Abstract

This study examined the extent of extemporaneous speaking skills among Grade 11 HUMSS students and analyzed their relationship with academic performance during the 2023–2024 school year. Utilizing a descriptive-correlational research design, the researchers assessed 165 students using standardized rubrics, with evaluations conducted by three communication experts. Academic performance was determined based on the students’ General Weighted Averages. The results indicated that the students demonstrated extemporaneous speaking skills to a great extent and achieved a very satisfactory level of academic performance. A statistically significant relationship was found between the two variables. These results support the need for targeted interventions to enhance students’ speaking abilities, which may, in turn, contribute positively to their academic achievement.

Abstract

This study delves into the current status of computing education in Central Luzon, providing a foundational framework for the development of training programs within the Association of Computing Education Deans and Program Heads (ACED.PH). It addresses a critical research problem: the gap between existing institutional capacities and the quality standards outlined in CHED CMO 25 Series of 2015, particularly in areas of faculty research engagement, laboratory management, and organizational commitment. It investigates the challenges of membership and commitment in professional organizations and underscores the importance of effective leadership for organizational sustainability. ACED.PH, previously known as the Council of Deans in Information Technology Education (CDITE) Region 3, seeks to enhance the well-being of deans, program directors, teachers, and students within the Information Technology Education (ITE) field. The study employs a mixed-method approach, combining a descriptive research design and a survey questionnaire technique to comprehensively gather quantitative and qualitative data. Participants include administrators from accredited schools in Central Luzon offering ITE programs. The study utilizes a structured questionnaire with 72 items, evaluating ITE programs in terms of administration, faculty, curriculum, and laboratories. The study revealed that the schools offering ITE Programs in Central Luzon are above requirement as stipulated in the CMO 25 Series 2015. Furthermore, research capability and engagement of the faculty under the program need to be prioritized in the series of training sessions that the association will implement as it is below the requirement stipulated in the mentioned CMO. On the other hand, training on the upkeep of the laboratories and capability building among technical personnel in the school will be communicated to the school administration for them to be given ample skills and knowledge as computers are vital in the teaching-learning process of the ITE students. Lastly, more research collaboration among ITE Deans and Program Chairs is recommended to strengthen the research engagement of both the administration and faculty. The findings revealed the development of a short- and long-term action plan to ensure the sustainability of training and programs for computing education. The research aligns with the minimum standards set by the Commission on Higher Education CMO 25 Series of 2015 and Manual of Regulations for Private Higher Education (MORPHE). Understanding the current state of computing education in Central Luzon is vital for shaping the future of IT education and professional development within the region.

Abstract

The importance of micro-enterprises in economic growth cannot be overstated. Often, micro-enterprises are seen as a vital source of employment. However, the existence of poor people, as well as low educational attainment, poor health, low-level income, and an increase in the unemployment rate, remains obvious. The study investigates the effect of registered micro-enterprises on the numbers of unemployed and poor households in the Philippines. The study used panel regression as the primary statistical treatment to examine micro-enterprises effect on the number of poor households and unemployment in the 17 regions of the Philippines. The findings revealed that the number of poor households is significantly affected by the number of registered micro-enterprises under the random effect model. As for micro-enterprises effect on unemployment, the results demonstrate that the number of unemployed is considerably affected by the number of registered micro-enterprises under the fixed effect model. The study recommends promoting micro-enterprises laws, increasing financial support, and improving training programs for micro-enterprises.

Abstract

The Coast Guard Special Operations Course has experienced a 33% dropout rates covering training program from 2018 to 2024, highlighting the need to identify the underlying factors contributing to trainee success or failure. This mixed-methods study utilized a concurrent triangulation design to examine these factors comprehensively. Quantitative data were collected from 243 respondents who successfully completed the CGSOC training from 2018 until August 2024. The analysis, conducted using Exploratory Factor Analysis, revealed five key dimensions influencing training success: (1) Career Advancement and Personal Motivation, (2) Training Environment and Support, (3) Training Facility and Resource Adequacy, (4) Family Support and Guidance, and (5) Family Concerns and Peer Support. Concurrently, qualitative data were gathered through in-depth interviews with five participants who did not complete the training, which provided additional context and in-depth understanding of the challenges trainees face. The study found that trainees’ intrinsic motivation, a supportive training environment, and robust family and peer support are crucial for their success. On the other hand, challenges such as homesickness, financial difficulties, and inadequate preparation were identified as major obstacles that contribute to attrition. These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions to optimize training retention and outcomes. The results suggest that fostering mentorship and peer support systems could mitigate the negative impacts of these challenges, thereby improving completion rates. Future research may explore the role of structured peer mentorship and family engagement strategies in high-stress law enforcement training environments.

Abstract

Science education is vital for developing students' critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and scientific literacy. Effective scientific training relies on both theoretical instruction and hands-on experience using laboratory equipment. Laboratories serve as essential instructional environments where students explore scientific principles, conduct experiments, and apply theoretical knowledge in practical situations. The efficient utilization of laboratory equipment predominantly depends on the expertise of science educators in administering and integrating these resources into their instruction. Hence, a descriptive-correlational research approach was conducted to determine the knowledge and skill competence of public school teachers in the Schools Division of Ilocos Norte. Using a researcher-made survey questionnaire, it was revealed that the respondents have very high competence when it comes to laboratory instruction. With a positive correlation, the results revealed that teachers with high competence in laboratory techniques, equipment handling, and experiment facilitation are more likely to integrate laboratory activities into their teaching, fostering active learning and scientific inquiry among students. The study emphasizes the importance of continuous professional development and skills training to maximize the use of laboratory resources. Thus, Schools should invest in training programs and provide adequate facilities to ensure teachers can effectively implement laboratory-based instruction, enhancing instructional effectiveness and student engagement in science learning.

Abstract

This study explores the challenges and coping strategies of non-education graduate Mathematics teachers in senior high school, an area that has received limited attention. Using a phenomenological research design, the study examined the experiences of ten non-education graduate Mathematics teachers from a senior high school in the Philippines. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings revealed challenges in classroom management, selecting appropriate teaching strategies, subject knowledge, and perceived stigma. Teachers employed strategies such as peer support, professional development, resourcefulness, and a strong passion for teaching to address these challenges. To strengthen the pedagogical capacity of non-education graduate Mathematics teachers, institutions must offer targeted professional development, structured mentorship, and classroom management support, alongside opportunities for advanced studies and formal recognition to foster sustained growth and effectiveness.
