Abstract

Primary education is a crucial phase in shaping students’ intelligence, character, and morality. Its quality is largely determined by the role of professional and competent teachers. This article aims to theoretically analyze the role of teacher competence based on the National Education Standards (SNP) as a pillar of quality learning in elementary schools. Although numerous studies discuss teacher competence and its impact on learning quality, research that specifically positions the SNP as the primary analytical framework for evaluating teacher competence in elementary schools remains very limited. This study employs a literature review approach with a theoretical-qualitative analysis method, drawing on legal sources, national literature, and international research findings from 2015 to 2025. The findings show that the four teacher competencies in the SNP (pedagogical, personal, social, and professional) play a strategic role in creating effective, humanistic, and innovative learning. Pedagogical competence supports student-centered learning, personal competence shapes exemplary behavior, social competence fosters inclusive interaction, and professional competence enhances subject mastery and teaching creativity. International studies reinforce that the integration of these four competencies positively impacts students’ learning motivation and achievement. This study emphasizes the importance of strengthening continuous teacher training and implementing evidence-based policies to develop professional teachers with global competitiveness.

Abstract

The use of linguistic coding in advertising discourse constitutes an important communicative strategy that reflects the diversity of language structures employed in marketing practices. The deliberate integration of multiple languages in advertisements serves not only to attract audience attention but also to support the preservation and visibility of regional languages through contemporary media platforms. This study aims to investigate instances of code-switching and code-mixing in food and beverage advertisement compilation videos uploaded by Rofif Satria on  the YouTube Satria Channel. The research adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through systematic observation and note-taking procedures. Each advertisement video was carefully examined, and all verbal and written elements were transcribed. Instances of code-switching and code-mixing were then identified, classified, and documented. The collected data were organized according to their linguistic forms and categorized based on the types of code-switching and code-mixing present. The findings indicate that code-switching and code-mixing occur frequently in advertising discourse, encompassing both internal and external forms. These phenomena include the insertion of words, phrases, clauses, and baster elements. Contextual analysis of linguistic units at the word, phrase, and clause levels is essential for interpreting their communicative functions within advertisements. Overall, the results demonstrate that code-switching and code-mixing play a significant role in advertising language, functioning as effective communication strategies while contributing to the maintenance of linguistic diversity

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using films as a learning medium to improve English vocabulary mastery in seventh-grade junior high school students. The methodology used is quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design involving two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. The sample size consisted of 64 students, divided equally into 32 students in the experimental group who were taught using films, and 32 students in the control group who were taught using conventional methods. The type of film used in the learning intervention was a short animated film that was story-oriented and had easy-to-understand dialogue, chosen for its relevance to the age and potential to attract students' interest. The main statistical analysis, specifically through an independent t-test, showed a statistically significant difference between the post-test scores of the two groups. These results indicate that the intervention using films resulted in a substantially higher increase in vocabulary mastery. Quantitatively, the experimental group showed an average increase (gain score) of 25% compared to the control group, which only showed an increase of 10%. This was proven by calculations using the SPSS 24 software system . Thus, the main conclusion of this study is that the use of films is an effective and efficient learning medium for improving English vocabulary mastery in seventh-grade junior high school students.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of classroom discourse in offline and online English language classrooms, focusing on the Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) interaction pattern. While classroom discourse is critical for shaping language learning, research comparing interaction patterns in offline and online environments remains limited. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the IRF patterns in offline and online classes at UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar, Indonesia. A qualitative approach was employed, involving classroom observations and analysis of recorded interactions between lecturers and students. The findings indicate that offline classrooms foster more balanced interactions, with the I R I R I R pattern being common. In contrast, online classrooms were dominated by lecturer-initiated exchanges, with the I I I R I pattern prevailing, reflecting the passive participation of students. Key findings highlight that student elicitation was absent in online learning, while it was present in offline settings. The study emphasizes the importance of adjusting teaching strategies in online environments to enhance student engagement and participation. Future research should explore how technological tools and different teaching methodologies affect interaction dynamics across various educational contexts

Abstract

Oral presentations are often used in English courses to improve speaking skills. However, there is still little research about how students see their benefits in building speaking confidence, especially in university settings. This study aims to explore university students’ perceptions of the benefits of oral presentations in English classes. Even though oral presentations can help improve speaking skills, many students still face challenges such as low confidence, anxiety, limited vocabulary, and difficulty in organizing ideas. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with interviews, observations, and documentation as the main data sources. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to find common patterns. The results show that the main factors affecting students’ oral presentations are speaking anxiety, lack of vocabulary, little experience in public speaking, and fear of making mistakes. To deal with these problems, students used strategies such as repeated practice, using media, managing time, and getting support from lecturers and peers. This study shows the importance of oral presentations in developing speaking confidence and suggests that teachers need to provide better strategies to support students in English learning.

Abstract

Speaking skills are an essential competency in Indonesian language learning that often face obstacles, such as low student confidence and a lack of meaningful practice opportunities. This study aims to improve students' speaking skills through the implementation of the Role-Playing Method. This research uses a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach, conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were students of [State Class] at [School Name]. Data were collected through observation, speaking performance tests, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively both qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed significant improvement in each cycle. The average score for speaking skills increased from the pre-cycle (62), to Cycle I (70), and reached 82 in Cycle II. Classical learning completeness also increased from 45% (pre-cycle), to 65% (Cycle I), and 90% (Cycle II). Qualitatively, students became more confident, active, and able to communicate in authentic simulation contexts. The conclusion of this research proves that the Role-Playing Method is effective in improving students' speaking skills, as it can create contextual learning situations, reduce anxiety, and train linguistic and pragmatic competencies in an integrated manner. Therefore, this method is recommended as an alternative innovative learning strategy for the Indonesian language subject.

Abstract

Speaking self-efficacy plays a crucial role in EFL learners’ oral performance, as it influences confidence, anxiety management, and willingness to communicate. Despite the growing integration of artificial intelligence in language learning, empirical studies exploring students’ perceptions of AI voice-based tools, particularly ChatGPT Voice, remain limited in the Indonesian EFL context, especially among English major students. This study aims to investigate English Education students’ perceptions of using ChatGPT Voice and examine how it contributes to their speaking self-efficacy. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through preliminary observation interviews and in-depth semi-structured interviews with seventh-semester English Education students at Tadulako University. The findings reveal that ChatGPT Voice positively influences students’ speaking self-efficacy by increasing confidence, reducing speaking anxiety, improving fluency and vocabulary, and enhancing motivation and enjoyment. Despite minor technical challenges, students generally perceived the tool as supportive and effective. This study concludes that ChatGPT Voice serves as a valuable supplementary tool for fostering speaking self-efficacy in EFL contexts.
