Abstract

This study aims to explore junior high school students’ needs for the development of local folklore-based English learning materials. The study employed a descriptive research design using a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data. The participants were 25 eighth-grade students from a junior high school in Ternate. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of both closed-ended and open-ended questions. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties in several English skills, particularly speaking, as well as challenges related to vocabulary and grammar. In addition, most students had limited experience in learning English through local folklore, although they were somewhat familiar with such stories. Despite this, students demonstrated positive attitudes toward folklore-based learning and expressed interest in using stories from their own cultural background. They also showed a preference for interactive learning activities such as storytelling, role-play, and group discussions. These findings indicate that local folklore has strong potential to support the development of meaningful and culturally relevant English learning materials. Such materials can enhance students’ language development, motivation, and engagement. Therefore, incorporating students’ needs into the development of folklore-based English learning materials is essential to ensure their effectiveness and relevance in the learning process.

Abstract

Bullying behavior in elementary schools is a problem that affects and disrupts most learning environments in schools. Bullying behavior also hinders students' personal, social, and learning development, requiring action from the school and guidance and counseling services. This study aims to analyze and describe bullying behavior among fifth-grade students at SDN Berangas Timur 1, including its forms, the factors behind it, and its impacts. In addition, it aims to examine its relationship with Albert Bandura's social learning theory and guidance and counseling in elementary schools. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach. The research subjects were 48 students in grades VA and VB at SDN Berangas Timur 1. The data collection technique used a bullying behavior questionnaire that has passed validity and reliability tests. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, presented as percentages and score categories. The study found that bullying behavior at SDN Berangas Timur 1 was relatively low, though it still occurred frequently. The dominant forms of bullying were physical, verbal, and relational bullying. The dominant influencing factor for bullying was personal factors (self-confidence), and the perceived impact encompassed all aspects (physical, psychological, academic, and social).

Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ recount writing skills by implementing digital storytelling in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), consisting of two cycles, each including planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The participants were 29 tenth-grade students. Data were collected through writing tests, classroom observations, and student questionnaires. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ writing performance. In Cycle 1, most students were categorized at the “poor” and “fair” levels, with a mean score of 61.0. However, in Cycle 2, the mean score increased substantially to 84.1, and 75.9% of the students achieved the “good” level, meeting the predetermined criterion of success. Improvements were observed in all aspects of writing, including content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. In addition, the findings revealed that students responded positively to the implementation of digital storytelling, demonstrating increased motivation, engagement, and participation. The integration of multimedia elements helped students generate ideas, organize events more coherently, and express their experiences more confidently. These findings suggest that digital storytelling is an effective instructional medium that provides meaningful input and supports the writing process,s rather than merely serving as a tool for digital product creation. Therefore, it is recommended that EFL teachers integrate digital storytelling into writing instruction, particularly to help students develop ideas and improve overall writing quality.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the diminishing psychological role of fathers in childcare is increasingly common in Indonesia, influenced in part by the strong view that fathers only serve as breadwinners. This lack of involvement has the potential to negatively impact an individual's emotional stability, particularly for women transitioning into adulthood, where they are increasingly expected to be emotionally independent and no longer dependent on their parents. This study aims to analyze the influence of this condition on the level of emotional independence in Generation Z women. The approach used was quantitative with a correlational design. Data collection was conducted online through a purposive sampling technique with 173 respondents, with the criteria of women aged 18 to 25 years in the early adult phase. The research instrument used an adapted questionnaire that had undergone feasibility testing, with the results of 44 statements being declared valid and having a fairly good level of reliability (Cronbach's Alpha of 0.670). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. The results showed that the level of fatherlessness among respondents was in the fairly high category, with an average value of 61.37. Hypothesis testing revealed a significant correlation between these conditions and emotional independence (a significance value of 0.000 and a regression coefficient of -0.226). This finding suggests that any increase in the sense of role loss will decrease an individual's ability to manage their feelings independently. This study concludes that paternal involvement is essential as a foundation for strong family bonds. The absence of this role has been shown to hinder adolescents' individuation process significantly.

Abstract

Working memory is a short-term cognitive system that allows individuals to actively store and manipulate information in a short period of time. This capacity forms the foundation for vocabulary mastery, literacy, and mathematical reasoning during childhood development. Given its vital role in predicting academic success and socio-emotional adaptability, identifying variables capable of optimizing working memory function from an early age is urgent in educational psychology discourse. This study aims to analyze crucial factors influencing working memory optimization in children through a systematic literature review. The analysis was conducted based on a synthesis of data from various reputable journals from 2020 to 2025 and related fundamental literature. A qualitative approach was used to explore the relationship between biological factors, the environment, and technical interventions on working memory performance. The findings indicate that working memory efficiency is not static but is influenced multidimensionally. Internal factors include nutritional status, where suggestion habits have been shown to modulate verbal fluency and memory capacity. Externally, environmental stimulation through structured cognitive training, such as the n-back task, and the quality of parent-child interactions have a significant impact. However, there is a negative correlation between excessive digital media exposure (screen time) and children's auditory processing and attention abilities. Furthermore, socioeconomic disparities and emotional regulation act as moderators in the development of the neural circuitry underlying working memory. Working memory is a plastic cognitive function and is responsive to strategic interventions. Optimizing children's learning potential requires synergy between nutritional support, technology exposure management, and adaptive teaching methods. The implications of this research encourage the formulation of more holistic, evidence-based early childhood education policies.

