieve this goal, two intact classes were selected from Shambu Secondary School. The treatment group underwent a twelve-week teaching program implementing TBSI, while the comparison group received conventional instruction as per usual practice. Data for this mixed-methods study were collected through speaking perception questionnaires, and both quantitative and qualitative analyses were employed. Quantitative analysis, utilizing ANCOVA, revealed that TBSI positively influenced students' English speaking perception, particularly in areas related to their speaking performances during English language learning. Furthermore, thematic analysis of interview data uncovered several themes highlighting the benefits of TBSI on students' perceptions of their speaking skills performance. In conclusion, the findings of this study have implications for various stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers. By recognizing the positive impact of TBSI on students' speaking perceptions, educators can consider integrating this approach into their teaching practices to enhance students' language learning experiences. Policymakers and curriculum developers are encouraged to support the implementation of TBSI in language education programs, thereby fostering the development of effective speaking skills among students.

Abstract

This research is about the analysis of the American teenagers’ slang translation strategies in Easy A movie subtitles based on Gottlieb’s theory. Translation is seen as important aspect in helping the target communicant understand the content and messages of the utterance. Besides, slangs, though hardly ever discussed in classroom setting, are commonly used in social context, and in movies. Easy A is a movie talking about school life which is close to students’ daily activities. This research aims to know the English slangs appeared in Easy A movie, the strategies the translator uses in translating his or her subtitles of the slang expressions from the English language as the source language (SL) to the Indonesian language as the target language (TL), and the most strategies used.. In this study, the researcher uses a qualitative method to analyse the data. The slang expressions are analysed by selecting and marking the utterances and text containing slang expressions. To support the research, the researcher uses some online dictionaries to determine if the slang is originally from America and to find each slang meaning. The result of this research shows, there are seven strategies used by the translator or subtitle in translating slang expressions: Expansion, Paraphrase, Transfer, Imitation, Condensation, Decimation, and Deletion. Three strategies are not found. They are Transcription, Dislocation, and Resignation strategy. Based on this result, the most often used by the translator is Transfer strategy. It is because the translator translated every slang expression completely. Paraphrase strategy is in second place. It indicates that the translator attempts to make the slang expressions easier to be understood by the audience.

Abstract

Student learning success is primarily determined by their skills in writing scientific texts as their final assignment. However, students experience problems when preparing research proposals. The obstacles experienced were triggered by students' views that scientific writing is challenging and students' lack of understanding of input from lecturers. So, this research has four objectives, namely describing (a) language mindset, (b) corrective feedback preferences, (c) students' follow-up strategies in writing scientific texts, and (c) the correlation of the three. This research employed a mixed method. The research subjects were Indonesian Language Education students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Data was collected using questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The results show that the highest average language mindset is a growth language mindset (4.573). As many as 95.3% of students had an average questionnaire of 3.5-5.00, so most students had a growth language mindset tendency. The dominant corrective feedback that students prefer is an explicit correction (4,895). The average of the follow-up strategy is 4.30, demonstrating that students try to receive corrective feedback on their written scientific texts from lecturers. Based on the correlation results, there is a significant relationship between language mindset and corrective feedback preference (0.529); there is a relationship between language mindset and follow-up strategy-based corrective feedback (0.297); but there is no significant relationship between corrective feedback preference and follow-up strategy based corrective feedback (0.160). The conclusion is that scientific text writing guidance activities need to encourage an increase in students' growth language mindset, corrective feedback preferences, and follow-up strategies in writing scientific text.

Abstract

Digital peer feedback is one of the valuable instructional activities that can enhance students' critical thinking abilities. Yet, knowing it is an urge, the discussion about this has not been much quantitatively checked by some scholars.Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between the qualification of perceived of providing digital peer feedback and students' critical thinking. In amplifying the purpose, this current research utilized a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The result shows an overall rating of 3.55 out of 4, indicates that students show a high perception of providing digital peer feedback. The critical thinking score of the students was indicates in the second result (3.82 out of 5), which shows that it is high level of critical thinking. The last finding examines the relationship between students' critical thinking and their perception of the advantages of providing digital peer feedback. The correlation test's significant (2-tailed) value is found to be 0.000 < 0.05 in the result, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. The relationship was classified as weak level since the Pearson correlation result (r-value) was 0.358. It concludes that students applied critical thinking skills when providing digital peer feedback, and they also believed that providing digital peer feedback had various benefits for them. The result, it can be used to gain a greater understanding on how students  view digital peer feedback, their critical thinking, and the relationship between qualification of perceived of providing digital peer feedback and students' critical thinking.

