Abstract

The use of digital modules in Natural Science (IPA) learning in junior high schools (SMP/MTs) in Jepara Regency is the focus of a comprehensive analysis to analyze the use of digital modules focusing on usage patterns, level of effectiveness, and implementation constraints. This study aims to provide a holistic picture of the contribution of digital modules to the quality of science learning through student perceptions. A descriptive quantitative method was applied by distributing structured questionnaires to 100 students from several schools. Descriptive statistical analysis and data triangulation were used to validate the findings. The results showed an intensive usage pattern, integrating independent access outside the classroom with structured use in the classroom, supported by interactive features that increase engagement and conceptual understanding. Digital modules proved effective in terms of ease of navigation, material relevance, and flexibility of learning time. However, their implementation is still hampered by internet network instability, limited student devices, and low teacher digital competency. The conclusion of this study states that digital modules are an adaptive and effective medium, with recommendations for strengthening infrastructure, equalizing access, and ongoing training for educators and students.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Pembelajaran IPA di sekolah menengah umumnya masih menggunakan pendekatan konvensional yang belum optimal dalam memfasilitasi pemahaman siswa terhadap konsep yang bersifat abstrak dalam materi tersebut. Kondisi ini menuntut inovasi media pembelajaran yang interaktif dan berbasis teknologi. Penelitian ini difokuskan pada pengembangan media pembelajaran interaktif IPA berbasis proyek dengan bantuan perangkat lunak Adobe Animate. Penelitian ini juga bertujuan menilai kelayakan serta tingkat kepraktisan media pembelajaran berdasarkan penilaian ahli dan pengalaman pengguna (siswa). Subjek penelitian terdiri atas siswa kelas VIII SMPN 2 Montong Gading sebanyak 24 orang. Teknik pengumpulan data meliputi angket, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini meliputi pedoman wawancara, lembar validasi dari ahli media dan materi, serta kuesioner untuk mengukur respon siswa. Teknik analisis data yang diterapkan dalam penelitian ini yaitu analisis deskriptif kuantitatif dengan menghitung persentase skor kelayakan dan kepraktisan, yang selanjutnya diinterpretasikan berdasarkan kategori yang telah ditetapkan. Hasil penelitian mengungkap bahwa media yang dirancang mendapatkan rata-rata validasi dari ahli media sebesar 90,25% dan dari ahli materi sebesar 92%, yang keduanya dikategorikan sangat layak. Selain itu, tingkat kepraktisan berdasarkan respon siswa mencapai 83%, sehingga termasuk dalam kategori sangat praktis. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa media berbasis Adobe Animate dengan pendekatan proyek dapat menjadi alternatif inovatif untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran IPA yang lebih interaktif, aplikatif, dan sesuai tuntutan abad ke-21. Abstract

The era of disruption that requires 21st-century skills as a provision in facing real-world challenges, including the world of work and the demands of global society, is the main background of this research. The 21st-century skills in question refer to the 6C competencies (citizenship, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication). The main objectives of this study are to map the relationship between STEM-PjBL in physics learning with the 6C competency, find research gaps based on the mapping, and provide recommendations for educators related to 21st-century skills-oriented learning. Therefore, this study is included in the category of literature studies using bibliometric analysis assisted by the VOSViewer application. The articles related to the keywords STEM-PjBL and the 6C competencies were compiled through the Scopus and Google Scholar databases with the help of the Publish or Perish application. The pattern generated from 968 data shows that the trend of research on STEM-PjBL in the period 2015-2025 tends to increase. In addition, the network visualization pattern also shows that STEM-PjBL is related to the 6C competencies, but it is still an area that is rarely studied. VOSViewer's items don't include character and citizenship as part of the 6C competency. This means that this is a novelty of research and a challenge for future research on how to holistically practice 6C competencies in learning. Project-based learning with a STEM approach is recommended as a tool to train 6C competencies, or 21st-century skills, as the findings of various studies show that STEM-PjBL has a multidimensional impact on learning.Keywords: 6Cs Competency, 21st-century skills, PjBL, STEM

