Abstract

Academic procrastination is frequently observed among college students, especially those juggling multiple roles, including work and child-rearing. The demands of educational, professional, and familial duties can significantly hinder their capacity to finish assignments punctually. This study follows the Temporal Motivation Theory (Steel, 2007) and employs a unique case study methodology, focusing on two individuals from Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo (UMSIDA). The selection of participants was carried out using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and observations where the researchers did not take part, followed by analysis using the thematic approach outlined by Miles and Huberman. The results identify three primary reasons for procrastination: (1) a lack of belief in achieving success due to exhaustion, (2) a reduced perceived importance of academic tasks in comparison to work or family responsibilities, and; (3) a loose interpretation of deadlines. The study concludes that procrastination in academia acts as a way to cope with conflicting roles and helps in preserving mental balance

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of online game addiction among adolescents has become a serious concern due to its negative impact on students’ academic balance and mental health. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of information services in improving students’ understanding of the risks associated with online gaming at SMA Negeri 1 Kejuruan Muda, Aceh Tamiang. A quantitative experimental approach was employed using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants consisted of 144 students selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and systematic observations. The questionnaire was administered in three stages: an initial survey to identify students’ involvement in online gaming, a pretest to assess their baseline understanding of online gaming risks, and a posttest to measure changes in understanding following the implementation of the information service. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ understanding of the dangers of online gaming after receiving the information service. Comparisons between pretest and posttest scores demonstrated increased awareness of the negative consequences of online gaming, including addiction, health problems, declining academic performance, and changes in social behavior. Observational findings further revealed higher student engagement and improved self-regulation in managing gaming time. These findings confirm that information services are an effective strategy for enhancing students’ understanding of online game hazards and should be integrated into school guidance and counseling programs.

Abstract

Developing procedural understanding of group counseling practices is a critical objective in counselor education, as effective counseling requires not only conceptual knowledge but also the ability to implement counseling procedures accurately and systematically. However, many counseling students experience difficulties translating theoretical knowledge into procedural practice. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of video-based learning in enhancing counseling students’ procedural understanding of group counseling practices. Using a quantitative experimental approach with a one-group pretest–posttest design, the study involved 36 undergraduate counseling students enrolled in a guidance and counseling program at a public university. Students’ procedural understanding was measured before and after the implementation of a video-based learning intervention that demonstrated the stages and procedures of group counseling. Descriptive analyses indicated substantial increases in mean scores and positive shifts in procedural understanding categories following the intervention. Inferential analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test revealed a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (Z = −3.48, p < .001). The findings indicate that video-based learning effectively enhances counseling students’ procedural understanding of group counseling practices. This study contributes to the counselor education literature by providing empirical evidence supporting video-based learning as a pedagogical strategy for teaching procedural aspects of group counseling and highlights its potential to bridge the gap between theory and practice in counselor training.
