Abstract

Environmental crises characterized by climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste have highlighted the urgent need for educational transformation to foster sustainable generations. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is considered a relevant approach for integration into primary science education because it connects scientific knowledge with environmental awareness and action. This study aimed to analyze the forms of implementation, impacts, and challenges of ESD integration in primary science learning. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Data were obtained from the Scopus database between 2016 and 2026 using keywords related to ESD, science education, and elementary school. Through the screening process, 11 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. The findings revealed that ESD was implemented through the integration of sustainability concepts into science lessons, outdoor learning, project-based learning, interdisciplinary approaches, sustainability-themed science stories, and the development of learning modules and digital platforms. The implementation of ESD positively influenced cognitive, affective, behavioral, and skills domains, including sustainability understanding, environmental awareness, pro-environmental behavior, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and reflective thinking. However, several challenges remain, including limited integration of sustainability content in curricula and teaching materials, gaps between students’ environmental attitudes and factual knowledge, and the need to strengthen teachers’ competencies. This study contributes a thematic synthesis demonstrating that ESD-based science learning in primary schools is most effective when implemented through contextual, participatory, and experiential learning approaches that promote students’ sustainability competencies. Keywords: Education for Sustainable Development, science learning, primary school, sustainability, environmental literacy

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the implementation of ecological literacy-based learning in improving students' critical thinking skills at State Senior High School 2 Peusangan. The research employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental design with a One-Group Pretest–Posttest Design. The sample consisted of 30 tenth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a critical thinking skills test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions administered during the pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed using the normality test, homogeneity test, and paired sample t-test. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the improvement in students' critical thinking skills was evaluated using the Normalized Gain (N-Gain). The results showed that the implementation of ecological literacy-based learning significantly improved students' critical thinking skills at State Senior High School 2 Peusangan. This finding was supported by the paired sample t-test results, which indicated that the calculated t-value (8.77) was greater than the critical t-value (1.67), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H₀) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (H₁). All aspects of critical thinking in ecology learning showed improvement, including reasoning with an N-Gain of 79.24% (high), analysis with 77.95% (high), inference with 74.07% (high), evaluation with 70.34% (high), and reflection with 60.12% (moderate). Therefore, the implementation of ecological literacy-based learning can serve as an alternative instructional approach to improve students' critical thinking skills in ecology learning. Keywords: Ecological literacy-based learning, critical thinking skills, State Senior High School 2 Peusangan

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively describe students' problem-solving profiles in the magnetic field concept and identify factors influencing students' difficulties in solving physics problems. The research employed a Sequential Explanatory Mixed Method involving 120 eleventh-grade students from two high schools in Garut Regency selected via stratified random sampling. Quantitative data were collected through validated problem-solving tests, while qualitative data were obtained through observations and in-depth interviews to explore thinking strategies and misconceptions. The results indicate that students' problem-solving skills are generally in the medium and low categories. Students demonstrated decent competence in the problem-understanding stage but faced significant obstacles in planning strategies, executing calculations, and evaluating results. Qualitative analysis reveals that students' primary difficulties stem from weak spatial visual representation skills difficulty converting 3D vector diagrams to 2D and fundamental misconceptions regarding magnetic field sources and the application of the right-hand rule. These findings underscore the importance of integrating innovative learning models such as multi-representation-based Problem Based Learning (PBL) and 3D virtual simulations to visualize abstract concepts, thereby reducing misconceptions and effectively enhancing students' problem-solving skills. Keywords: problem-solving skills, magnetic field, physics representation, misconceptions, mixed method.

