Abstract

Claiming that “this may be the most important speech I’ve ever made,” this speech was one of the most noteworthy turning points of the 2020 United States presidential election. This paper aims at analyzing Trump’s speech on voter fraud claims that was released on December 2, 2020 from a critical discourse perspective. This descriptive qualitative research describes and investigates the main features, the main points of concern, and the objectives tried to achieve by delivering the speech. The result of the study shows that the main features of Trump’s political discourse include simplicity, repetition, parataxis, frames, deictics, hyperboles, inarticulation, and hearsay evidence. These features reflect Trump’s personality as well as his supporters’ characteristics. Regarding the main points of the discourse, there are several issues, including pandemic, swing states, mail-in ballots, and rigged system, that Trump tries to convey. There are also further implications or objectives that Trump tries to achieve by releasing the speech: keeping loyal supporters and avoiding prosecution.

Abstract

This study investigated the functions of sentences used in Colorbox's Instagram captions applying Greenbaum & Nelson (2009) framework: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. The aims of this study were to identify and analyze their use and to identify which types are the most frequently utilized. To achieve these objectives, 30 captions containing 58 sentences posted by Colorbox from January to December 2024 were selected using purposive random sampling. The captions were analyzed using qualitative methods. Each sentence in the text was examined and categorized based on its function. The results showed that imperative sentences are the most frequently used (46%), followed by interrogative sentences (28%), declarative sentences (21%), and exclamation sentences (5%). Imperative sentences are often used to encourage actions such as commenting or tapping on a link. The other sentence types are used to provide information, ask questions, or express emotions. These findings showed that Colorbox uses sentence functions effectively to communicate and interact with its audience. The results of this study give two implications both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the results enrich the knowledge on functions of sentences. Practically, the results provide an insight for content creators and marketing practitioners to write more interesting, clear, and engaging captions.

Abstract

In learning English, students often struggle to maintain enthusiasm and interest because language learning is perceived as boring. Therefore, teachers need to be selective in applying appropriate teaching methods and techniques. These methods are essential for helping teachers achieve learning objectives. To sustain student engagement in English lessons, games can serve as an effective alternative. One such approach is gamification, which integrates game elements and mechanics into learning to boost students' motivation and interest. This study investigates the effectiveness of gamification using Wordwall in enhancing students' vocabulary mastery at MIS Muhammadiyah Wuring, Maumere during the 2024-2025 academic year. The research adopts a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design and purposive sampling, involving two fourth-grade classes an experimental class using Wordwall and a control class (p < 0.05) without it with involving the fourth-grade students of MIS Muhammadiyah Wuring. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, then analyzed using simple linear regression in SPSS 22. Findings show a notable improvement in vocabulary mastery in the experimental class. This supports gamification, especially Wordwall, as an effective tool in engaging students and enhancing vocabulary skills in English learning. This study adds to previous gamification and Wordwall research by providing quantitative experimental evidence from an elementary Islamic school context, specifically involving fourth-grade students, and by statistically measuring the effect of Wordwall-based gamification on vocabulary mastery using simple linear regression analysis.

Abstract

Translating cultural words of news articles can be problematic, especially for students and novice journalists, as they may have different socio and cultural context from that of the target audience. With the development of machine translation, it is important to investigate how it can help solve the problem. In collaboration with a local online newspaper in Bandung, Indonesia, this study attempts to compare how machine translation (MT) and human translators (HT) translate Indonesian cultural words into English, aiming at producing guidelines of translation for dealing with cultural imbedded words. In identifying the procedures, Newmark’s (1988) procedures of translation are utilized. The data are cultural words taken from 22 selected Indonesian online news articles from which 82 sentences containing cultural words are extracted. They are translated into English by machine translation and by intern journalists and a lecturer of translation. The study shows similar results: the transference procedure is mostly used (62.19% to 73.17%) in translating the cultural words by both MT and HTs. This indicates that the cultural words are retained and need to be edited. This also implies that guidelines for post-editing cultural word translation need to be developed to assist students and novice journalists to fix the problems.