Abstract

This research has a high urgency due to the increasing trend of technology use so that higher education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) is becoming increasingly important. The STEAM-based Project Based Learning (PjBL) model supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers an innovative approach. In addition, the urgency of implementing this model lies in the need to prepare teachers to have digital competencies in facing real-world challenges. This study aims to identify obstacles faced by teachers in implementing the STEAM-based PjBL model assisted by AI in science learning in North Aceh. This study uses a qualitative approach with the Case Study Method, data in this study were collected through in-depth interviews with teachers and students, direct observation during the learning process, and analysis of curriculum documents and educational policies. The results of the study indicate that there are several obstacles, such as teachers' lack of understanding of the PjBL and STEAM models, limited technological facilities, and student resistance in adapting to project-based learning. The results show that teachers' low understanding of the PjBL and STEAM models, limited technological facilities, and student resistance indicate that the implementation of learning is not fully student-oriented (student-centered). The use of AI has the potential to support learning through data analysis, feedback, and individualized material adjustments. However, the teacher's role remains crucial in developing students' creativity, empathy, and critical thinking skills. This research is expected to provide recommendations for improving the effectiveness of the STEAM-based PjBL model in North Aceh.Keywords: AI, project-based learning, STEAM

Abstract

Local wisdom based science learning has emerged as an approach that effectively connects scientific concepts with cultural experiences familiar to students' daily lives. This article aims to examine the effectiveness of integrating local wisdom in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills through a literature review of 25 studies published between 2015 and 2025. The review analyzes various learning media, instructional models, and teaching materials grounded in local cultural contexts across different educational levels. The findings reveal that local wisdom plays a significant role in improving the relevance and comprehension of science concepts while fostering higher-order thinking skills, including analyzing, evaluating, and drawing conclusions. Learning activities linked to cultural practices increase students’ cognitive engagement because the content becomes more meaningful and easier to relate to real-life experiences. The novelty of this article lies in its comprehensive cross-level synthesis, demonstrating that local wisdom not only enhances critical thinking at a single grade level but also contributes progressively from elementary to senior high school. This article contributes to strengthening the theoretical foundation of cultural integration in science learning and provides practical insights for teachers to design contextual and meaningful instruction.Keywords: critical thinking, ethnoscience, LKPD, local wisdom, science education

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the integration of critical thinking indicators in a technology-based animated video entitled Changes in the Form of Things on the topic of changes in the states of matter. The research employed a qualitative approach using content analysis as the primary method. The analytical framework was based on Robert H. Ennis’s critical thinking indicators, which include problem clarification, assessment of evidence, inference, and reasoning. The data consisted of narrative structure, visual representations, empirical examples, and patterns of argumentation presented in the video. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, indicator categorization, and cognitive interpretation of how each indicator was represented within the content structure. The findings reveal that all four critical thinking indicators are present in the video; however, they appear in basic and implicit forms. The indicators of problem clarification and inference are the most dominant, reflected in the presentation of definitions, conceptual classifications, and explicit cause–effect explanations delivered by the narrator. Meanwhile, the indicators of assessment of evidence and reasoning appear in simpler forms, primarily limited to illustrative examples and linear causal relationships without exploration of alternative variables or critical evaluation. Structurally, critical thinking is more often presented as an outcome of information delivery than as a reflective cognitive process that actively engages learners. These findings indicate that the video is effective in supporting basic conceptual understanding but has not yet optimally stimulated higher-order thinking skills. Therefore, strengthening instructional design through problem-based or inquiry-based approaches is necessary so that technology-based learning media function not only as tools for knowledge transmission but also as facilitators for the comprehensive development of critical thinking skills.Keywords: Animated, critical thinking, change, Ennis, thinking

Abstract

Students' creative thinking skills remain relatively low due to teacher-centered instruction and the limited use of interactive, innovative teaching materials in science learning. This study aims to analyze improvements in students' creative thinking skills through the use of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)-based flipbook on bioplastics. The study used a quantitative, pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest. The research sample consisted of 30 ninth-grade students from a junior high school in Garut Regency, selected purposively. The instrument used was an essay test measuring creative thinking skills across four indicators: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, the Wilcoxon test, and the N-Gain test. The results showed an increase in students' creative thinking skills, indicated by an average pretest score of 39.22, which increased to 77.42 in the posttest. The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a difference between the pre- and post-treatment groups. The N-Gain values ​​for all indicators were in the moderate category, with the highest increase in the flexibility indicator (0.69) and the lowest in elaboration (0.58). These N-Gain results indicate that STEM-based flipbooks on bioplastics can help students develop ideas, explore various solutions, and link concepts to contextual problems. This research has the potential to improve junior high school students' creative thinking skills.Keywords: bioplastics, creative thinking, flipbook, STEM

