Abstract

Indonesia has imposed penalties for criminal acts of corruption by sentencing defendants to additional crimes, in addition to the main crime through court decisions. As a text, a court decision is also a practice that uses language like any other text. Therefore, it cannot be denied to analyze the text using the field of forensic linguistic studies. This research aims to explore the argumentative structure of court decisions regarding criminal acts of corruption and additional crimes as argumentative texts. In his analysis, all legal considerations become the basis for decision making. The data in this research is the text of the Jambi District Court decision no. 18/Pid.Sus-TPK/2023/PN Jmb using a qualitative descriptive method referring to a forensic linguistic approach. The results of this research include several things, namely the panel of judges used an indictment that had a high level of empathy and focalization because the indictment was obtained from interviews with the defendants. Thus, it can be concluded that because the claims of 'legitimate and convincing' and 'committing criminal acts of corruption together' are met argumentatively. However, the claim of 'subjected to criminal acts of corruption and additional crimes' needs to be questioned. This is because the six defendants had different sentences. In fact, in the indictment the detailed amount of money received is stated, so this claim is problematic from an argumentative theory perspective.

Abstract

English-subtitled videos are a popular and accessible form of multimedia that can enhance language learning by providing authentic input and scaffolding comprehension. Therefore, This study aims to assess the effectiveness of English-subtitled videos as a learning tool for enhancing speaking, listening, and vocabulary skills among language learners. A total of 87 eligible studies were included in the analysis. The results of our analysis, conducted using JASP software simulation, indicate a statistically significant impact of English-subtitled videos on language learning, accounting for 59% of the variance, placing it in the Moderate category of significance. Specifically, the effect size values for speaking, listening, and vocabulary were 0.64, 0.59, and 0.55, respectively, highlighting their positive influence. Furthermore, the present research revealed that studies published in 2022 exhibited the highest effect size, with an estimated value of 0.771, underscoring the growing relevance of this instructional approach in recent years. Additionally, when considering the number of participants, studies with fewer than 40 participants demonstrated the highest effect, with an estimated value of 0.534. This suggests that English-subtitled videos are particularly well-suited for improving speaking skills, especially in smaller sample sizes. These findings offer valuable insights for educators and learners seeking effective multimedia tools to develop language proficiency.

Abstract

Blended learning yields some challenges and difficulties for learners, and they should have an appropriate strategy to deal with the use of e-resources. This research aimed at: (1) explaining the various learning strategies used by students to learn English using e-resources in blended learning, and (2) determining the factors that influence their choice of these strategies. The researcher used descriptive-quantitative methods in this study, with the participants involving 2 universities. The SILL questionnaire and interviews were used to collect the data. The results showed that the participants mostly used the metacognitive method, with an average of 3.86. The study also revealed that students used five other methods, including cognitive (M = 3.35), compensation (M = 3.34), affective (M = 3.20), social (M = 3.16), and memory (M = 3.14). Moreover, students’ use of these strategies was influenced by some factors, including motivation to learn English, learning style, and ease of learning. In conclusion, the various strategies employed for learning English were different, as were the factors influencing strategy selection by each participant. This research provides meaningful insights into how the blended learning can be boosted through the implementation of appropriate learning strategies, particularly related to the use of e-resources, so that it will increase students' comprehension and achievement during the learning process.

Abstract

The integration of the SRL strategy into instructional practices is motivated by the desire to nurture students' autonomy in learning, a trait that is increasingly emphasized in contemporary educational discourse. This study investigates the integration of the Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategy into the instructional framework of an Interpretive Reading course. Given the emphasis on fostering students' learning independence inherent in the SRL strategy, it becomes crucial to ensure that instructional practices align with this objective, particularly within the context of a course designed for first-semester university students. The study adopts a case study approach within an Interpretive Reading class at a private university in Indonesia. Here, the focus is on evaluating the instructional strategies vis-à-vis the criteria delineated in each phase of the SRL strategy: Forethought and Planning, Monitoring of Performance, and Reflection on Performance. The findings reveal that the instructional interventions implemented by the lecturer predominantly meet the criteria established for each phase of the SRL strategy. These instructions serve as scaffolding mechanisms, guiding students towards developing their autonomy in learning processes. Furthermore, the study underscores the effectiveness of these instructions in enhancing students' interpretive reading skills. Consequently, the outcomes of this study hold implications for the integration of digital texts within the instructional context, suggesting their potential to further support and enhance student learning experiences in Interpretive Reading classrooms.

Abstract

Acquiring a foreign language necessitates navigating practical situations that transcend linguistic and cultural barriers. Therefore, it is the teachers’ responsibility to develop these abilities. However, teachers rarely do so in a foreign language (FL) teaching. Integrating culture into the process of language teaching becomes crucial. Utilizing the textbook is one method to incorporate culture into the FL classroom, as it contains cultural material and linguistics.  Limited research has been devoted to pedagogical analysis compared to the extensive concentration on content analysis in ELT textbook studies. The study aims to examine the teachers’ approaches to cultural depictions in an international English for Foreign Language (EFL) textbook, intending to educate students on a global worldview. The present study employed a qualitative research method with a case study design. The study recruited two junior high school English teachers who taught seventh-grade students at a private school in East Java, Indonesia. These teachers had incorporated cultural elements into their teaching. The instruments used to accomplish the research purpose were observation and post-observation interviews. The study's findings have verified that teachers utilized a comparative approach in presenting foreign cultural elements from the supplementary book to enhance English language learning. Exploring the students’ culture and contrasting it with foreign cultures has the potential to inspire greater participation from students in classroom activities. Using this strategy enables students to develop their English language proficiency in both linguistic and cultural aspects.

