Abstract

Writing accuracy is a vital component of academic communication, especially for students in non-English departments who are required to produce written texts in English despite limited linguistic training. This study investigates sentence structure and punctuation errors in the writing of non-English Department students at Sriwijaya University, identifies the causes of these errors, and suggests possible remedies to improve students’ writing competence. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, the study analyzed narrative and descriptive essays written by 20 undergraduate students from four non-English study programs in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. The analysis was conducted using Corder’s (1974) Error Analysis framework, which classifies errors into omission, misformation, misordering, and addition. To enrich the findings, semi-structured interviews were also carried out with selected students to explore their writing experiences, perceived difficulties, and strategies for dealing with writing problems. The findings show that sentence structure errors occurred more frequently than punctuation errors. Misformation errors were the most dominant type of sentence structure errors, particularly involving incorrect verb forms, tense misuse, and subject–verb disagreement, followed by omission errors such as missing subjects or auxiliary verbs. Punctuation errors mainly included the omission of periods at the end of sentences, misuse of commas, capitalization errors, and incorrect use of apostrophes. Interview data revealed that limited grammar mastery, first language interference, insufficient writing practice and feedback, and psychological factors such as low confidence and time pressure were the main causes of these errors. Overall, the study concludes that sentence structure and punctuation errors among non-English Department students are influenced by a combination of linguistic, instructional, and psychological factors, highlighting the need for grammar-integrated writing instruction, focused feedback, and continuous writing support to enhance students’ academic writing accuracy and clarity.

Abstract

Social media today has become hand in hand with young people. It not only connects to the world but also provides learning materials including English.  This study aims to explore the use of social media as a tool to learn vocabulary by interviewing five high school students who frequently used social media as a tool for learning English vocabulary and who spent more than eight hours a week in their study.  This research found that there are seven platforms of social media that students use in learning vocabulary, such as Instagram,  TikTok, Facebook, twitter, whatsapp, discord, and YouTube. They believed that these platforms play a crucial role in their vocabulary mastery. Students gained exposure to new vocabularies and opportunities to practice them through multimodal content, varied features, and peer interaction. Another important point that the students reflect on the use of social media as a learning tool is that they have freedom to choose the content and the features which enhances their enthusiasm in learning vocabulary.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ perspectives on self-assessment in English Language Teaching (ELT), focusing on its implementation and challenges at Tadulako University. The research employed a qualitative descriptive design supported by quantitative data to gain insights into students’ experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five students and a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire administered to thirty students of the English Education Study Program who had experience using self-assessment in English courses. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key themes related to students’ understanding and challenges of self-assessment. The findings indicate that students perceive self-assessment as a reflective learning process that helps them monitor progress, identify strengths and weaknesses, and take responsibility for learning. Self-assessment enhanced motivation, confidence, learner autonomy, and English language skills. However, challenges such as limited objectivity, unclear assessment criteria, and insufficient lecturer feedback were identified. These findings suggest self-assessment requires guidelines, rubrics, and lecturer support.

Abstract

This research explores the role of logic in the understanding of truth in educational settings, using a hermeneutical-philosophical approach. Logic, as a rational thinking tool, serves to develop students' critical and analytical thinking abilities, while science, through empirical methods, provides an evidence-based framework that supports the understanding of truth. However, the application of logic is often limited to theoretical aspects without a practical context, and science education tends to emphasise memorisation over process exploration. This paper proposes the integration of logic and science through an integrated curriculum, project-based approaches and the use of technology to create a holistic education that supports students' character and critical reasoning. This integration creates harmony between rationality and local values, relevant for 21st century education that respects cultural diversity. This research highlights the challenges of creating an inclusive yet value-based education and offers practical recommendations to improve the relevance of logic in learning.

Abstract

This study employed a quantitative correlational research design to explore the relationship between speaking proficiency and perceived academic stress among sixth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at UIN Raden Fatah University. The data were collected from 48 participants using the ETS Integrated Speaking Rubric to assess speaking proficiency and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS10) to measure perceived academic stress. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed that most students experienced a moderate level of academic stress, while the majority of speaking mastery scores were classified in the “Good” category. Furthermore, Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis indicated that there was no statistically significant relationship between students’ perceived academic stress and their speaking proficiency. These findings suggest that speaking performance may not be directly influenced by general academic stress but is more closely related to factors such as speaking-specific anxiety, self-confidence, and language learning experience. Therefore, this study recommends that educators place greater emphasis on reducing language-specific anxiety rather than general academic stress to improve students’ speaking proficiency.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of pair-work activities in developing students’ speaking confidence at SMAN 5 Palu. Using a descriptive qualitative research design, four Grade 11 students were purposively selected based on varying levels of speaking confidence. Data were collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that pair-work activities create a supportive, low-anxiety environment that encourages students to speak more freely. Students reported feeling more comfortable, less nervous, and more motivated when interacting with a peer instead of speaking individually or in front of the whole class. Despite challenges such as limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and fear of making mistakes, pair-work activities helped reduce anxiety and increased communication effort. The study concludes that pair-work is an effective strategy for improving speaking confidence and suggests that teachers integrate more structured and supportive pair-speaking tasks in classroom practice.

Abstract

This research analyzes illocutionary speech acts in Instagram comments on Abigail Muria’s interview with Al Jazeera English, focusing on the context of Indonesian protests in 2025. Using Searle’s theory of speech acts, the study classifies netizen comments into five types: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The researchers analyzed 29 comments found based on some requirements: most-liked comments, in the form of sentences, minimum 1 row maximum 6 rows, and related to the context. Through qualitative descriptive and quantitative method, also cyber discourse analysis, the findings show that expressive acts, such as thanking, encouraging, criticizing, and praising, are the most dominant, followed by assertive acts expressing agreement or criticism.  These comments reflect strong emotional and cognitive engagement with Indonesia’s political situation. Additionally, directive and commissive acts show how users use social media to mobilize action and express solidarity. This study highlights how online interactions serve as a form of cyber activism, allowing users to participate in political discourse, challenge authority, and amplify their voices globally. Ultimately, the research underscores the importance of digital platforms as spaces for collective expression and social change in the digital age.
