Abstract

Graphology, the study of handwriting, has been used to interpret an individual's character and personality. This study examined the application of graphology in assessing the communication and social interaction abilities of deaf people. Deaf individuals face challenges in building social relationships and communicating with others because of their hearing impairment and reliance on nonverbal communication techniques such as sign language. Previous research has explored the potential of graphology in diagnosing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and mental retardation as well as in revealing the psychological aspects of historical figures. However, few studies have investigated the application of graphology in assessing the counseling needs of deaf individuals. This study employed a qualitative approach to analyze the handwriting samples of deaf participants using graphological techniques. The findings revealed that intensifying and reducing signs in the handwriting of deaf individuals influenced their communication and social interaction abilities. This study highlights the potential of graphology as an alternative assessment tool for understanding the characteristics and conditions of deaf individuals, without relying on oral communication. These results contribute to the field of counseling by providing insights for assessors, such as psychologists and counselors, to develop appropriate interventions and approaches tailored to the unique needs of deaf individuals. Further research is recommended to explore the effectiveness of graphology-based interventions in enhancing communication and social interaction skills of deaf individuals.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the parenting patterns of single and full parents and their impact on child behavior in Sementara, Pantai Cermin Sub-district, Serdang Bedagai Regency, Indonesia. Parenting plays a crucial role in shaping a child's personality and future. Based on Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory, the home environment, especially parental parenting, has the greatest influence on child development. This study focuses on three parenting styles: authoritarian, democratic, and permissive. Authoritarian parenting is characterized by strict rules and limited freedom, while democratic parenting prioritizes the child's interests and involves discussions between parents and children. Permissive parenting provides loose supervision and unrestricted freedom for children to behave and act as they wish. Previous studies have shown that single mothers tend to apply authoritarian parenting, resulting in spoiled children with difficulty interacting, while single fathers tend to apply permissive parenting, leading to more independent children who are easier to make friends. Additionally, authoritarian, democratic, and permissive parenting styles have been associated with aggressive behavior in children, obtained through social learning. Democratic parenting has been found to increase children's motivation and achievement at school, while authoritarian parenting inhibits children's socialization skills. This study provides important insights into the impact of parenting patterns on child behavior in the context of single and full parents in Sementara, Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between active smoking and nutritional status among male adolescents aged 14-16 years in Kertagena Tengah Village, Kadur District, Pamekasan, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study design was employed, and a total of 55 adolescents were included using a total sampling technique. Smoking status was assessed using standardized questionnaires, while nutritional status was determined using anthropometric measurements, including body mass index (BMI). The study found that 76% of the adolescents were active smokers, with 69% of them being classified as undernourished. A significant relationship was observed between active smoking and poor nutritional status (p=0.018). The main contributing factors to poor nutritional status included an unbalanced diet, lack of access to nutritious food, and high smoking rates among adolescents. Smoking was found to reduce appetite and interfere with nutrient absorption, exacerbating nutritional deficiencies. The study highlights the urgent need for comprehensive public health interventions, including health education, stricter regulation of cigarette sales to minors, and community support to create a smoke-free environment. Future research should include longitudinal studies to clarify the causal link between smoking and nutritional status, broaden demographic coverage, and incorporate qualitative methods to explore the social and cultural influences on adolescent smoking.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the efficacy of group guidance in enhancing the self-efficacy of 8th grade students at MTs Laboratorium UINSU Medan by comparing the self-efficacy exhibited by students in the experimental and control groups. The research methodology employed was quantitative, and utilized a quasi-experimental design. This investigation was conducted at the MTs Laboratorium UINSU Medan during the semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. The study population comprised all VIII grade students at the MTs Laboratorium UINSU Medan. The sampling technique utilized was purposive sampling, based on specific considerations and recommendations from the counseling teacher. Data were collected using a Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, followed by hypothesis testing (t-test) with the assistance of SPSS version 26. The findings indicated that the experimental group pre-test mean was 58.4, and the control group was 53.2, while the mean post-test scores for the experimental group were 91.5, compared to 78.2, respectively. The increase in student scores from pre-test to post-test in the experimental group was 33.1, whereas in the control group, it was 25. Data analysis yielded a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, respectively. With Sig.0.000 < 0.005, the hypothesis test results reject H0 and accept Ha. This demonstrates the significant effect of the implementation of group guidance on increasing student self-efficacy.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the key factors influencing COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among the elderly at Manatuto Villa Health Center, Kota Manatuto, Timor-Leste, with a focus on knowledge, social influence, personal experiences, emotional factors, and access to health information. A cross-sectional design was used, involving 278 respondents aged 60 years and above who completed the structured questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted using univariate, bivariate, and logistic regression to identify the main determinants of vaccine acceptance. The results revealed that 72% of respondents lacked sufficient knowledge about the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination, which was attributed to low education levels and limited access to information (p < 0.05). Additionally, 12% of the respondents reported negative experiences related to vaccine side effects, such as dizziness and nausea, which increased their hesitancy to receive subsequent doses. Social and family influences were also significant, with 71% of respondents following the advice of religious and community leaders in making vaccination decisions. Emotional factors, such as anxiety and fear of declining health due to old age, affected 67% of the respondents, becoming a barrier to vaccine acceptance. This study concludes that improving knowledge through community-based outreach programs, addressing anxiety, and involving trusted local leaders are essential strategies for enhancing vaccine acceptance among the elderly. The practical implications of these findings highlight the need for policies that focus on community education and outreach approaches to increase vaccination coverage in areas with limited access to healthcare.

