Abstract

Azyumardi Azra’s thought on the dialectic between tradition and modernity provides a strategic framework for understanding Islamic social reform in the Malay cultural context. He emphasizes that Islam can remain socially relevant only by preserving valuable local traditions while engaging critically with modern challenges. This study aims to analyze the implementation of Azra’s ideas in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at SMA Negeri 3 Palembang and to examine their implications for learning practices and school culture. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with teachers and students, and analysis of curriculum and learning documents. The findings indicate that Azra’s thought is implemented through three main strategies. First, Malay Islamic traditions are integrated into learning as a foundation for students’ religious and cultural identity. Second, modern competencies are strengthened through the development of critical thinking, openness to diverse perspectives, and digital literacy in responding to contemporary issues. Third, pedagogical practices are transformed into dialogical learning processes that connect religious texts with students’ social realities. Overall, this study demonstrates that PAI functions not merely as doctrinal instruction, but as an effective medium of Islamic social reform that promotes religious moderation, cultural rootedness, and adaptive engagement with modernity.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the argumentative clarify of EFL student at Muslim Satun Wittaya School through the application of a systematically designed phrase writing formula. The background of this study  stems from the difficulties experienced by students in writing argumentative texts due to differences in the linguistic structures of Malay, Thai, and English, which often cause language interference. The research method used was Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles involving 25 high school sophomore students. Data were collected through writing tests, teacher and student observation sheets, field notes, and documentation. The results show a significant improvement in students’ argumentative writing skills. The average writing score increased from 46.80 in the pre-cycle to 56.04 in Cycle I, and jumped to 85.48 in Cycle II. Teacher activity also increased from a score of 69 to 94, while student activity rose from 73.64 to 86.04. These findings prove that the phrase writing formula can function as effective scaffolding in helping students construct clearer, more coherent, and structured arguments. This study recommends the use of phrase formulas as a pedagogical strategy in argumentative writing instruction in a multilingual EFL context

Abstract

This study examines the concept of collective knowledge in President A.S.’s speeches through the lens of social epistemology, focusing on the period from 2015 to 2020 within the broader temporal frame of 2000–2025. Departing from traditional individualistic accounts of knowledge, the research treats political discourse as a site where knowledge is socially constructed, authorized, and normatively deployed. Presidential speeches are approached not merely as rhetorical instruments but as epistemic practices that shape shared understanding and collective identity. Adopting a qualitative, philosophy-oriented methodology informed by a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and conceptual discourse analysis, the study analyzes official speeches to identify how collective knowledge is linguistically and philosophically framed. The findings reveal that collective knowledge is articulated through multiple forms, including experiential knowledge grounded in shared social experience, historical knowledge rooted in national memory, and institutional or expert-based knowledge that confers epistemic authority. These forms are strategically mobilized to legitimize political decisions, unify the audience, and guide collective action. From a social epistemological perspective, the study highlights significant tensions between epistemic authority and democratic inclusion. While appeals to collective knowledge foster cohesion and legitimacy, they also risk suppressing epistemic plurality and marginalizing dissenting perspectives. By situating presidential discourse within debates on collective intentionality, epistemic authority, and power, this research contributes to philosophical discussions on the ethical and political dimensions of collective knowing. It demonstrates the relevance of social epistemology for understanding how knowledge functions in contemporary political life.

Abstract

The management of educational facilities and infrastructure is a crucial factor in supporting the quality of learning, particularly at the vocational high school level (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan/SMK), which emphasizes skills- and practice-based learning. This study aims to describe and analyze the management of educational facilities and infrastructure in supporting learning quality through a multi-site study at SMK Krian 2 and SMK YPM 1 Taman Sidoarjo. This research employed a qualitative approach with a multi-site study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the management of facilities and infrastructure at SMK YPM 1 Taman has been implemented systematically, in a well-planned manner, and based on inventory data, enabling it to optimally support the quality of learning. Meanwhile, the management of facilities and infrastructure at SMK Krian 2 still faces challenges, particularly in data-based planning, scheduled maintenance, and the documentation of monitoring and evaluation activities. Cross-site findings reveal that careful planning, clear division of responsibilities, and continuous monitoring and evaluation are key factors for successful facilities and infrastructure management in improving the quality of learning at vocational high schools.

