Abstract

This research discusses the importance of Ulos Batak Toba in globalization and the important role of Gen Z in understanding, maintaining, and promoting it. Ulos, a typical Toba Batak woven fabric, has a very important cultural value, but modernization has reduced its importance. Generation Z is more likely to perceive Ulos as old-fashioned and visually unappealing, posing a threat to its preservation. This research studies the different types of Ulos in Toba Batak and their important role in daily life and cultural beliefs. Ulos represent celebratory symbolism, high values, and cultural identity for the Batak people. As agents of change in the digital era, Gen Z bears the responsibility to preserve Ulos, although their modernistic views and disregard for tradition jeopardize its preservation. This research aims to trace the development of Ulos in social, historical, and symbolic frameworks, and explore how Gen Z's perspective impacts the sustainability of Ulos in the midst of globalization. Conducted through a literature review approach, this research emphasizes the need for comprehensive education and socialization on the cultural values embedded in Ulos, and highlights the potential of Gen Z to actively preserve this heritage.

Abstract

This research describes the adaptive behavior of married female students while studying from an anthropological perspective. The main focus of this research is how female students manage their dual roles as wives and students, with special emphasis on adaptive behavior. A qualitative approach was used, involving participant observation and in-depth interviews with female students who faced this situation. The results show that college students who marry while studying develop unique adaptive behavioral strategies to overcome daily challenges. This dual role not only impacts academic aspects, but also the social and emotional dimensions of female students. Cultural factors, social support, and community expectations play a major role in shaping the adaptive behavior of female students. This research makes an important contribution to understanding how female students can successfully manage their dual roles, especially in specific cultural contexts. In conclusion, this research describes in detail the complex dynamics of adaptive behavior of married female students in anthropological studies.Top of Form

Abstract

The alawiyyin group or groups that claim to be descendants of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. have differences of opinion regarding the exclusivity of their status. Their status in the surrounding community has become a special privilege for their group. An organization that wants legitimacy for the alawiyyin group is trying to trace the descendants of the alawiyyin group to remote villages, starting in the 19th century. It makes the rabithah alawiyah organization or the unity of the alawiyyin group experience difficulties in legitimizing the alawiyyin groups in the area. This research analyzes the causes of exclusivity and legitimacy in the status legitimation process, especially between rabithah alawiyah and alawiyyin groups in rural areas. Ethnography is an appropriate method for analyzing and analyzing active observation data in this research. Some data and informants in in-depth interviews that had the nuance of friendly conversation because the researcher himself was an alawiyyin who could carry out in-depth analysis in this research. The results of this research found that most of the alawiyyin groups in rural areas did not want their status to be made public, was even an informant's grandfather who hid their written genealogy to avoid the arrogance that would occur to his children and grandchildren when they legitimized their status. As a finding from this research, rabithah alawiyah as an institution that legitimizes the status of alwiyyin groups nationally and internationally, digitalization of nasab needs to be digitalized, so that those in rural areas or alawiyyin groups in remote parts of Indonesia can register their nasab or clan at this institution Rabitha Alawiyah.

The location of this research is SangiaTiworo Village, South Tiworo District, West Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province. The data collection used was interview and observation methods. Data analysis techniques refer to data analysis models consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions/verification. The results of this research are that as single parent female farmers, the bonds of solidarity built by fellow farmers become their social glue capital to be enthusiastic in managing their agricultural land, especially patchouli plants (PogostemonCablin Benth), this is also supported by the spirit of mutual cooperation among patchouli farmers (PogostemonCablin Benth) starting from working together in land clearing, seeding, plant care, harvesting to post-harvest. This is what supports them to continue trying to develop their agricultural land even as single parent women. Apart from building social solidarity, which is accompanied by a spirit of mutual cooperation, fellow farmers also need a work ethic. Because this work ethic is the determinant of success, such as applying the principles of hard work, respecting time, having a proactive attitude in agricultural matters, honesty, openness to each other, a sense of responsibility and commitment that is continuously upheld.

Abstract

This research examines the resilience of students from sengon farming families in Pulang Pisau Regency in facing crop failure due to forest and land fires (karhutla). Descriptive qualitative methods were used through interviews, observations and literature studies. The research results show that forest and land fires, which are often caused by burning land without permission, cause significant economic losses for sengon farmers and their families. Affected students adopted resilience strategies such as income diversification, utilization of scholarships, good financial management, and sustainable agricultural development. Social support from the government and local communities focuses on preventing forest and land fires, but direct economic support is still minimal. This research highlights the importance of strengthening capacity and education for sengon farming families and students to build resilience in facing forest and land fires. The resilience demonstrated by students and families of sengon farmers in Pulang Pisau District-through diversification of income sources, utilization of social networks, and small-scale agricultural innovations-indicates that strengthening social capital and adaptive capacity are key to maintaining welfare sustainability amid the ecological and economic crisis caused by forest and land fires.

Abstract

This study examines the causes of cross-border inequality between border communities in Papua and South Papua provinces Indonesia and Sandaun and Western provinces of Papua New Guinea (PNG) through the lens of development theory and the concept of the developmental state. Using a qualitative-descriptive methodology, this study posits that the inequality existing between Indonesian and Papua New Guinean border communities is caused by the large investment and state capacity committed by the Indonesian government in developing its border communities compared to the Papua New Guinean government’s lack of economic investment and state capacity in developing its peripheral border regions. Furthermore, this study suggests that this existing inequality can be solved by encouraging state capacity building and investment in border communities in partnership with the private sector in the Papua New Guinean side of the border.

Abstract

This article examines the contribution of the Harapan Papua Baru Group, a community based business group in Merauke Regency, South Papua, engaged in fishery product processing since 2018. The primary focus of this study is to explore the group’s role in enhancing community welfare through innovative fish based products such as ALBUGRAN albumin oil, fish floss, fish balls, fish nuggets, and breaded shrimp. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach, involving in-depth interviews with group administrators, members, business partners, and local government representatives. The findings reveal that the group has successfully utilized local knowledge to add value to fishery products, supported by training, mentorship, and strong social solidarity. Their flagship product innovations have become an effective strategy for navigating market dynamics and improving competitiveness. However, significant challenges remain, such as product legality and production capacity limitations. Government and business partner support play a crucial role in the group's success. Moreover, the empowerment of women and the transformation of gender roles within the group contribute to improved family and community welfare. This article recommends strengthening collaboration between the government, community, and private sector to address existing challenges and sustain local resource-based economic empowerment programs. These findings enrich the literature on community empowerment through small-scale enterprises and sustainable fisheries resource management. This article examines the contribution of the Harapan Papua Baru Group, a community based business group in Merauke Regency, South Papua, engaged in fishery product processing since 2018.