Abstract

The phenomenon of juvenile delinquency, low social awareness, and suboptimal character formation in the school environment indicates that the internalization of civic values remains a challenge in educational practice. Social Studies (IPS) learning plays a strategic role as a medium for instilling values, but its implementation has not fully enabled consistent changes in student behavior. This study aims to analyze the process of internalizing civic values in IPS learning through the perspectives of teachers and students at Simpang Hulu Junior High School. The study used a qualitative, descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, involving IPS teachers and students as research subjects. Data analysis used Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's interactive model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The study identified three main points. First, values are internalized through the integration of values into learning materials, habituation in learning activities, and role modeling by teachers. Second, teachers have a strong awareness of the importance of instilling civic values, whereas students interpret values situationally, based on their learning experiences and peer environments. Third, there is a gap between students' cognitive understanding of values and consistent behavioral practices in everyday life. This study concludes that the internalization of civic values in social studies learning is a dynamic process influenced by individual factors, the social environment, and pedagogical approaches. Strengthening participatory and experiential learning is necessary for more effective internalization of civic values in students.

Abstract

21st-century education demands learning that is not only oriented towards cognitive aspects but also capable of developing students' social attitudes. Social studies learning plays an important role in fostering cooperation, empathy, and social responsibility, but school practices remain teacher-centered, resulting in suboptimal development. This condition demands the application of contextual learning strategies that link material to students' real lives. This study aims to describe and analyze the implementation of contextual learning strategies to improve students' social attitudes in social studies at Simpang Hulu State Senior High School. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects were social studies teachers and 10th-grade students, selected purposively. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using an interactive model through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that contextual learning strategies have been implemented through the components of constructivism, learning communities, and questioning, although not optimally and still partially. Learning that links material to real contexts encourages students' social interactions through group discussions. Students' social attitudes improve in cooperation and responsibility, while empathy develops gradually. Supporting factors include curriculum flexibility, environmental potential, and students' social interactions. Inhibiting factors include teacher preparedness, student learning habits, time constraints, and learning media. This strategy plays a crucial role when implemented consistently and systematically.

Abstract

Science learning in elementary schools requires a contextual learning process so that students are able to understand concepts meaningfully and relevant to everyday life. Utilizing local wisdom is a strategic alternative because it can connect learning materials with students' socio-cultural environment. Conditions at SD Negeri 02 Sungai Melayu Rayak, Ketapang Regency, show the potential of the river environment, plantations, and local community life that can be utilized as learning resources. This study aims to describe and analyze the role of teachers in developing science learning based on local wisdom in improving students' contextual understanding. The study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive type. The research subjects consisted of teachers and students who were selected purposively. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation, while data analysis used an interactive model through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the role of teachers is realized as learning designers, facilitators, cultural mediators, and evaluators. The implementation of learning is carried out by linking science material with local contexts such as river ecosystems, plantations, and community activities so that learning becomes more meaningful. Students' contextual understanding improved through their ability to connect concepts to everyday life, explain environmental phenomena, and demonstrate concern for environmental sustainability. Supporting factors included local environmental potential and active student involvement, while barriers included limited planning, teacher preparedness, and learning media. This study concluded that local wisdom-based science learning is effective in improving students' contextual understanding when supported by optimal teacher involvement, systematic learning management, and the use of the local environment as the primary learning resource.

Abstract

Speaking skills are among the important competencies in Indonesian language learning in elementary schools because they relate to students' abilities to express ideas, communicate effectively, and interact in social environments. However, in practice, students' speaking skills remain relatively low because the learning process remains teacher-centered and does not provide opportunities for active speaking practice. This study aims to analyze the effect of the Joyful Learning-based role-playing method on improving the speaking skills of sixth-grade students at SDN Gugus VI Sepaku. This study uses a quantitative, experimental approach with a pretest–posttest control-group design. The research subjects were 54 students, comprising 27 in the experimental group and 27 in the control group. Data collection techniques included speaking skills tests and observations of student activities. Data analysis used descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, and Independent-Samples t-tests. The results showed that the average score for students' speaking skills in the experimental group increased from 59.44 in the pretest to 83.56 in the posttest, whereas in the control group it increased from 58.59 to 69.26. The results of the hypothesis test showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the two groups. The N-Gain analysis also showed greater improvement in the experimental group than in the control group. Thus, the Joyful Learning-based role-playing method has proven effective in improving elementary school students' speaking skills.
