Abstract

The phenomenon of single-parent families has been increasing globally and has a significant impact on children’s emotional development, particularly within the socio-cultural context of rural Indonesian communities. This study aims to analyze the emotional development of children in single-parent families, identify the influencing factors, and examine the challenges faced in the parenting process. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The population consisted of single-parent families in Kotangan Village, Galang District, Deli Serdang Regency, with three families selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included interview guidelines, observation sheets, and documentation checklists. The procedure involved in-depth interviews, direct observations, and data triangulation to ensure validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which comprised data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that children’s emotional development in single-parent families was influenced by parenting patterns, the psychological condition of mothers, social support, and religious values. The study concludes that religiosity and social environment function as protective factors that foster emotional stability among children in single-parent households. The findings have theoretical and practical implications for developing culturally and spiritually based family support programs. Future studies are recommended to expand the scope and sample diversity to achieve broader generalization.

Abstract

This study aims to explore in depth the role of the family in the social and emotional development of adolescents from broken homes in Seulalah Baru Village, Langsa City. The increasing prevalence of family disharmony and parental divorce has generated significant psychosocial impacts on adolescent well-being. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design, allowing the researcher to examine adolescents’ subjective experiences and family interaction dynamics within their sociocultural context. The participants consisted of three broken-home families selected through a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that adolescents’ social and emotional development in broken-home families is influenced by parenting patterns, communication quality, emotional support, religious values, and social environment. The study identifies family religiosity and community support as protective factors that mitigate emotional instability and maladaptive behavior among adolescents. The results further emphasize that the quality of emotional relationships and family communication is more crucial to adolescents’ socio-emotional well-being than the structural completeness of the family itself. Theoretically, this study strengthens Bandura’s social learning theory and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory. Practically, it provides a foundation for developing family support programs rooted in cultural and spiritual values, contributing to more holistic and contextually relevant interventions for adolescents from broken-home families.

Abstract

The phenomenon of pornography exposure among junior and senior high school students has become an increasingly serious concern in the educational context. This study aims to examine the role of guidance and counseling (BK) teachers in addressing and mitigating pornography-related problems in schools. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed in this research. The study involved five guidance and counseling teachers selected purposively from various educational levels in Medan City, including junior high school (SMP), Islamic junior high school (MTs), senior high school (SMA), Islamic senior high school (MA), and vocational high school (SMK). The findings indicate that BK teachers employ diverse counseling techniques, with individual counseling being the most commonly used method. The preventive and remedial efforts undertaken by BK teachers include conducting psychoeducational programs, engaging in parent-teacher collaboration, and establishing partnerships with relevant stakeholders. However, the study also highlights several challenges, particularly the lack of parental supervision and cooperation, which hinders the effectiveness of counseling interventions. These results emphasize the need for strengthening family-school collaboration and developing comprehensive strategies for preventing pornography exposure among adolescents in educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between locus of control and fear of missing out (FoMO) among K-Pop fans (K-Popers) on social media. The research employed a quantitative correlational design with 200 participants, selected through a convenience sampling technique. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test to identify the association between the two variables. The findings reveal that the dominant dimension of locus of control among participants was the external-chance factor, while the primary component influencing FoMO was anxiety. Furthermore, the analysis indicated a significant positive correlation between locus of control and FoMO, with a weak correlation strength of 19.6%. This suggests that the higher the external locus of control, the higher the level of FoMO experienced by K-Pop fans on social media. The results also indicate that individuals who are more externally oriented in their locus of control tend to depend on external validation and connection, which in turn fosters FoMO-related behaviors. This study contributes to the understanding of how personality factors influence digital behavior in fan communities, providing a psychological perspective on social media engagement among K-Pop fans.

Abstract

The phenomenon of religious conversion driven by marriage is increasingly prevalent among adolescents and young adults. This issue is often influenced by several factors, including cultural attachment, environmental pressure, and parental preoccupation with work, which limits open communication and supervision of their children. However, the lack of consistent religious guidance from parents during childhood and adolescence emerges as a dominant factor influencing religious conversion for marital reasons. This study aims to explore how Karo Muslim families instill marital values in their adolescent children and to understand the role of religious guidance in shaping these values. The research employed a qualitative approach using observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. Participants included five Karo Muslim families with adolescent children, the Head of the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA), and religious leaders. The findings indicate that marital values are instilled by parents as children reach adolescence (baligh). Religious guidance is conveyed through advice, exemplary behavior, and parental supervision. However, the effectiveness of such guidance is often hindered by limited parental religious knowledge, strong adherence to cultural traditions, work-related busyness, and environmental influences. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the intersection of family, religion, and culture in shaping adolescents’ perceptions of marriage and underscores the importance of continuous religious education within Muslim families.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the function of Shalat Dhuha (mid-morning prayer) in reducing anxiety among final-year students in the Islamic Guidance and Counseling Program. The phenomenon of academic anxiety, intensified by thesis-related pressure and social expectations, was examined through a phenomenological approach to capture students’ lived spiritual and psychological experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observations, and reflective documentation, involving six purposively selected participants. Thematic analysis identified three main forms of anxiety, psychological, physiological, and socio-moral, each interlinked within students’ academic and spiritual lives. Findings revealed that consistent performance of Shalat Dhuha fosters emotional balance, self-regulation, and spiritual awareness, functioning as an effective religious coping mechanism. The prayer cultivates calmness, gratitude, and tawakkul (trustful surrender), aligning with the principles of Islamic psychology and mindfulness-based therapy. The study contributes to the theoretical development of Islamic Guidance and Counseling, bridging spiritual practice with modern psychological frameworks. Practically, it proposes the integration of structured Shalat Dhuha-based counseling within higher education as a holistic model for addressing student anxiety and enhancing well-being.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of career guidance in enhancing pre-employment mental readiness among orphans at the Muhammadiyah Boys’ Orphanage, Medan Branch. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach using a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving caregivers, career mentors, and active foster participants in the program. The findings revealed that Islamic value–integrated career guidance significantly improved self-confidence, independence, and mental preparedness for work transition. Three key themes emerged: (1) implementation of Islamic character-based career programs, (2) enhancement of mental readiness and career orientation, and (3) mentoring strategies to overcome emotional and social challenges among orphans. These results highlight the importance of a holistic, spirituality-based approach in expanding both theoretical understanding and practical applications of Islamic career counseling within faith-based social institutions
