Abstract

Claiming that “this may be the most important speech I’ve ever made,” this speech was one of the most noteworthy turning points of the 2020 United States presidential election. This paper aims at analyzing Trump’s speech on voter fraud claims that was released on December 2, 2020 from a critical discourse perspective. This descriptive qualitative research describes and investigates the main features, the main points of concern, and the objectives tried to achieve by delivering the speech. The result of the study shows that the main features of Trump’s political discourse include simplicity, repetition, parataxis, frames, deictics, hyperboles, inarticulation, and hearsay evidence. These features reflect Trump’s personality as well as his supporters’ characteristics. Regarding the main points of the discourse, there are several issues, including pandemic, swing states, mail-in ballots, and rigged system, that Trump tries to convey. There are also further implications or objectives that Trump tries to achieve by releasing the speech: keeping loyal supporters and avoiding prosecution.

Abstract

This study investigated the functions of sentences used in Colorbox's Instagram captions applying Greenbaum & Nelson (2009) framework: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. The aims of this study were to identify and analyze their use and to identify which types are the most frequently utilized. To achieve these objectives, 30 captions containing 58 sentences posted by Colorbox from January to December 2024 were selected using purposive random sampling. The captions were analyzed using qualitative methods. Each sentence in the text was examined and categorized based on its function. The results showed that imperative sentences are the most frequently used (46%), followed by interrogative sentences (28%), declarative sentences (21%), and exclamation sentences (5%). Imperative sentences are often used to encourage actions such as commenting or tapping on a link. The other sentence types are used to provide information, ask questions, or express emotions. These findings showed that Colorbox uses sentence functions effectively to communicate and interact with its audience. The results of this study give two implications both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the results enrich the knowledge on functions of sentences. Practically, the results provide an insight for content creators and marketing practitioners to write more interesting, clear, and engaging captions.

Abstract

In learning English, students often struggle to maintain enthusiasm and interest because language learning is perceived as boring. Therefore, teachers need to be selective in applying appropriate teaching methods and techniques. These methods are essential for helping teachers achieve learning objectives. To sustain student engagement in English lessons, games can serve as an effective alternative. One such approach is gamification, which integrates game elements and mechanics into learning to boost students' motivation and interest. This study investigates the effectiveness of gamification using Wordwall in enhancing students' vocabulary mastery at MIS Muhammadiyah Wuring, Maumere during the 2024-2025 academic year. The research adopts a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design and purposive sampling, involving two fourth-grade classes an experimental class using Wordwall and a control class (p < 0.05) without it with involving the fourth-grade students of MIS Muhammadiyah Wuring. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, then analyzed using simple linear regression in SPSS 22. Findings show a notable improvement in vocabulary mastery in the experimental class. This supports gamification, especially Wordwall, as an effective tool in engaging students and enhancing vocabulary skills in English learning. This study adds to previous gamification and Wordwall research by providing quantitative experimental evidence from an elementary Islamic school context, specifically involving fourth-grade students, and by statistically measuring the effect of Wordwall-based gamification on vocabulary mastery using simple linear regression analysis.

Abstract

Translating cultural words of news articles can be problematic, especially for students and novice journalists, as they may have different socio and cultural context from that of the target audience. With the development of machine translation, it is important to investigate how it can help solve the problem. In collaboration with a local online newspaper in Bandung, Indonesia, this study attempts to compare how machine translation (MT) and human translators (HT) translate Indonesian cultural words into English, aiming at producing guidelines of translation for dealing with cultural imbedded words. In identifying the procedures, Newmark’s (1988) procedures of translation are utilized. The data are cultural words taken from 22 selected Indonesian online news articles from which 82 sentences containing cultural words are extracted. They are translated into English by machine translation and by intern journalists and a lecturer of translation. The study shows similar results: the transference procedure is mostly used (62.19% to 73.17%) in translating the cultural words by both MT and HTs. This indicates that the cultural words are retained and need to be edited. This also implies that guidelines for post-editing cultural word translation need to be developed to assist students and novice journalists to fix the problems.

This article hires qualitative method, Grounded Theory by developing the students’ competence in writing skill. The subject of the research was twenty first students of English Program, Bali Dwipa University. The model teaching used Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE). The students are guided to establish paragraphs by developing the main topic in deductive, inductive, and both deductive and inductive strategies. The result of this research revealed that: In the analysis phase, the lecturer must have good competence to solve problems owned by the students. In the implementation phase, the students needed more times to improve their metacognition. The evaluation indicated that the students had very limited conjunctions used in the paragraphs. ADDIE is an appropriate model in teaching skill since the model enables the students to correct the error. The result of this research has significances for applied linguistic researches such as; Teaching and Learning, Semantics, Psycholinguistics, and Discourse Analysis. Therefore, the result of this research adds applied linguistics references which can be used as reference for the following research.

