Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum was introduced to address the need for a more flexible and responsive education system, which is crucial in a diverse country like Indonesia. Educational challenges vary significantly between urban and rural areas and public and private schools. This study investigates the factors that hinder the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum and examines how English teachers apply it in senior high schools located in inland and hinterland areas of the Riau Islands region.. The methodology used a mixed-method approach. The research involved 30 English teachers—23 from island schools and 7 from hinterland schools. Data were gathered through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, with 5 teachers providing in-depth insights during interviews. The results reveal significant gaps in implementation, particularly among hinterland teachers, where 42.9% reported limited adaptability. The finding shows that each teacher faces unique challenges, which include: 1) administrative costs, 2) adjustments to new curricular components, and 3) a lack of government support, all of which hinder successful integration of the curriculum. To successfully implement the Merdeka curriculum, the following are essential: 1) involvement and support from all parties, 2) comprehensive teacher training, and 3) teachers' readiness. This study emphasizes that the successful implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum depends on the active participation of every school, ensuring that there is readiness, support, and adaptation to the new educational framework.

Abstract

Betawi folklore holds great potential as both a didactic and creative medium. Integrating Betawi folklore into literacy reading materials for elementary school students can yield positive educational benefits. However, due to the diversity of Betawi folklore, teachers must carefully select appropriate stories and implement effective learning strategies to ensure educational objectives are met. This study examines the appropriateness of Betawi folklore as literacy reading material for elementary school students. Employing a qualitative research approach, it utilizes content analysis techniques to assess intrinsic literary elements—such as themes, plots, characters, and settings—based on children's literature principles and cognitive development theories, particularly Piaget's concrete operational stage. The primary data sources include Cerita Rakyat Betawi 1 and Cerita Rakyat Betawi  by Rahmat Ali. To validate the content analysis findings, teachers were asked to evaluate the suitability of Betawi folklore through a questionnaire. The results indicate that teachers must exercise careful selection, as not all Betawi folklore align with children's literature criteria and cognitive development stages. This study recommends strategies for adapting Betawi folklore to enhance its suitability for literacy activities in elementary schools.

Abstract

English language learning in primary schools still needs more attention, especially regarding teacher training in designing effective lesson plans. Many teachers do not have an English language education background and have never received training in designing English language learning activities, so they have difficulty developing materials that meet students' needs. This study aims to determine how primary school teachers develop and implement English language learning activities in the classroom. This study used a qualitative approach with data collection through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The research subjects were two primary school teachers with a classroom teacher education background and teaching experience of 6 and 11 years respectively. The results showed that the teachers developed learning by watching learning videos and consulting with more experienced colleagues as a form of initiative and creativity in dealing with limited competencies and resources. They also face challenges in adapting methods to different student learning styles and managing limited learning time. Observations show that although the implementation of lesson plans is going according to plan, there are still problems with student participation, understanding of the material, and the effectiveness of activities, so adjustments to teaching strategies are needed. This study highlights the importance of sustained and equitable professional development so that all teachers, including those without an English education background, are able to teach adaptively and effectively in diverse classrooms.

Therefore, it is necessary to explain the types of speech strategies in speech acts of criticizing urban society in Indonesian metropop novels. This study is about speech strategies in the form of speech acts criticizing urban society in metropop novels using a mixed method research type. The research instrument is the researcher himself who is equipped with an inventory format, identification, and data classification. The results of this study are that the most common speech strategy found is the strategy of speaking without further ado. Meanwhile, the least is in the strategy of speaking frankly with positive politeness. The implications of this study can be applied in the learning process, namely in the related basic competencies, namely commenting on original or translated youth novel excerpts (KD 14.1) in junior high school class VIII semester two.

Abstract

The integration of global issues, such as climate change, into English reading materials is crucial in the Independent Curriculum. However, there is a gap in current teaching resources regarding the inclusion of climate change topics in an accessible and engaging format. This study, conducted at SMA Srijaya Negara in Palembang, Indonesia, aims to analyze students' needs for climate change-based descriptive texts integrated into podcast scripts as supplementary teaching materials. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study involved questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 35 tenth-grade students, their English teacher, and a stakeholder. The findings reveal that students need materials that align with their English proficiency levels and are relevant to global issues, especially climate change. Students expressed a preference for descriptive texts that are not only informative but also simple to understand, allowing them to connect the theme of climate change with their real-life contexts through engaging and relatable materials. This study identifies a significant gap in the existing teaching materials, as they do not fully accommodate students' needs for climate change content presented in accessible descriptive text formats. Based on these findings, the study advocates for the development of climate change-based podcast scripts derived from descriptive texts, designed to match students' English proficiency and be more relevant to their daily lives. This research is expected to contribute to the development of supplementary teaching materials that enhance students' English skills while raising their awareness of climate change issues.

Abstract

This research aims to design and develop an audio-based Android application, Listen to Me app, specifically designed to support the learning needs of visually impaired children. The application seeks to enhance accessibility to educational content by providing audio-based materials, enabling users to engage with learning resources independently. The study adopts a Research and Development (RnD) approach, utilizing the Waterfall Method development model. This structured approach consists of four main stages: conducting a user needs analysis, designing the application, developing a prototype based on inclusive design principles, and testing the usability of the application with visually impaired children. Each stage is meticulously aligned with the goal of creating a user-friendly and effective learning tool. The findings reveal that the app significantly improves learning accessibility through its interactive features, such as voice-guided navigation and customizable audio content tailored to user preferences. These results highlight the potential of Listen to Me app to empower visually impaired children by fostering their independence in accessing and engaging with educational content. The primary contribution of this research is the development of an innovative and inclusive audio-based learning platform. It provides a technological solution that addresses the unique learning challenges faced by visually impaired children, offering them greater autonomy and opportunities in education.
