Abstract

Typhoid fever is an acute infectious disease of the small intestine caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi. The prevalence of typhoid fever in the world is 27 million cases per year and causes 200,000 deaths. In Indonesia, it is estimated that the incidence of typhus is 148.7 per 100,000 people per year. Treatment of typhoid fever using ciprofloxacin antibiotics still causes bacterial resistance so that the discovery of herbal ingredients as an alternative to typhoid fever drugs is still being developed. This study aims to look at the potential of the active compound Zingiber aromaticum in terms of physicochemical prediction, pharmacokinetics, binding affinity, and level of toxicity. Previous studies have proven that Zingiber aromaticum has the potential to inhibit Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi bacteria. The method used is molecular docking between the active compounds Zingiber aromaticum to be compared with the control drug ciprofloxacin as a comparison. As a result, all active compounds of Zingiber aromaticum have potential as drug candidates because they fulfill the lipinski’s rule of five. Zerumbon has the best pharmacokinetic profile compared to ciprofloxacin. Compounds in class 4, 5 and 6 are relatively safer, not mutagenic and not toxic to the liver compared to ciprofloxacin. The compounds that have a better binding affinity value than ciprofloxacin are isokaempferide, (-)-beta-Sitosterol, afzelin, kaempferol 3-(3'-acetylrhamnoside), and 3-O-beta-D-Glucopyranosyl sequentially namely -8,1 kcal/mol, -9.0 kcal/mol, -9.4 kcal/mol, -9.3 kcal/mol and -9.3 kcal/mol. The most valid compounds compared to ciprofloxacin are (-)-beta-sitosterol with RMSD l.b 1.513 and RMSD u.b 2.169.

Abstract

Using biostimulants in plant cultivation can increase plant growth and make plants more stress-resistant. Plant extracts are one source of natural biostimulants such as Moringa (Moringa oleifera L.), which contain secondary metabolites and plant growth hormones. In the process of plant extraction, the type of solvent used affects the quality of the resulting extract. This study aimed to determine the effect of biostimulants of Moringa leaf extract extracted with several types of solvents on the growth of red spinach (Amaranthus tricolor L.)  This research was conducted from March to April 2022 in the Greenhouse and Plant Physiology Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Andalas, Padang. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and eight replicates. As treatment is a solvent for extracting moringa leaves consisting of without extract (A), Distilled water (B), Methanol (C), and Ethanol (D). The results showed that the solvent used to extract moringa leaves gave a significantly different effect on the number of leaves but had no significant effect on plant height, leaf area, root length, wet weight, dry weight, chlorophyll content, and anthocyanin content of red spinach plants. Extraction of moringa leaves with methanol and ethanol increases the number of red spinach leaves, which is  14.1 strands.

Abstract

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and antioxidants in the body. One plant that contains antioxidants is binahong leaves (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis). To determine the compound content contained in binahong leaves, a total antioxidant capacity test and toxicity test were carried out on binahong leaves. This research used an in-vitro experimental study consisting of an antioxidant capacity test with DPPH (1.1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil) and a bioassay, namely a toxicity test with the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) from binahong leaf extract. Extraction of binahong leaves is carried out using the maceration method using methanol solvent and then evaporated to obtain the extract. The total antioxidant capacity test was carried out using the Blois method, the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) toxicity test using the Meyer method. In the antioxidant capacity test, the IC50 value was 284.199 μg/mL, which means that the antioxidant capacity of binahong leaf extract is relatively low. In the toxicity test, the LC50 was obtained at 302.25 μg/mL, which means that binahong leaf extract has a level of toxicity against (Artemia salina L.) shrimp larvae. So it can be concluded that binahong leaf extract has relatively low antioxidant capacity and has toxic properties which are thought to have antimitotic properties.
