Abstract

This research paper attempts to explore the novel, A Farewell to Arms through the lens of Existential approach and it explores the role played by Existentialism in the novel. Hemingway is one of the greatest American writers in the twentieth century. A Farewell to Arms, his most famous anti-war novel. An American volunteer joining Italian army falls in love with a British nurse but their love is destroyed mercilessly by the war. Hemingway expresses his outlooks on the world, on life and on individual in this novel. The world under Hemingway’s pen is a chaotic and irrational world. People living in this world discard traditional values and faith, living a nihilistic and miserable life. Although the world is absurd and life is nihilistic, the protagonist has fighting spirit. He actively participates in life and pursues the meaning of life. He fights courageously against the danger and death in adversity to realize his existential values. These views are in accordance with existentialist philosophy rising in the twentieth century. Existentialism mainly explores human existence, the absurdity of the world and the meaninglessness and purposelessness of life. Meanwhile it greatly emphasizes man’s freedom of choice and action. Living in a chaotic and absurd world, man can never get rid of the sense of nihility. Man has to face it bravely. There is existentialist tendency in A Farewell to Arms, and Hemingway is indeed a writer with existentialist thought.

Abstract

This research produces a portfolio-based short story writing assessment instrument. The research method used is the Research and Development method which refers to the development of Borg and Gall (in Tegeh et al, 2014: 7-13). The module development process is carried out with three stages: a preliminary study stage, initial product development and product trials. The results showed that the feasibility assessment by material experts consisted of 4 aspects namely content feasibility aspects obtained an average of 77 with effective criteria, aspects of the feasibility of the presentation obtained an average of 92.5 with very effective criteria, aspects of language eligibility obtained on average 77 with effective criteria, and aspects of contextual assessment obtained an average of 79.9 with effective criteria, evaluation of eligibility by instrument evaluation experts obtained an average of 85 with very effective criteria. The assessment interprets the meaning of the short story text, both verbally and in writing fulfilling the reliable criteria with a reliability of 0.7, the Assessment identifies the abstract, orientation, complications, resolution, evaluation, and koda meets the reliable criteria with a reliability of 0.7 and the assessment of writing the story text short meet the reliable criteria with a reliability of 0.97. This research impacts on the use of portfolio-based short story writing assessment instruments.

Abstract

Austrian British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein is one of the greatest philosophers in the 20th century. He mostly works in analytic philosophical thought in topics as diverse as logic and language, perception and intention, ethic and religion, aesthetic and culture. Philosophers often create their own vocabularies by giving special meanings to ordinary terms and phrases. Wittgenstein coinages the term of “language games” and the ‘private language argument”. His argument on the language is the rules of the use of ordinary language is neither right nor wrong, neither true nor false, the language is merely useful for the particular applications in which they are applied . Language is defined not as a system of representation but as a system of devices for engaging in various sorts of social activity, hence ‘the meaning of the word is its use in the language.

Abstract

This study aims to determine: (1) differences in student learning outcomes taught by using the discovery learning strategy with student learning outcomes taught by expository strategies, (2) differences in the learning outcomes of students who have high motivation and low motivation by using learning learning strategies , (3) differences in learning outcomes of students who have high motivation and low motivation using expository learning strategies, and (4) the interaction between the effects of learning strategies and motivation on student learning outcomes. The research method used is quantitative with a quasi-experimental model of factorial design 2 x 2. The research sample is 1 class for discovery learning strategy learning and 1 class is expository learning strategy. Data collection instruments are tests and questionnaires. The data analysis technique is a two-way analysis of variance. The difference in value between the experimental class and the control class is not significant enough so that it can be interpreted that there cannot be a significant difference in student learning outcomes between the experimental class and the control class.

Abstract

It is known that in addition to biking and walking, many students who prefer to be taken by parents or use an online motorcycle taxi to go to school. Generally, going to school using a bicycle is an alternative means of transportation that is preferred, but because of the lack of parking lots of students who ultimately prefer to be picked up and dropped off. In addition, parenting parents who are too protective of children to require children to be picked up when going to school also indirectly have an unfavorable impact on the child's level of fitness and independence. Whereas for elementary school children, the level of fitness and independence are things that must be developed for their future survival. Children must understand the importance of physical activity and implement it in their lives. For example, children who go to school, they must be more able to think about how to move their body to get to school rather than just relying on the transfer of parents. By walking to school, will increase physical activity of children. Therefore, researchers are then interested in conducting further research. The results of this study are that there are significant differences in the fitness variable of transportation used with a significance level of 0,000 and an F value of 21,914 with a mean difference of 73,393. Walking is the most dominant factor to improve fitness compared to cycling and parents take a motorbike ride to and from school. As for the independence variable there is no significant difference in the mode of transportation used with a significance value of 0.414 with an F value of 0.890. The conclusion of the research is the use of modes of transportation to the right school can increase children's fitness. Walking is the best transportation to improve fitness then followed by cycling and parents take a ride on a motorcycle. However, to increase a significant independence, it is still not possible to use transportation mode selection because parental care is the determining factor for children's independence other than the education system in schools and the surrounding environment.

Abstract

A question that has interested physical activity researches in recent years is whether involvement in Physical Activity (PA) is associated with the adoption of other health behaviours, such as good nutrition and no smoking. In this pilot study was implemented the complex Diet Questionnaire, on PA, Health, Nutrition, within the group of the healthy adults, specifically selected students of the Faculty of Sport and PE (in Total 74 respondents). Applied Q contains 7 segments (23 items) dealing with: Medical and Social status, Body mass, and Body High, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Life Style. Study results are presented as comparative analysis of gender differences. Applied variables within (1–7) segments have non parametric properties. The proposed health outcomes suggest that considerable public health benefits could be achieved through PA. The identification of PA patterns is important if any effort to plan public health initiatives in this field.

Abstract

The aims of this study to find out the quality of E-learning based on learning media using Moodle LMS on text of observation. This type of research is development research in the field of education known as Research and Development (R&D). Development research (development research) is research that is used to produce certain products and test the effectiveness of these products (Tegeh and I.M, 2013). The result of this study show that The quality of e-learning based learning media using LMS Moodle which was developed as a learning media on the observation report text material is stated to be a useful and effective contribution in improving the quality of learning outcomes of 10th grade TJA1 Vocational School Telkom Shandy Putra Medan. This is because there is a significant difference in the learning outcomes of the average value of students before using e-learning based learning media (pre-test) ie 57.0 or only about 52% are able to exceed KKM and after using e-based learning media learning using LMS Moodle (post-test) the average value of students increased to 77.0% or can be interpreted as 100% of students able to exceed the KKM. Based on these data the difference is increased by 20% or can be interpreted student learning outcomes increased by 58%.