Abstract

Linguistic issues such as interference and integration frequently arise in multilingual environment, which frequently result in barriers to second language production. This study examines at how language interaction between Acehnese and Indonesian has affected the Indonesian language in Langsa, with a particular emphasis on consonant variations and interference. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of phonological interference on Acehnese speakers when speaking the Indonesian language, with a specific focus on observing variations in consonant sounds using auditory means.  The study conducted a detailed examination of common variances in Indonesian pronunciation among Acehnese speakers.  This qualitative research was carried out in Langsa, Aceh Province, involving  40 individuals who are native speakers of Acehnese. The participants consisted of 20 males and 20 females, encompassing a range of ages.  The collected data was evaluated using the PRAAT software.  The findings revealed that there was interference in pronunciation, particularly in the form of devoicing, which is the absence of vowel resonance. This was observed in the words "[ap. di]" and "[ʤa.wap]."  This interference leads to a significant level of devoicing, reaching 90% and 100% respectively.  Furthermore, the study revealed phonological interference in words such as "[thə.linga]", "[tə.thap]", and "[a.hat]", with speakers demonstrating devoicing rates of 40%, 40%, and 100% respectively.  The findings showed the complex nature of phonological interference in the pronunciation of the Indonesian language by Acehnese speakers.  These findings served as a foundation for the development of more effective strategies for acquiring a second language, particularly in diglossic environments like Indonesia.

Abstract

Folklore as a source of cultural information for a community group needs to be studied, which then needs to be introduced and socialized to other community groups. Legends have the potential and role as cultural treasures. Legends also have educational value that can be appreciated, pondered and appreciated. This research aims to describe the categories and structure of legends in Nagari Sungai Limau, Dharmasraya Regency and the implications for learning. This type of research is qualitative using descriptive methods. The source of research data is a legend in Nagari Sungai Limau, Dharmasraya Regency. Research data collection techniques use observation, data, interviews and data techniques. Data analysis techniques are carried out by classifying or grouping data, analyzing categories and legend structures, drawing conclusions from the entire research work process, and compiling and reporting research results. The results of the research are: first, there are two categories of legends, namely local legends consisting of the Lubuk Tagadih legend and Lubuk Tosau legend and supernatural world legends consisting of Wang Binun (Binun People) and the Plisit legend. Second, the structure of legends in Nagari Sungai Limau, Dharmasraya Regency generally contains theme, plot, characters, setting and message. Third, the implication in learning is in the Basic Competency that it examines the structure and language of local fables/legends that are read and listened to. Therefore, the current study can be concluded that a category includes local legends and supernatural legends, the structure of the legend which includes theme, plot, characters, setting, and message.

Abstract

An assessment is a way of gathering and discussing data from various sources to gain an understanding of what a student knows, understands, and is able to do with their knowledge resulting from their education to improve their future learning. The purposes of this study were to see the motivation of students to learn the English project suggested in the ESP Course,  Business Meetings Project, and also measured the student's success in language skills, especially oral communication skills.The study was conducted  using an action research method where a questionnaire, students' achievements, and classroom activities were taken as the data. The questionnaire was scored using the Likert scale rating. Students will respond to this scale by rating the motivation factor on a scale. The researchers employed a pre- and post-test to determine how much the students' abilities had improved. The pre-test and post-test mean scores were compared and computed by the researcher using the T-test technique. The participants were 26 students from the Accounting Department of the State Polytechnic Of Malang. The outcome of this study was the successful implementation of the model. The T-test for the first project showed 62,30, the second project had 74,69, and the third project had 79,30.

Abstract

Nowadays promoting autonomous learning has become an important aspect of education. This study aimed to investigate the roles of the teachers in promoting autonomous English language learning at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University. Its emphasis was on the roles of facilitator, guide/mentor, and inspirator/supporter and to what extent supporting environment helping to promote autonomous language learning are available and are used effectively. A survey questionnaire was distributed to 313 freshmen engineering students at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University where 24 students participated in FGD. Furthermore, an interview was conducted with four teachers to obtain supplementary data and for triangulation. The quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS and the qualitative data obtained from FGD and interview was analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that teachers were involved in very limited practices that promote autonomous language learning and used available supporting facilities ineffectively. As facilitators, teachers did not offer necessary assistance on learning plans and objectives and in evaluating their own learning and progress. As a guide/mentor, teachers’ assistance in providing alternative learning strategies and references was bound to the module and course outline.  As an inspirator/supporter of autonomous learning teachers were weak on being positive and supportive when giving feedback, encouraging students to keep a written record of their learning, and acknowledging different ways students follow to attain their goal and their own learning styles. Hence offering teachers professional development programs on how to promote autonomous language learning will help develop learner autonomy.

Abstract

Researchers have extensively studied the linguistic characteristics of research article (RA) titles. However, no research has investigated RA titles viewed from research design types published in national and international English Language Teaching (ELT) journals. Thus, the present study aims to fill this gap by investigating the average word length, syntactic structure, and syntactic structure type based on research design. This study used a comparative mixed method design to analyze 120 RA titles published in 2022-2023. The average length of titles was analyzed by counting the parts of speech of the tiles, the syntactic structures of titles were analyzed using the Framework of Cheng et al. (2012), and syntactic structure types based on research design were analyzed by reading the method section of the articles. Results indicate that the average length of the RA titles was 12 words in national journals and 13 words in international journals. Nominal structure was the most used RA title type in national journals, while compound structure was the most used in international journals. Furthermore, the nominal structure was often used for experimental design in international journals, while it was often used for descriptive study design in national journals. The compound and Verb-ing phrase structures were often used for case study design in both international and national journals. In conclusion, there are important differences and similarities in RA title characteristics between the two groups of ELT journal rankings. The findings contribute to the scholarship on the contrastive aspect of titling practices in English for Publishing Purposes.