Abstract

Assessment literacy is a fundamental competency for preservice teachers, yet the Assessment in Science course still lacked structured learning materials that could support both classroom learning and independent study. This study aimed to develop a digital handout for the course and examine its practicality based on students’ evaluations. This study employed a Research and Development design using the ADDIE model, which involved the phases of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Participants included 28 undergraduate science education students as target users, three students for readability testing, and one science education and assessment expert for qualitative validation. Data were collected through questionnaires consisting of Likert scale items and open-ended questions. The data were further analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The development process produced a digital handout containing learning objectives, concise theoretical explanations, practical examples, summaries, self-assessment questions, and interactive multimedia elements such as hyperlinks and QR codes. The practicality evaluation showed that the handout was rated practical overall (M = 4.17; SD = 0.82), with its strongest contributions in supporting concept understanding, classroom learning, and future review, although improvements are still needed in visual quality and layout spacing. In conclusion, the digital handout can be a practical learning resource for the Assessment in Science course. The findings imply that systematically developed digital materials can support assessment literacy in preservice science teacher education.Keywords: ADDIE model, assessment literacy, digital handout, preservice science teacher, science teacher education

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is motivated by the demands of 21st century education which requires a paradigm shift from mere mastery of material to the development of scientific literacy and higher-order thinking, especially in Islamic-based educational institutions such as Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) which need to align science with spiritual values. This research aims to describe the picture of students' scientific and Islamic literacy before and after learning, analyze the influence of the Socio-Scientific Issue (SSI) approach, and test the effectiveness of the approach on the material of additives and addictive substances in class VIII MTsN 1 Lumajang. The purpose of this research is to determine: (1) the picture of students' scientific literacy and Islamic literacy before learning, (2) the picture of students' scientific literacy and Islamic literacy after learning, (3) the effect of the Socio-Scientific Issue (SSI) approach on students' scientific literacy and Islamic literacy, and (4) the effectiveness of applying the SSI approach in science learning. The research method used is a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a Non-equivalent Control Group Design. The research population included all 306 students of class VIII MTsN 1 Lumajang, with samples taken through purposive sampling technique, namely class VIII C as the experimental class and class VIII D as the control class, each consisting of 30 students. The data collection instrument was a multiple-choice test (pretest and posttest), and was supported by interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis techniques involved descriptive analysis, prerequisite tests (normality and homogeneity), hypothesis testing, and N-Gain tests. The results of the study showed that: (1) the initial abilities of students' scientific literacy and Islamic literacy before learning were in the moderate category with an average pretest score of 72 in the experimental class and the control class; (2) after learning, there was an increase in students' abilities, indicated by an average posttest of 88.17 in the experimental class and 78.33 in the control class; (3) there is a significant influence of the application of the Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) approach on students' scientific literacy and Islamic literacy, which is proven through an independent sample t-test with a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05) and (4) the application of the SSI approach is quite effective in improving student learning outcomes, which is shown by the N-Gain value of 0.6095 in the moderate category. Abstract

The ability of prospective teacher students to develop science learning media that are innovative, contextual, and integrated with environmental issues still needs attention because the media developed are often not able to connect science concepts with real environmental problems around students. This study aimed to analyze the ability of students of the Elementary School Teacher Education Program at STKIP Majenang in developing environment-based science flap books for elementary schools. The research employed a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The research subjects consisted of sixth-semester students from classes A and B who were enrolled in the Elementary Science Learning course, totaling 77 students. The research instruments included a flap book assessment rubric, student ability questionnaires, and interview guidelines. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive quantitative analysis through score calculation, mean scores, and percentage achievement of student abilities. The results showed that the students’ ability in developing environment-based science flap books was categorized as very good. In the product assessment, class A obtained an average percentage of 82.25%, while class B achieved 82.31%. Meanwhile, the questionnaire results indicated an average percentage of 82.92% for class A and 83.52% for class B. The visual creativity aspect achieved the highest score, whereas the environmental integration aspect obtained the lowest score although it still fell into the good category. Interview results revealed that flap books were able to enhance students’ creativity in developing attractive and interactive learning media. However, students still experienced difficulties in integrating environmental issues into science materials contextually. This study indicates that the development of environment-based flap books can serve as an effective learning alternative to improve the readiness of prospective elementary school teachers in developing innovative, creative, and contextual science learning media.Keywords: Environment, flap book, science learning media, student abilities
