Abstract

The Korean Wave refers to South Korean popular culture (pop culture), which has expanded throughout Asia, Europe, and America. This Korean Wave is being propagated through the entertainment sector, including music, movies, dramas, cosmetic goods, food, and so on, and is also being aided by the increasing flow of globalization. The goal of this study is to discover what variables impact the behavior of certain UIN Ar-Raniry students who like the Korean Wave and how the conduct of some UIN Ar-Raniry students who are influenced by the Korean Wave is affected. This study employed a qualitative method, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The acquired data was then examined using data analysis software. Data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification were used to examine the obtained data. The findings revealed that the effect of friends, families, and South Korean dramas presented on Indonesian private television channels influenced certain UIN Ar-Raniry students' liking of the Korean Wave. Some UIN Ar-Raniry students who were impacted by the Korean Wave may be noticed in their open conduct, use of language, style of dress, make-up and skin care, eating and food etiquette, and usage of social media. Their restricted conduct, methods of thinking and envisioning, growing knowledge or understanding, and developing self-confidence all have a shape.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to learn more about how the Thaipusam Tamil Hindu festival is celebrated in Banda Aceh, as well as how the people of Banda Aceh feel about it. The Thaipussam ritual is a Hindu religious ceremony that the Tamil ethnic minority follows. This ceremony is performed as a thank you to Lord Murugan or Lord Subramanyam, who gives life with safety, tranquility, and prosperity. This rite is also performed as a penance and on the day when vows are paid. This study employed a qualitative approach, including observation, interviews, and documentation as tools. The acquired data was analyzed using techniques such as data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification. The findings of this study show that the Thaipusam ritual is not just a religious activity for the Tamil people of Banda Aceh, but also an ethnic identity. Despite being a minority, this tradition makes the Tamil ethnic group's existence in Banda Aceh known, ensuring that ordinary people are not disturbed by the celebration. The contact between Tamil Hindus and other religious communities has never been tense or contentious. They all live in peace and love, never interfering with or mocking one another's religious beliefs.

Abstract

Dom Jeurat ritual is a tradition performed by some Muslims in various regions in Indonesia, especially in Aceh. People finish reading the Qur'an by the grave for three days and three nights or seven days and seven nights according to the request of the family. This study aims to determine the process of the dom jeurat ritual, the response of religious leaders, the community, and the views of four imams of the school of thought regarding the ritual. In this study the authors used qualitative research methods. Collecting data in this study also through observation, interviews and documentation. The results showed that the dom jeurat ritual had been traditionally performed by earlier generations of the people of Lueng Ie Village since the time of their ancestors. However, no clear evidence was found by whom and in what year this activity was originally performed. There has never been strong evidence or written records regarding dom jeurat activities. From the views of the four imams of the sect and the responses of Tengku (local ulama) and the community in Lueng Ie Village regarding the activity of reciting the Koran at the cemetery, some allow it and some consider it is makruh. The main debate is not about whether or not to recite the Koran in the cemetery, but whether or not the prayers are religiously acceptable and could reach the corpse in the grave.

Abstract

Epistemologically, natural science occupies an important position in Islam. By studying them, the appreciation of the signs of Allah's creation becomes higher. On this basis, we find various names of Muslim scientists, especially engineering in Islam. The most important figures that we discuss this time, are not new names. At least, this figure is famous for his manuscripts that are still around today. In fact, they are proven to have inspired the emergence of various engineering sciences in the west. These figures have proved to be quite complex engineering on the engineering sciences of previous civilizations, including Greece, Egypt and Persia. Their work is a combination of Islamic appreciation of pre-Islamic civilization, along with the framework of Muslims at that time. This fact is not appreciated much except after the emergence of intensive studies on the history of science. Among the characters is Sabra, Sarton, to other historians of science. Some of them also translated the original work from Arabic. Some others make replicas of their findings. Among the most famous is the elephant clock. This article attempts to critically reveal matters related to the contributions of these three figures in Islamic engineering, as well as trace their general contribution to modern civilization.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the extent of Dutch intervention in destroying Aceh's sovereignty, and what efforts were attempted by Sultan Muhammad Daud Syah in restoring the sovereignty after his exile. The methods used are heuristics, critical interpretation, and historiography. The results showed that the Dutch violated the laws of war by kidnapping the two consorts and their children so that the Sultan would surrender. The contribution of Sultan Muhammad Daud Syah in his exile to restore Aceh's sovereignty was to provide financial support and hold communication with the fighters in the interior. In addition, he also asked for reinforcements from foreign powers (Japan) to expel the Dutch colonialists in Aceh.

