Abstract

This study aims to explore junior high school students’ needs for the development of local folklore-based English learning materials. The study employed a descriptive research design using a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data. The participants were 25 eighth-grade students from a junior high school in Ternate. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of both closed-ended and open-ended questions. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties in several English skills, particularly speaking, as well as challenges related to vocabulary and grammar. In addition, most students had limited experience in learning English through local folklore, although they were somewhat familiar with such stories. Despite this, students demonstrated positive attitudes toward folklore-based learning and expressed interest in using stories from their own cultural background. They also showed a preference for interactive learning activities such as storytelling, role-play, and group discussions. These findings indicate that local folklore has strong potential to support the development of meaningful and culturally relevant English learning materials. Such materials can enhance students’ language development, motivation, and engagement. Therefore, incorporating students’ needs into the development of folklore-based English learning materials is essential to ensure their effectiveness and relevance in the learning process.

Abstract

Bullying behavior in elementary schools is a problem that affects and disrupts most learning environments in schools. Bullying behavior also hinders students' personal, social, and learning development, requiring action from the school and guidance and counseling services. This study aims to analyze and describe bullying behavior among fifth-grade students at SDN Berangas Timur 1, including its forms, the factors behind it, and its impacts. In addition, it aims to examine its relationship with Albert Bandura's social learning theory and guidance and counseling in elementary schools. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach. The research subjects were 48 students in grades VA and VB at SDN Berangas Timur 1. The data collection technique used a bullying behavior questionnaire that has passed validity and reliability tests. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, presented as percentages and score categories. The study found that bullying behavior at SDN Berangas Timur 1 was relatively low, though it still occurred frequently. The dominant forms of bullying were physical, verbal, and relational bullying. The dominant influencing factor for bullying was personal factors (self-confidence), and the perceived impact encompassed all aspects (physical, psychological, academic, and social).

Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ recount writing skills by implementing digital storytelling in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), consisting of two cycles, each including planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The participants were 29 tenth-grade students. Data were collected through writing tests, classroom observations, and student questionnaires. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ writing performance. In Cycle 1, most students were categorized at the “poor” and “fair” levels, with a mean score of 61.0. However, in Cycle 2, the mean score increased substantially to 84.1, and 75.9% of the students achieved the “good” level, meeting the predetermined criterion of success. Improvements were observed in all aspects of writing, including content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. In addition, the findings revealed that students responded positively to the implementation of digital storytelling, demonstrating increased motivation, engagement, and participation. The integration of multimedia elements helped students generate ideas, organize events more coherently, and express their experiences more confidently. These findings suggest that digital storytelling is an effective instructional medium that provides meaningful input and supports the writing process,s rather than merely serving as a tool for digital product creation. Therefore, it is recommended that EFL teachers integrate digital storytelling into writing instruction, particularly to help students develop ideas and improve overall writing quality.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the diminishing psychological role of fathers in childcare is increasingly common in Indonesia, influenced in part by the strong view that fathers only serve as breadwinners. This lack of involvement has the potential to negatively impact an individual's emotional stability, particularly for women transitioning into adulthood, where they are increasingly expected to be emotionally independent and no longer dependent on their parents. This study aims to analyze the influence of this condition on the level of emotional independence in Generation Z women. The approach used was quantitative with a correlational design. Data collection was conducted online through a purposive sampling technique with 173 respondents, with the criteria of women aged 18 to 25 years in the early adult phase. The research instrument used an adapted questionnaire that had undergone feasibility testing, with the results of 44 statements being declared valid and having a fairly good level of reliability (Cronbach's Alpha of 0.670). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. The results showed that the level of fatherlessness among respondents was in the fairly high category, with an average value of 61.37. Hypothesis testing revealed a significant correlation between these conditions and emotional independence (a significance value of 0.000 and a regression coefficient of -0.226). This finding suggests that any increase in the sense of role loss will decrease an individual's ability to manage their feelings independently. This study concludes that paternal involvement is essential as a foundation for strong family bonds. The absence of this role has been shown to hinder adolescents' individuation process significantly.
