Abstract

On the other hand, reading proficiency for SMP Nasional Karimbow students remains low. Students have certain challenges when it comes to developing their reading comprehension, particularly when it comes to understanding narrative texts. Students find it tedious to work with narrative texts because they find it hard to understand the content and come to their own conclusions about it. This study was carried out at SMP Nasional Karimbow, which is situated in North Sulawesi's East Motoling, South Minahasa District. The research was carried out in Mei 2023. The eighth grade students of SMP Nasional Karimbow participated in this study during the academic year 2022–2023. The researcher produced study instruments in the form of pre- test and post- test to tests students’ abilities before and after carrying out the treatment. The researcher employed testing in this study. Students take two different types of tests: a pre-test prior to CSR and a post-test following CSR. Studies conducted in the tenth grade at SMA Swadhama Werdhi Agung in 2022–2023 suggest that CSR could enhance reading comprehension. 46.25 was the pre-test score (X), and 81.42 was the post-test score (X). In the SMP Nasional Karimbow narrative text on reading comprehension, collaborative strategic reading is beneficial

Abstract

This study aims at analysing the story's portrayal of corruption. This study is a qualitative research, and this study employed an objective approach of M.H Abrams in analysing the data of corruption as seen in "The Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg". As the results, there are four types of corruption such as, Moral corruption is exemplified through the characters' susceptibility to greed and the erosion of their moral values when faced with the temptation of wealth. Ethics corruption is evident in the hypocrisy of Hadleyburg's residents, who, despite their outwardly virtuous appearances, succumb to deceitful practices when their integrity is challenged. Justice corruption is depicted in the manipulation of the town's justice system, emphasizing the ease with which corruption can infiltrate seemingly infallible institutions. Social corruption is explored through the ripple effect of dishonesty, showcasing how a single act of corruption can contaminate the entire social fabric of a community. In light of these findings, a fruitful avenue for further research on the themes of moral corruption, ethics corruption, justice corruption, and social corruption in "The Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg" could involve a comparative analysis with contemporary societal dynamics. Investigating how the depicted corrosive influences manifest in modern settings, exploring real-world instances of moral and ethical lapses, compromised justice systems, and social decay would provide insights into the enduring relevance of Mark Twain's narrative

Abstract

This study explores the representation of childhood in Roald Dahl's "The Big Friendly Giant" through the lens of Erik Erikson's psychosocial development theory, with a particular focus on the character of Sophie, an orphan who faces significant challenges. The research aims to analyze how Sophie's journey reflects key developmental stages, including trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, and industry vs. inferiority. Through her evolving relationship with the BFG and her proactive role in confronting the giants, Sophie transitions from a fearful, passive child to a confident, assertive individual. This transformation illustrates a positive representation of childhood, emphasizing the importance of nurturing environments and supportive relationships in child development. The findings highlight the critical role of literature in shaping societal perceptions of childhood and suggest that narratives like Dahl's can foster resilience and self-assurance in children. This study also underscores how Sophie's resilience embodies hope, courage, and adaptability, which are vital for healthy psychosocial development.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions of Instagram as a medium for English language learning, focusing on its role in enhancing engagement, creativity, and language skills. Conducted with English Education students from Universitas Negeri Manado, the research utilizes a quantitative approach and a closed-ended questionnaire, collecting data from 45 participants who actively use Instagram. The findings indicate that students perceive Instagram positively, noting its visually engaging and interactive platform as conducive to learning. Key benefits highlighted include increased engagement, enjoyment, and motivation, with Instagram’s multimedia and social features creating a dynamic environment where students feel more connected to peers and content. Additionally, Instagram is seen as a valuable tool for vocabulary acquisition and exposure to authentic English language use, particularly through real-world examples provided by native speakers and educational accounts. However, some limitations were identified, such as distractions inherent to the platform and a perceived lack of support for developing learning independence. Overall, the study suggests that Instagram holds significant potential as a supplementary educational tool, which, when thoughtfully integrated, can complement traditional methods and foster a more engaging and socially connected learning experience.