Abstract

Student success in the learning process is strongly shaped by learning motivation, regarded as a crucial internal determinant. This study was conducted to reveal the extent to which learning motivation affects student learning outcomes in the Basic Concepts of Science I course at STAI Al-Munawwarah Tolitoli. An ex post facto design with a quantitative approach was employed. The population consisted of 102 students of the PGMI Study Program at STAI Al-Munawwarah Tolitoli, from whom 23 third-semester students were purposively selected as the sample. Learning motivation scores were collected via a questionnaire, while learning outcomes were measured using course grades. Data analysis techniques included classical assumption tests covering normality, linearity, heteroscedasticity, and autocorrelation. Hypothesis testing was subsequently carried out using simple linear regression in IBM SPSS Version 22. The results showed that the data met the assumptions of normality (Sig.). value of 0.083 > 0.05, linearity with a Sig. value of 0.002 < 0.05, heteroscedasticity with a point distribution forming no particular pattern, and autocorrelation with a Sig. value of 0.061 > 0.05. Simple linear regression analysis produced the equation Y = 14.825 + 1.898X with a significance value of 0.002 < 0.05, indicating that learning motivation has a positive and significant effect on student learning outcomes. The coefficient of determination (R Square) of 0.217 indicates that learning motivation accounts for 21.7% of learning outcomes, while the remaining 78.3% is explained by other factors beyond this study. Thus, learning motivation is an important factor that must be continuously strengthened to support student learning in the Basic Concepts of Science I course. Keywords: learning motivation, learning outcomes, science education, students

Abstract

Critical thinking skill is frequently the primary focus of physics education research, while its underlying foundation, critical thinking awareness, remains rarely examined, particularly among Senior High School students. This study aims to describe the profile of students' critical thinking awareness in physics learning, identify the most influential indicator, and examine differences based on gender. A quantitative descriptive method was employed involving 30 tenth-grade students (10 males and 20 females) at a Madrasah Aliyah in Garut Regency as respondents. Data were collected using a closed five-point Likert questionnaire measuring three indicators: beliefs and appreciation of logic, metacognitive caution, and academic self-efficacy. The instrument was valid (r = 0.69-0.87) and reliable (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.963). Results showed that students' mean critical thinking awareness score was 50.80 out of a maximum of 75 (67.7%), classified as moderate-to-high, with a relatively balanced profile across the three indicators (range 3.36-3.42). An independent samples t-test revealed a significant gender difference (t = -2.86; p = 0.008), with female students (M = 54.05) demonstrating higher critical thinking awareness than male students (M = 44.30), accompanied by a large effect size (Cohen's d = 1.11). These findings emphasize the need for physics teachers to design instructional strategies that build metacognitive awareness as a foundation prior to training higher-order critical thinking skills, while also attending to the gender gap in students' thinking dispositions. Keywords: critical thinking awareness, gender, metacognitive awareness, physics learning

Abstract

Scientific literacy is an essential competency in chemistry education; however, its development remains a significant challenge. One of the factors contributing to the low level of scientific literacy is the limited quality of teaching materials used in the learning process. This study aimed to develop and validate an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)-based e-module on the utilization of waste metal materials as electrodes for salt water batteries to support students' scientific literacy. The study employed the Design and Development Research (DDR) approach, focusing on Product and Tool Research, which consists of four stages: analysis, design, development, and evaluation. The participants included five chemistry teachers involved in the needs analysis stage, three validators (two university experts and one chemistry teacher), and nine twelfth-grade students from a public senior high school in Bandung City who were selected based on their academic achievement for the limited trial. The findings indicate that the developed e-module fulfills the characteristics of a high-quality e-module and meets the criteria for content, presentation, and language feasibility. Furthermore, the module integrates scientific literacy components with the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), thereby supporting contextual learning that is relevant to students' everyday lives. The validation results confirmed that the e-module is suitable for classroom implementation, with several recommendations for further refinement. The limited trial also demonstrated a positive improvement in students' scientific literacy profiles, with achievement levels ranging from 63% to 96%, which falls within the good category. These findings suggest that the developed ESD-based e-module has the potential to serve as an effective instructional resource for fostering scientific literacy in chemistry learning. Keywords: E-Module, ESD, salt water battery, science literacy