Abstract

The lack of innovation and variety of media used in the Indonesian language learning process causes a lack of listenin skills for students short stories. This research is shown to create a learning media product in the form of a short story book based on augmented reality which can be effectively used to improve students listening skills. The type of research used is research and development with reference to the ADDIE model with the stages of analyze, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Subjects for small scale trials of this study used 6 students and on a large scale trial using 31 students. The product validation test was carried out by 1 media expert and 1 material expert. Data collection methods used observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The product effectiveness test used t-test and N-Gain test. The results explain that augmented reality-based storybook learning media is said to be feasible with 91% value achievement from media experts and 89% support from material experts. These results also provide an effectiveness value through the t-test analysis test value Ha is accepted and the N-Gain obtained is ³ 0.70. Thus it can be explained simply that the learning media is feasible and effective to use in learning Indonesian, especially in short story listening skills. The development of this media can be used by teachers to support interesting and fun learning so that it can improve listening skills.

Abstract

Self-efficacy in writing is an important factor for a student-writer to accomplish a writing task. However, not all studies show that writing self-efficacy and writing achievement are positively related. The purpose of the study is to find out 1) the writing self-efficacy level of the second-year students of an English education study program in one of the private universities in Pasuruan Regency, East Java, Indonesia, and 2) the correlation between students’ writing self-efficacy and their writing performance. The research uses a correlational design.  The sample of the research was fifty students of English study program from one of private universities in Pasuruan regency, Easyt Java, Indonesia.  The instrument used to collect the data was the writing self-efficacy questionnaire developed by Prickel in 1994, test, Primary Trait Scoring (PTSG) rubric, and documentation of the student's essay. The questionnaire consists of 25 items about self-efficacy in writing with a five-point scale of answers. The result shows that the students’ self-efficacy level mainly falls in the moderate category (58%), while the rest fall in the high category (42%). The result of the correlation analysis shows that there is no correlation between the students’ writing self-efficacy and their writing achievement (r= -.020, n = 50, p = .892).  The result implies that writing teachers should continuously foster their students' writing self-efficacy by giving them sufficient practice opportunities, offering constructive feedback, as well as providing emotional and psychological support in time of difficulties.

Abstract

Transformation occurs when one type of art is replaced by another. Literary works can not only be translated, or transmitted from one language of work to another, but can also be translated into other forms of art. This research aims to describe the transformation of the short story Blokeng by Ahmad Tohari into a drama performance. The theory used is Rifaterre and Pradotokusumo's transformation theory. This research method is descriptive qualitative. The research results show that there are two transformation processes that occur. First, five data were found in the form of expansion or additions to the plot and characters of the short story Blokeng by Ahmad Tohari in drama performances. Second, two modified data were found from the short story Blokeng by Ahmad Tohari for drama performances. Third, there are seven things from the research results regarding the transformation of short stories into drama performances that can be applied to the Drama Appreciation course. The creation of an adapted drama performance as a form of change in a literary work may result in several differences from the work that is the reference. Thus, in the process of adapting a literary work into a drama performance, one should still pay attention to the meaning of the story, so that the audience still gets a thorough understanding of the essence of the literary work when the transformation process occurs from what was originally a textual media then converted into an audio-visual media. or vice versa. Theoretically, this research contributes to providing knowledge to readers about the transformation of the short story Blokeng by Ahmad tohari into the drama performance. Furthermore, it is hoped that teaching materials will be produced that is useful for the Drama Appreciation course.

Abstract

Vocabulary skill is crucial for every English as foreign language (EFL) learners as it forms the foundation for effective communication, comprehension, and overall language proficiency. However, Indonesian migrant workers’ children who attend school at PPWNI Klang that has only two teachers who are not experts in the field of English, resulting in a lack of enthusiasm among students to learn the language. The study aimed to examine whether the use of Scrabble games was effective in increasing students' vocabulary achievement or not. The research design was a pre-experimental research design, with one group pretest-posttest used by the researchers. The sample of the study was 21 students of grade 9 SMP PPWNI Klang Malaysia, selected using purposive sampling. The results of the pretest and posttest data were analyzed using the paired sample t-test through the SPSS software. The findings of the study showed that Sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05. This means that there is a significant difference and effectiveness in learning outcomes after using the scrabble games method in learning English vocabulary. As the conclusion, a scrabble game is an effective strategy for teaching vocabulary especially to students facing various challenges, such as limited teacher resources and an unsupportive learning environment, they can be comfortable and motivated to continue learning due to the enjoyable game-based learning experience.

Abstract

The CBL offer dynamic and engaging learning experiences that cater to diverse learning styles and preferences. By working collaboratively in groups, students not only enhance their language skills but also develop essential communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Therefore, this study is aimed at investigating the efficacy of case-based learning model integrated with critical thinking skills to improve EFL learners’ reading comprehension. This study is designed in a classroom action research. 27 EFL learners are involved in this study. The research participants are selected in purposive random sampling. To collect the research data, the observation sheets, reading tests, and critical thinking tests are applied as the research instruments. The data consisted of qualitative and quantitative one. Qualitative data are analyzed qualitatively while the quantitative data are counted in statistical analysis. Based on the results, the findings show that the case-based learning model integrated with critical thinking skills is effective to improve EFL learners’ reading comprehension. The improvement lies on learners’ vocabulary mastery, grammar knowledge, comprehension, reading strategies, and fluency. For further studies, researchers can include metacognitive strategies and measure learners’ linguistic awareness in learning language skills.
