Abstract

Low levels of assertiveness, openness, and empathy among secondary school students frequently constitute a major obstacle to building healthy social relationships, which in turn undermines their academic achievement. This concern underlies the importance of Guidance and Counseling (GC) interventions that move beyond mere instruction toward direct experiential engagement. This study examines the extent to which group guidance services using the role playing technique can enhance students’ Interpersonal Communication (IC), drawing on DeVito’s comprehensive theoretical framework. Using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, the study involved eight Class X students from SMP Taman Pendidikan Islam Medan, selected through purposive sampling from a pool of 28 students based on the lowest IC scores. Four intervention sessions focused on social simulation and progressive training of IC indicators. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used to test the hypothesis, and the results showed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (Z = -2.524; p = 0.012), confirming the effectiveness of the service. The group’s mean IC score rose from 59.25 to 95.25, shifting from the Medium to the High category. All students (100%) who had initially fallen into the Low or Medium categories successfully reached the highest level of interpersonal communication following the intervention.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of school environment management and family environment on students’ morality at UPT SMP Negeri 24 Medan, both partially and simultaneously. This study employed a quantitative approach with a causal-comparative (ex-post facto) design. The population consisted of 942 students, while the sample comprised 281 students selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires using a four-point Likert scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics, prerequisite tests, multiple linear regression, t-test, F-test, and coefficient of determination with the assistance of SPSS version 26. The results showed that school environment management had a positive and significant effect on students’ morality, with a regression coefficient of 0.300, t-count of 5.718, and significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. Family environment also had a positive and significant effect on students’ morality, with a regression coefficient of 0.400, t-count of 7.672, and significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. Simultaneously, school environment management and family environment significantly affected students’ morality, as indicated by an F-count of 388.246 with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. The coefficient of determination (R²) was 0.736, indicating that the two independent variables jointly explained 73.6% of the variation in students’ morality, while the remaining 26.4% was explained by other factors outside the research model. Family environment was the more dominant variable, with a standardized beta coefficient of 0.506 compared with 0.377 for school environment management. These findings indicate that strengthening school management and creating a supportive family environment are important factors in improving students’ morality.

Abstract

Computational thinking in early childhood needs to be developed through concrete experiences, play, and contexts that are close to children’s lives. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of Center-Based Learning based on the traditional game Mpa’a Ncimi Lombo Tembe to improve computational thinking among children aged 4–6 years and examine changes in decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design. The quantitative phase used a quasi-experimental pretest-post test control group design involving 20 children, consisting of 10 children in the experimental group and 10 in the control group. Data was collected through performance tasks and observations of 16 computational thinking behaviors, while qualitative data came from observations, teacher interviews, and documentation. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, gain-score comparison, and analysis of covariance, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically and integrated with the quantitative findings. The results showed that the experimental group’s mean score increased from 36.70 to 54.30, whereas the control group increased from 31.70 to 42.80. The difference in improvement between groups was statistically significant, t(18) = 5.845, p < 0.001, with a very large effect size, Cohen’s d = 2.61. All four components and all 16 observed behaviors improved, with the largest increase occurring in abstraction. Learning implementation reached 95.00%. These findings indicate that this traditional game can support culturally situated unplugged learning for developing computational thinking through concrete, active, and meaningful experiences.

Abstract

The integration of digital media into language learning has created new opportunities to develop students’ writing skills and digital literacy. This study investigates the role of film-based learning in Indonesian language instruction by examining the relationships among digital literacy, student competence, student learning agility, and student engagement in writing activities. A quantitative survey design was employed involving 222 Grade XII students at SMA Negeri 2 Kota Jambi, Indonesia. Data were collected through a 19-item questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The measurement model demonstrated satisfactory reliability and convergent validity, with composite reliability values above 0.84 and average variance extracted values above 0.53. The structural model showed that digital literacy significantly and positively influenced student learning agility (β = 0.502, p < 0.001) and student engagement (β = 0.397, p < 0.001). Student competence also significantly influenced learning agility (β = 0.248, p = 0.002), while its direct effect on student engagement was not significant (β = 0.023, p = 0.787). Learning agility significantly enhanced student engagement (β = 0.471, p < 0.001). The model explained 48.4% of the variance in learning agility and 65.5% of the variance in student engagement. These findings indicate that film-based learning can provide a meaningful context for strengthening students’ digital literacy and learning agility, which in turn support greater engagement in writing-related learning activities. The study suggests that teachers should integrate film analysis, reflective writing, and collaborative digital activities to create contextual, interactive, and student-centered writing instruction aligned with 21st-century learning demands.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has fundamentally changed the practice of science learning in elementary schools, especially through the use of learning videos as a medium to support the strengthening of science literacy. This study aims to map research trends, thematic structure, and direction of learning video development for science literacy, as well as identify the empirical conditions and needs of teachers in elementary school science learning. An integrative approach is used by combining a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on the PRISMA 2020 protocol and a quantitative survey. The literature for the period 2021–2025 was systematically selected based on relevance and indexation criteria, with 18 articles indexed in grades 1–3 designated as the study corpus. Meanwhile, the survey involved 70 elementary school teachers to identify the use practices and needs of learning video development. The mapping shows the trend of research towards the development of learning videos that are interactive, contextual, and oriented towards science literacy. The survey findings show that teachers need videos that not only present science concepts, but also facilitate students in observing phenomena, analyzing information, evaluating evidence, and solving problems. The study contributes by integrating literary and empirical evidence to provide a conceptual basis for the development of science learning videos that are more geared towards strengthening the science literacy of elementary school students.

Abstract

Reading comprehension and expository writing are the twin pillars of literacy that determine how far elementary students can learn from text, yet national and international assessments consistently place Indonesian learners well below expected levels. This study aimed to describe and analyze the initial profile of fifth-grade students' reading comprehension based on Barrett's taxonomy and their expository writing skills based on six assessment aspects, as an empirical foundation for designing literacy instruction that moves beyond literal reading. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed with 224 fifth-grade students from eight elementary schools in Purwakarta Regency, West Java, Indonesia, comprising public, private, and Islamic schools that had implemented the School Literacy Movement. Reading comprehension was measured using an eight-item essay test representing four levels of Barrett's taxonomy, while expository writing was assessed using a six-aspect analytic rubric. The data were analyzed descriptively through means, percentages, and category distributions. The findings show that reading comprehension reached a mean score of 47.8 on a 0 to 100 scale, classified in the poor category, with a declining pattern from literal comprehension (72.5%) to reorganization (56.3%), inferential (33.8%), and evaluative comprehension (28.8%). Expository writing reached a mean of 49.2, also in the poor category, with text structure (40.0%) and argumentation (37.5%) as the weakest aspects. A total of 78.1% of students were in the poor category for reading comprehension and 81.3% for expository writing, with no student reaching the very good category in either competency. These findings imply that literacy instruction in Indonesian elementary schools must shift from reading habits toward comprehension instruction that explicitly targets higher order thinking and provides modeling and guided practice of text structure and argumentation in expository writing.