Abstract

It is believed that Islam was first introduced to the Chăm community around the eleventh century. Despite vicissitudes of the Champa kingdom’s history, this religion has remained and thrived in Vietnam until today. Specifically, Islam can only be found in a part of the Chăm – an ethnic of minority. Currently, the population of the Islamic community has reached about 40,000 and been distributed unevenly in 12 provinces and cities from the Central region to the Southern region. Based on the analysis of data gathered from survey and fieldworks conducted during 2019-2020 across the country where the Muslim Chăm community present, this article presents an overview of the Islamic community in contemporary Vietnam. Main features generalized and analyzed here includes population, distribution, and relationships of the Muslim community with the broader society and with international partners. It also identifies emerging problems putting forwards for this community at the present. We would argue that recent and notable changes of the Muslim community have revealed its efforts of adaptation toward the current social context characterized by modernity, secularization, urbanization and world integration.

Abstract

Colonialism in Southeast Asia was marked by the response of local communities, especially farmers, in various forms of protest. The protests were rooted in problems with the economic system. The colonial rulers brought a different economic logic with a new mode of production for traditional farmers. In response to these protests, the colonial government was assisted by the presence of local elites. This article will describe peasant resistance in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines with the argument that although local elites were involved, they had different ways of dealing with resistance. In addition to the problems of the economic system, colonialism also brought modernity which had an impact on the disintegration of the social system.

Abstract

One of the 19th-century manuscripts written in Malay Arabic-Jawi that comprises the sufi knowledge is the Dawā’ul Qulūb manuscript. The primary concepts in the manuscript and the text modifications are the subjects of this study. Given that the manuscript contains multiple variant texts, the research strategy employs the philological method in conjunction with the foundational method approach. The two manuscripts used in this study, both of which were collections of the Aceh State Museum, were found after a search of the manuscripts turned up as many as four manuscript texts. The first manuscript, with inventory number 07.1430, was used as the basic manuscript, and the second, with inventory number 07.812, was used as a comparative text. Due of its higher quality and closer (older) age to the autograph text, text 07.1430 was picked. Nevertheless, moral illness and how to prevent it are the focus of this manuscript's main concept. According to the findings of this study, the Dawā’ul Qulūb manuscript, which contains Islamic teachings on sufism, contains two parts: first; corrected text with a critical edition, and second; knowing clearly and in detail the contents of the Dawā’ul Qulūb manuscript which contains Islamic teachings on the Sufism knowledge. Some of the sub-chapters contained in the manuscript include: immoral parts of body, immoral hearts, and obedient in the heart.

Abstract

One of the 19th-century Malay-language Arab-Jawi manuscripts that contains the fiqh knowledge is the Marba’ Fi Hukm An-Nikah manuscript. The aim behind this study and its goal are to learn more about the edited text and the manuscript's key concepts. Because comparing the texts is an objective process, the research methodology involves philological analysis. There were just two manuscript texts discovered after searching the document. The first manuscript, which serves as the basis for comparison, is in the Pedir Museum's collection and has the inventory number MS-PM-0489/2020. The second manuscript, which serves as the basis for comparison, is in the Aceh State Museum's collection and has the inventory number 07 809. The text MS-PM-0489/2020 was chosen since the quality is higher with intact pages. The four major schools of thought's perspectives (mazhab) on the rules governing marriage are the text's main focus. The results of this study reveal that two things are necessary: first, a text that has been edited and given a critical edition; and second, it is essential to fully comprehend the manuscript Marba' Fi Hukm An-Nikah, which contains Islamic teachings on the science of fiqh. The book contains writings on a wide range of subjects, including talaq, fasakh law, taqlid law, and marriage and all themes related to marriage.

Abstract

One of the parts of Banda Aceh's city that is near the seaside is Deah Glumpang village. This region was a part of Sagoe XXV during the reign of the Aceh Darussalam kingdom and had a separate political structure. Gampong Deah Glumpang is a fascinating region to explore since it has a high density of Aceh tombstones. Gampong Deah Glumpang is home to a variety of and quite densely decorated Aceh tombstones. The purpose of the research done in the village of Deah Glumpang is to describe the circumstances, identify the gravestones, and assess their distribution. The research method used is descriptive analysis with an inductive approach. Data collection techniques include assessments, surface surveys, interviews, and literature studies. After all these activities have been carried out, the data will be described and analyzed, which includes morphological, technological, stylistic, and contextual analysis. The results of the study found that the distribution of Acehnese tombstones in Gampong Deah Glumpang was spread over 11 points of the Aceh tombstone group. In total, there are 173 Aceh tombstones, 35 that have not been identified due to severe damage, and the remaining 131 that are identified by the shape of winged slabs, wingless slabs, winged square beams, octagonal inverted cones, and cylindrical inverted cones. According to Othman Yatim's periodization and comparison with the distribution of Acehnese tombstones in other areas in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, it was revealed that the distribution of Acehnese tombstones in Gampong Deah Glumpang originates from the XV-XIX century. Other findings are ceramics and the remains of old structures, so it is strongly suspected that apart from being an ancient burial area, it was also used as an ancient settlement around the burial site.
