Abstract

Abstract

Public speaking competence is needed in various interactions between people, both in personal and social contexts, including leadership, business, religion, law, education, and others. In the field of education, for example, the need for public speaking skills especially for students is very necessary. The ability to speak in public is very helpful in increasing students' self-confidence which can support their performance both in education and social life. This ability is not only to encourage students to excel in the academic field within their school, but also to excel in other fields outside of school. As an implementation in helping to improve students' public speaking skills, the FISIP USU service team has carried out public speaking training service activities in one of the schools in Medan City, namely SMA Al Washliyah 1 in September 2023. The service team provided provision for students to be more capable of communicating in front of the public. Participants received public speaking materials and some of them practiced public speaking directly in a competition. This service activity is a form of contribution to the implementation of the fourth point of Sustainable Development Goals, namely Quality Education.

Abstract

Inequality in the treatment of victims of sexual violence can be seen in those who do not have friends who talk about feelings of confusion, fear, and a lack of knowledge about what to do after an act of sexual violence occurs. This research discusses the communication activities of companions at Nurani Perempuan with victims of sexual violence in West Sumatra. This research aims to analyze communication activities by Nurani Perempuan Women’s Crisis Center as a companion to victims of sexual violence in West Sumatra. This research uses a case study research approach with research data collection methods by conducting observations, in-depth interviews with companions of victims of sexual violence at Nurani Perempuan, and documentation. The research results show that communication between one victim and another victim is very unique. In order to achieve good communication, the companion must be able to build the victim's trust so that they want to talk about their case. So that the companion who is initially active in asking questions will become a listener to the victim's story until the mentoring process is complete and the victim begins to improve.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The rapid development of news media due to technology in Indonesia indicates the presence of panopticon practices within it. Therefore, this research aims to delve deeper into how the panopticon practice exists in media reporting and to find out whether every individual in society is actually monitored or free in their life due to this practice. This research is a descriptive qualitative study with literature review and digital observation as data collection methods. This research shows that out of the three news articles used as examples of panopticon practices in the media, two of them explain that every behavior and action of individuals in society will always be monitored, even in trivial private matters. Meanwhile, the remaining one explains that the media practices the panoptic method by instilling discipline through widespread reporting to the public regarding the behavior of individuals who oppose or do not conform to the system. The author concludes that the panoptic practice in the media shows constant surveillance of individuals in society, so individuals are actually not free and will always be monitored by news media. Abstract

This study aims to identify the patterns of interpersonal communication between parents and children contained in the Qur'an, specifically in Surah Ash-Shaffat verse 102 and Surah Luqman verses 16-19, and to analyze them through the perspective of Tafsir Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. Primary data was obtained from the Tafsir Al-Azhar book, while secondary data came from relevant books and journals. The findings indicate that both verses contain principles of effective interpersonal communication, namely: (1) Equality and Openness, as seen in the dialogue between Prophet Ibrahim and Ismail; (2) Empathy, reflected in Ismail's response; and (3) Positiveness, elaborated through Luqman's advice. This communication pattern is manifested in concrete behaviors such as appropriate diction, treating the child as a conversation partner, not turning one's face away, and not shouting. This research provides practical implications for parents in building harmonious communication with their children, which in turn can strengthen family resilience.