Abstract

The growing presence of English in K-pop lyrics has drawn attention to how Korean singers produce English in professional recording contexts. This study analyzes phonological simplification in the English lyrics of Aespa's title tracks, focusing on the types and frequencies of connected speech processes present in their recordings. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the data consist of five title tracks released between 2023 and 2025: Spicy, Supernova, Armageddon, Whiplash, and Dirty Work. Audio recordings were transcribed using narrow IPA transcription and compared against General American citation forms, with each phonological difference coded as a connected speech process based on predefined categories from connected speech theory. The analysis identified 77 tokens across six process types. Reduction (45.5%) and elision (27.3%) are the most frequent, while substitution (14.3%), lenition (6.5%), assimilation (5.2%), and linking (1.3%) occur less frequently but appear consistently across all five songs. These findings show that phonological simplification in Aespa's English singing is systematic rather than random, shaped by both the natural tendencies of English connected speech and the influence of Korean phonological patterns. This study contributes an empirical account of how English is phonologically adapted within a K-pop performance context.

Abstract

This study develops English learning materials tailored for Air Transportation Management students at Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Kedirgantaraan (STTKD) Yogyakarta using the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) within the framework of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Motivated by findings of low English proficiency among students, the research adopts the Research and Development (R&D) method following the ASSURE model: Analyze Learners, State Objectives, Select Methods, Utilize Media, Require Learner Participation, and Evaluate and Revise. Needs analysis identified a lack of aviation-specific vocabulary, difficulty in understanding professional registers, and a preference for engaging multimedia resouraces. The resulting product consists of six chapters—Pre-flight, Welcoming Passengers, In-flight, Food and Drinks, Handling Complaints, and Landing Preparation—each integrating GBA stages: Building Knowledge of the Field, Modelling the Text, Joint Construction of the Text, and Independent Construction of the Text. Expert validation and classroom trials confirmed the materials’ validity, relevance, and applicability. The findings indicate that GBA effectively bridges classroom learning with authentic aviation communication contexts, enhancing both language competence and confidence. The study recommends broader implementation of these materials in aviation-focused institutions and inclusion of industry practitioner feedback for further refinement. It is hoped that the teachers can use and promote this approach in teaching English to air transport management students or aviation students in general.

Abstract

Constraints and guidelines on subtitle translation impose demanding tasks on machine translation systems, hence the urge to control translation output from machine translators. Unlike conventional machine translation, text-generating artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT can produce controlled translations that satisfy subtitle translation guidelines. Thus, this study aims to maintain the quality of subtitle translation while limiting character length to keep subtitles compact. The study employed a descriptive-comparative analysis to examine the differences between a plain prompt and a properly designed prompt. The prompts used in this study included details such as contextual information, target audience specifications, formal language requirements, character-length limitations, prohibition on altering sentence order, and illustrative examples. This study utilized 50 subtitle segments from the film Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) and implemented four prompt types: Plain Prompt, Zero-Shot Prompt, One-Shot Prompt, and Few-Shot Prompt. Translation quality was measured using COMET, BERTScore, and chrF++. Scores from these metrics showed improvement, with the Few-Shot Prompt reaching 89.920, 88.830, and 59.904, respectively, while the Plain Prompt yielded only 89.000, 85.806, and 55.767. The findings also revealed a reduction in character count, with the Plain Prompt generating 1,834 characters and the Few-Shot Prompt generating 1,377. These results indicate that the Few-Shot Prompt produces higher-quality translations and maintains greater compactness compared to the Plain Prompt.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the progress achieved by participants in a TOEFL preparation program, as reflected in their TOEFL pre-test and post-test scores. The participants attended 24 TOEFL preparation sessions, and their performance before and after completing the program was compared to evaluate the program's effectiveness. The participants of this study consisted of university lecturers from one of the public universities in Indonesia, coming from different disciplines. This study employed a quantitative experimental design. The data were taken from the pre-test and post-test at the beginning and end of the TOEFL preparation program. The pretest and posttest data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test. The findings reveal that although some participants showed individual score fluctuations across the skills, the overall results did not indicate statistically significant improvement in TOEFL performances. The paired sample t-test showed that the p-value of .537 is greater than the conventional significance level of α=0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis failed to be rejected. It can be concluded that the TOEFL preparation for lecturers at a university in North Maluku did not result in a statistically significant improvement in their overall TOEFL scores.

Abstract

This study investigates the representation of the Cisarua landslide in news media through corpus-assisted transitivity analysis within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. It focuses on identifying the dominant processes, participants, and circumstances employed in the news reports to construct disaster representations. A qualitative approach using discourse analysis was employed in this study. The data consisted of news reports about the Cisarua landslide published in The Jakarta Post from 25 to 31 January 2026. The collected news texts were compiled into a corpus consisting of 5,601 words and analyzed using UAM CorpusTool. The analysis involved clause segmentation, transitivity annotation, frequency calculation, and concordance or Key Word in Context analysis. The findings identified 1,799 transitivity elements, comprising participants, processes, and circumstances. Participants were the most frequent category with 921 occurrences (51.2%), followed by processes with 578 occurrences (32.1%), and circumstances with 300 occurrences (16.7%). The analysis also revealed the dominance of several participant roles and process types in the corpus. Material processes appeared most frequently with 339 occurrences (18.8%), while relational and verbal processes were also commonly identified in the news reports. Among the participant roles, Goal was the most frequent (28.7%), followed by Actor (18%), indicating that the reports foregrounded affected entities and highlighted the actions of agents. In addition, location circumstances were the most dominant circumstance category, with 207 occurrences (11.5%). The findings show that the disaster news reports primarily emphasized disaster events, institutional responses, affected entities, and landslide-related contextual information.
