Abstract

The Exploration of heroism and queer identity in literature is important for understanding today's values and emotional experiences. While many traditional stories focus on physical strength and bravery, there is a lack of research on how these ideas can be redefined through emotions and vulnerability. This study looks at Madeline Miller's The Song of Achilles, specifically how the story, told from Patroclus's viewpoint, changes the usual ideas of what it means to be a hero. Using a qualitative approach with close reading and textual analysis, the research shows how love and emotional connections are seen as heroic qualities. The main finding is that true heroism includes empathy and selflessness, challenging outdated masculine ideals. In conclusion, the study suggests that Miller’s fresh take encourages readers to adopt a broader view of heroism, highlighting the importance of emotional depth in our understanding of human experience.

Abstract

This research aimed to improve the vocabulary mastery of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Torue through an innovative learning method, namely by listening English songs. The low ability of students to remember, pronounce, and use new vocabulary in the correct context was the problem of the students expanding their vocabulary. This research used a quasi-experimental research design involving two groups: the experimental group that was taught using songs and the control group that was taught using conventional methods. The population is 369 students. A total of 60 students from classes XB and XC participated in this research, and data were collected through a pre-test and post-test to measure the improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery, especially on verbs, nouns, and adjectives. The results of the research present a significant increase in students’ vocabulary mastery after utilizing English songs. The mean post-test score of the experimental group increased from 45 to 89, while the control group only increased from 46 to 76. The hypothesis test using a t-test indicated that the t-value (6.14) was higher than the t-table value (2.042), which suggested that listening to English songs is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. This research concludes that the use of songs as a learning medium could create a fun learning atmosphere and increase students’ motivation to learn English.

Abstract

Student indiscipline remains a persistent problem that undermines the creation of a productive and conducive learning environment. Repressive disciplinary measures have often failed to foster students' internal awareness and character development. This study investigates the potential of conflict management strategies as an alternative, educative, and participatory approach to improving student discipline. Employing a qualitative method with a case study design, the research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Kawali, Ciamis Regency. Informants included the principal, subject teachers, guidance and counselling teachers, students, and parents, all selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through non-participatory observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews, and document analysis, and subsequently examined using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The findings indicate that conflict management strategies, particularly those involving open communication, humanistic disciplinary approaches, and the reinforcement of teachers' roles as character educators, contributed to the development of discipline grounded in value awareness rather than mere formal compliance. Dialogical interventions, such as discussion forums and peer mediation, effectively reduced conflict escalation and enhanced students' sense of responsibility. Moreover, the role of teachers as moral exemplars and value facilitators was identified as a critical factor in shaping sustainable disciplinary behaviour. These findings suggest that humanistic and collaborative conflict management strategies play a significant role in fostering long-term character formation and responsible conduct among students

Abstract

Early childhood is a golden period of development, making it essential to introduce statistical concepts in an active and meaningful way. However, statistics instruction in kindergartens tends to be passive and misaligned with children's developmental characteristics. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design involving children aged 5–6 years at TK Tri Insani Permata Pekanbaru. Observations were conducted before and after treatment without a control group. The average score increased from 35.67% (pretest) to 78.00% (posttest). Prior to treatment, 93.33% of children were in the "Emerging" category and 6.67% in the "Not Yet Developed" category; after treatment, 53.33% reached the "Very Well Developed" category and 46.67% the "As Expected" category. The effect of Active Mathematics on improving statistical abilities reached 65.80%, with a moderate normalized gain category. Active Mathematics is effective in enhancing early childhood statistical recognition through active, exploratory, and enjoyable learning activities.

Abstract

The Independent Learning-Independent Campus (MBKM) program is a breakthrough policy of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbudristek) to increase the relevance of higher education to the needs of the workforce. This study aims to evaluate the MBKM curriculum management in promoting linkages and matches between universities and industry. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis with various stakeholders. The results show that MBKM has succeeded in building university-industry collaboration through internships, collaborative projects, and work-based learning, which have contributed to improving students' technical competencies and soft skills. However, key challenges include: (1) the gap between the orientation of long-term competency development of universities and the short-term needs of industry, particularly in the technology and digital fields; (2) administrative complexity in recognizing credits and synchronizing schedules; and (3) evaluation mechanisms that are still administrative in nature and do not adequately measure the long-term impact on graduate employability. This study recommends strengthening strategic partnerships, simplifying administrative procedures, and developing an outcome-based evaluation system and structured feedback mechanisms to optimize the MBKM program going forward.

Abstract

Sexual identity is influenced by personal experiences, social norms, and cultural expectations. Although research on LGBTQ+ issues has increased in recent years, stories about bisexual men who have experienced trauma remain limited and underrepresented. This study explores how the Netflix series Baby Reindeer, based on the real-life story of Richard Gadd, presents the complex journey of discovering sexual identity through trauma and emotional struggle. Using qualitative content analysis and narrative analysis guided by queer theory—particularly the ideas of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler—this research focuses on three key episodes to examine how power, identity, and social pressure affect the main character, Donny. The findings reveal that Donny’s struggle illustrates how bisexual identity is shaped by shame, silence, and the need for acceptance. Baby Reindeer offers a meaningful portrayal of queer male experiences and serves as a powerful example of how media can challenge stereotypes and foster deeper understanding of sexual identity.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of deixis in the lyrics of Harris J’s song “Promise”, focusing on deixis categories, their frequency, and their referential meanings. The objectives are to identify the types of deixis present in the lyrics, determine the most dominant type, and interpret the referential meanings of each deictic expression. Grounded in George Yule’s (2006) theory of deixis and employing a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected by listening to the song and closely examining the lyrics. The findings reveal three types of deixis: person deixis, temporal deixis, and spatial deixis. Person deixis was the most frequently used, with 60 instances (68.97%), followed by spatial deixis (13 instances, 14.94%) and temporal deixis (11 instances, 12.64%). The referents of person deixis typically include the singer and the listener, underscoring the emotional and personal tone of the lyrics. Temporal deixis points to moments of memory and promise, while spatial deixis reflects emotional proximity and movement. Overall, deixis in the song enriches its expressive quality, strengthening the listener’s emotional connection with the narrative.

Abstract

This study explores Islamic Religious Education (PAI) students’ perceptions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in learning Islamic Education History, prompted by AI’s growing adoption for academic tasks like writing, discussions, and summarization. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected via in-depth interviews and observations of 2024 cohort PAI students at FITK, State Islamic University of North Sumatra. Findings indicate positive views of AI as a tool to streamline tasks and simplify material comprehension, though dependency emerged during time constraints or difficulty understanding sources. While cognitively beneficial, AI was perceived as inadequate for conveying the depth of Islamic historical and spiritual values. Students emphasized the need for lecturer guidance and institutional policies to ensure ethical, responsible use. The study concludes that AI is a valuable yet incomplete tool, requiring balance with comprehension and academic ethics to uphold Islamic education’s essence.
