Abstract

Nutritional problems among school-aged children, including students in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), remain a significant issue due to their impact on growth, cognitive development, and quality of life. The pesantren environment, characterized by a tight schedule, limited dietary variety, and low nutritional knowledge, poses a risk of unbalanced dietary patterns and long-term health problems. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of nutrition education using wayang (traditional puppet) media on the nutritional knowledge of students at Pondok Pesantren Safinatul Huda, Banyuwangi. The methods employed included balanced nutrition socialization, education on the six food groups, demonstration of menu preparation using local ingredients (purple sweet potato), and delivery of materials through wayang characters as an engaging and memorable cultural medium. The study sample consisted of 40 junior high school students (santri). Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test to evaluate differences in nutritional knowledge before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant increase in the mean nutritional knowledge score from 72.15 to 77.90 (p < 0.001). Wayang media proved effective in enhancing understanding, motivating the adoption of healthy eating patterns, and providing a culturally relevant and contextual educational approach.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the major global health problems with a continuously increasing prevalence. Various epidemiological studies have shown a rising trend in the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) worldwide. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 2021 estimated that 537 million adults aged 20–79 years worldwide are living with diabetes, representing 10.5% of the global population in that age group. This number is projected to increase to 643 million (11.3%) by 2030 and 783 million by 2045. These data emphasize the importance of implementing self-management strategies for individuals with diabetes. Effective diabetes control can be achieved through early prevention efforts by enhancing self-care abilities within the family level. This community service program aims to improve the knowledge and skills of people with diabetes in self-care management and to establish support groups that play a role in sustaining diabetes management at the community level. The methods implemented in this activity included health education and demonstration sessions related to diabetes self-care management. The results of this program indicated an increase in participants’ knowledge and skills regarding diabetes self-care and the establishment of self-care management support groups for people with diabetes. It is expected that the active roles of community health cadres, healthcare workers, and local governments will continue to strengthen sustainable diabetes self-management and control programs.

Abstract

The purpose of Community Service is to increase the knowledge and service of target partners regarding Screening for the prevention and control of Non-Communicable Diseases (Hypertension, Diabetes mellitus, Hyperuresis and hypercholesterolemia) through empowering PKK cadres and mothers in screening for PTM examinations, using the "Lab Health Pocket" application. The solution and method in this community service is to provide education and training on overcoming PTM risk factors and community-based prevention by training PTM screening using simple laboratory examinations using the POCT method, PTM monitoring using the results of the "Lab Health Pocket" innovation research. The results of PkM are an increase in the knowledge and skills of PKK cadres and mothers about screening, prevention and control of Non-Communicable Diseases (Hypertension, Diabetes mellitus, Hyperuresis and hypercholesterolemia) up to 100%, increasing the knowledge and skills of PKK cadres and mothers in using digital sphygmomanometers, POCT GCU tools, the "Lab Health Pocket" application to make it easier for individuals to evaluate their own health conditions or get initial information about potential health problems up to 85%. and the formation of a village health service post for simple PTM lab examination screening.

Abstract

Hypertension is known as the silent killer because it typically doesn't cause symptoms or complaints, so many sufferers are unaware of it. Central Lombok Regency has the second-highest number of hypertension cases in West Nusa Tenggara Province, with 58,666 cases, consisting of 27,980 men and 30,686 women. Most people with hypertension are unable to control their condition, likely due to varying knowledge and perceptions about managing their condition. One health program that can be used to change attitudes among people with hypertension is to provide nutritional information or education about the DASH diet, which is essential for blood pressure control. The purpose of this Community Service Program (PKM) is to increase the knowledge of hypertensive patients in an effort to improve their health status so that blood pressure remains under control and thus can prevent or inhibit complications of other diseases. The PkM activity was carried out through direct counseling for outpatients at the Praya Health Center using video media, and blood pressure measurements and measuring pre-post-test knowledge. The results of this PkM activity were increased patient knowledge and an average patient blood pressure of 145.5 mmHg for systolic blood pressure and 85,3 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure

Abstract

Stunting in toddlers is a nutritional problem not only in Indonesia but also globally. The WHO states that stunting becomes a health problem when the prevalence reaches >20%. The stunting prevalence trend in Indonesia has changed significantly since 2014, reaching 37% and dropping to 21.6% in 2022. Based on data from the Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI) from 2021 to 2022, the incidence of stunting increased from 24.4% to 21.6%, wasting from 7.1% to 7.7%, and underweight from 17.0% to 12.1%. West Nusa Tenggara Province has a stunting incidence of 31.4%, ranking it fourth in Indonesia. Community service activities aim to empower integrated health post (Posyandu) cadres by providing education and reinforcement about local wisdom-based baby gym. Results of community service activities: Most Posyandu cadres (17 people) had good knowledge, and 30 people (100%) were able to perform baby gym. Evaluation results showed that the cadres were able to teach baby gym to 30 mothers with babies and toddlers. It is hoped that mothers who have received education about baby gym can perform baby gym regularly with their babies and toddlers to support optimal child growth and development and prevent stunting.

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is a form of maternal behavior in providing exclusive breast milk to her baby. In Indonesia, the achievement rate of exclusive breastfeeding reached 37.3% in 2018. Meanwhile, in West Nusa Tenggara Province, the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding in 2018 was at the lowest figure, namely 20.3%. The achievement of exclusive breastfeeding in Batu Layar District was 98.8% and for exclusive breastfeeding coverage in Lembah Sari Village was 97.4%, this figure is lower than the District figure. One of the causes of this failure in breastfeeding is because the mother does not feel comfortable when the first week of the baby's birth is because in the first week the production of breast milk has started to increase but is not followed by the maximum sucking power of the baby so that the mother tends to experience breast milk stasis. The aim of this Community Service activity is to empower Community health workers by increasing their knowledge and skills in breast milk pumping techniques.Through integrated health Community health workers, pregnant and postpartum women can obtain information related to breast care (expressing breast milk). Efforts that can be made to overcome the current challenges of exclusive breastfeeding coverage include empowering cadres through breast care (expressing breast milk) classes consisting of 30 Community health workers. Community service activities are carried out by providing education and demonstrations of breast care (expressing breast milk) through video media uploaded to YouTube. The results of the community service show a change in skills, from the majority having adequate skills to becoming skilled. In conclusion, empowering Community health workers through breast care classes is effective in improving breast milk expression skills, making Community health workers agents of change who are ready to support the success of exclusive breastfeeding in Lembah Sari Village.