Abstract

The question addressed in this article is a possible new epistemological framework to find solutions to the current crisis. The analysis began with the idea of creation as a holistic concept. The problem discussed here is related to the relationship between transcendence and immanence. The discussion is based on the approach of Oneness or Unity of Being (wahdat al-wujūd) developed by Ibn ΄Arabī. This Sufi approach is supplemented by an outlook on modern scientific epistemologies. This article proposes a new epistemology based on the Oneness of Being, an outlook into the immanent thinking of the Deleuzian style, and modern scientific approaches, especially from advanced biology. Thus, this article attempts to overcome the problems arising from pre-modern thinking.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of the community in managing household waste in the Urban Village of Lahane Oriental, Dili. This study was motivated by the growing global and local challenges of waste management, particularly in urban areas where population growth exacerbates this issue. This research employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, using questionnaires distributed to 96 respondents selected through simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation to assess the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. The results showed that the majority of respondents (61.5%) had sufficient knowledge of waste management, while 62.5% demonstrated a positive attitude toward proper waste management. However, the community's waste management behavior did not fully meet the expected standards, despite generally positive attitudes and moderate knowledge. These findings indicate that, although knowledge and attitudes play an important role in influencing behavior, the lack of adequate infrastructure and institutional support remains a major obstacle to optimal waste management practices. It was concluded that further educational campaigns and improvements in waste management facilities are crucial for enhancing community engagement in sustainable waste management. The findings provide practical implications for local governments and policymakers in designing effective waste management interventions that consider both behavioral and structural factors.

Abstract

Ibn Hajar al-Haytami (d. 974 AH/1567 CE) gave his own color and demonstrated the development of ru'yah al-hilāl in Islamic civilization. As an important part of determining the beginning of Ramadan for the obligation to fast, Ibn Hajar al-Haytami was of the view that the results of ru'yah al-hilāl that utilized tools such as glass could not be accepted or used as guidelines for determining the beginning of the lunar month. This view contradicts the work of science that prioritizes and produces observation aids to maintain precision and reduce human error when observing celestial objects. With a historical and hermeneutic approach, this paper seeks to reveal the historical background of Ibn Hajar al-Haytami 's view regarding ru'yah al-hilāl. The findings of this paper are that Ibn Hajar al-Haytami's opinion is in line with and influenced by the decline of scientific civilization in Islam in the 10th century AH. At that time, especially in the Ottoman Turkish region, philosophy as the basis for the development of science was rejected and/or ignored in the scientific treasures of Islamic civilization.