Abstract

This paper examines the essence of education from an ontological perspective by analyzing the fundamental relationship between God, human beings, and nature. Using an ontological-philosophical approach and library research, this study draws on classical and contemporary literature in philosophy of education, metaphysics, and epistemology. The analysis shows that education is not merely a process of knowledge transmission, but a humanizing and transcendental endeavor that integrates divine values, human potential, and the natural order. Ontology-based education positions humans as rational and spiritual beings with ethical and ecological responsibility as part of divine purpose. The study concludes that education should be reformulated toward an integrative and holistic paradigm that unites spiritual, intellectual, and ecological dimensions.

Abstract

Education plays an important role in preserving cultural values and customs passed down from generation to generation while continuously adapting to societal changes. In the context of regional development, mastering ASEAN identity is essential for students to understand ASEAN member countries, their characteristics, and shared values. Low levels of curiosity among students can be addressed through the use of interactive and engaging learning media. This study aimed to determine the relationship between recognition of ASEAN identity and students’ curiosity at the Pandan Learning Centre in Malaysia. The study employed a quantitative correlational research design involving students as research participants. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using a correlation test. The results showed a significance value of Sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000, which is less than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant relationship between ASEAN identity recognition and students’ curiosity. Therefore, it can be concluded that a higher level of ASEAN identity recognition is associated with increased curiosity among students.

Abstract

The importance of understanding meaning in context is highly paramount in movies. This linguistics research attempts to identify the utilization and prevalent use of homophones and homographs in the Disney animated film “Ratatouille.” This study highlighted semantics analysis through three characters; Remy, Alfredo Linguini, and Colette Tatou by analyzing their dialogues and narratives according to the spellings, writings, and meanings. With a total discovery of 313 words out of 920 dialogues, it was found that this film more maneuvered towards homophone, with Linguini as the leading conveyor with 75 words in hand. On the other side, Remy followed second as the provider of homographs with a sum of 60 words. These number show how lexical ambiguity can lead to misunderstanding if there are multiple meanings associated with the word. Thus, these results can not only contribute linguistically to comprehending the storytelling experience in the film, but also indicate that despite being the harder one, homophone words were used more commonly than homographs.

Abstract

This study explores how Selena Gomez intentionally switches between English and Spanish in her song "Ojos Tristes" to deepen emotional impact and express her cultural identity. While bilingual music has gained more attention from researchers, there’s still a need to better understand the ways artists use language switching creatively in popular American music today. By closely analyzing the lyrics using established theories on code-switching, the study highlights three types switching between sentences, within sentences, and small inserted phrases that serve specific emotional and cultural purposes. The findings show that English tends to express calm, reasoned feelings, whereas Spanish conveys more personal and heartfelt emotions, reflecting Gomez’s blend of two cultures. Ultimately, the research shows that code-switching here isn’t random but a thoughtful artistic choice that challenges single-language expectations and celebrates the richness of bilingual expression in mainstream music.

Abstract

The widespread use of social media has significantly shaped students’ communication patterns, yet its specific impact on the quality of academic writing remains underexplored, particularly among English language education students in Indonesian tertiary institutions. Addressing this gap, the present study examines how social media language influences the academic writing performance of 10 students in the English Education Department at Al Mawaddah Warrahmah Islamic Science University Kolaka. Data were collected through a questionnaire measuring students’ social media usage and perceptions, alongside an analytical writing task in the form of a short academic essay to identify the presence of informal language features. These features included abbreviations, slang, code-switching, and unconventional punctuation. The findings indicate that frequent social media engagement contributes to the unintentional transfer of informal expressions into academic writing. A total of 31 informal language instances were identified, with Pearson correlation analysis showing a moderate negative relationship (r = –0.42) between social media use and writing accuracy. Despite this, several students reported positive effects such as increased confidence, fluency, and exposure to new vocabulary. In conclusion, social media language exerts a dual influence—diminishing formality and accuracy while enhancing certain aspects of language development. These findings highlight the need for educators to incorporate digital literacy and targeted academic writing instruction to help students manage informal language interference and optimize the benefits of online language exposure.
