Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the implementation of congregational church governance within KGPM “Eben Haezer” Pinabetengan and to assess the extent to which the local congregation exercises autonomy in church life. The research is motivated by the observed tension between the theological principles of congregationalism—which emphasize local church sovereignty, the priesthood of all believers, and collective deliberation—and the practical realities that reflect tendencies toward centralized authority. The research questions address: (1) how congregational governance is applied within KGPM, (2) what factors support or hinder its implementation, and (3) how the model is manifested in the case of the Eben Haezer congregation. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis for data collection. Thematic analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, and data validity was ensured through methodological and source triangulation. Findings reveal that although KGPM structurally adheres to a congregational model, in practice, it has shifted toward a more hierarchical system. Congregants are not actively involved in decision-making processes, leadership evaluation, or ministry structuring. This lack of participation has led to a governance crisis, creating a growing disconnect between leadership and the congregation. While some church leaders justify top-down intervention as necessary for maintaining unity, such practices undermine the core values of congregationalism. This indicates a functional erosion of local church autonomy. The study concludes that a theological and structural reorientation within KGPM is urgently needed to reaffirm its foundational congregational principles—emphasizing participatory governance, spiritual equality, and servant leadership. Such reorientation is essential to preserve the church’s identity as an autonomous, Spirit-led community shaped through collective discernment.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of Christian leadership strategies and financial management on the effectiveness of church ministry in GMIM Tomohon Tiga Region. Utilizing a quantitative associative approach with a survey method, the study analyzed data from church leaders and members across multiple congregations. Findings revealed that Christian leadership strategy has a significant positive effect on ministry effectiveness (p < 0.05), as does financial management. Simultaneously, both factors strongly predict ministry effectiveness, with R² = 0.979, indicating that 97.9% of variations in ministry effectiveness are explained by these variables. These results suggest that strengthening spiritual leadership and implementing professional financial management practices are crucial for enhancing the quality and impact of church ministry. Keywords: Christian leadership strategy, financial management, ministry effectiveness.

Abstract

This study investigates the theological and practical dimensions of offering management in the funeral liturgy of the Evangelical Christian Church in Talaud (GERMITA), with a specific focus on the Maranatha Mangaran congregation. Traditionally, GERMITA’s official funeral liturgy does not include offerings as a component of worship, despite their theological significance throughout biblical tradition. However, the Maranatha Mangaran congregation has adopted this practice, raising important questions about liturgical flexibility, contextual theology, and pastoral care. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with church leaders and members, participant observation during funeral services, and document analysis of liturgical regulations and church council decisions. Findings indicate that incorporating offerings into funeral liturgies holds deep theological meaning as an act of gratitude to God and also serves practical functions. It supports grieving families financially and enhances congregational solidarity. The practice reflects the church’s mission to serve both spiritual and material needs of its community. This research suggests that church leaders consider formal integration of offerings into funeral worship, as it embodies a meaningful theological response and addresses pastoral realities. The study contributes to ongoing discourse on contextual liturgy and strengthens the relevance of worship practices within GERMITA.

Abstract

This study explores the theological implications of Imago Dei for gender equality in the Indonesian context, emphasizing the equal status of women as co-bearers of the divine image. Drawing on a qualitative method with a critical literature review approach, this research analyzes biblical texts, theological interpretations, and socio-cultural realities related to gender discrimination. The study revisits the Hebrew terms tselem and demuth (Genesis 1:26–27), underscoring that both men and women reflect God’s likeness through intellect, morality, and relational capacity. However, patriarchal interpretations—especially within Old Testament narratives—have historically marginalized women by framing them as subordinate to men. In the Indonesian cultural context, these theological biases are compounded by social and linguistic constructs that reinforce gender hierarchy. The findings reveal that feminist theological frameworks provide a constructive reinterpretation of women’s roles in Scripture, portraying figures like Deborah, Hannah, and Rahab as agents of faith and leadership. This study concludes that recognizing women as co-image bearers of God is essential for theological reform and gender justice, and it urges the church to dismantle patriarchal structures, promote inclusive leadership, and collaborate with broader human rights efforts in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores the strategic optimization of family pastoral counseling within the context of KGPM Bukit Sion Tumumpa, a local church facing increasing pastoral challenges. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research employed field observations, interviews, and documentation to uncover the current state of counseling practices. Findings revealed three core issues: the absence of a structured system for counseling delivery, insufficient counseling competence among church leaders, and a lack of emotional safety for congregants seeking help. Counseling was often reactive, undocumented, and reliant solely on pastoral availability, without support from elders or deacons as mandated by church governance. Moreover, counseling literacy was minimal, and trust barriers due to gossip or judgment further discouraged congregants—particularly women and youth—from seeking support. These findings underscore the need for systemic reform, including scheduled pastoral visits, competency-based training, and the cultivation of safe, confidential spaces within the church. By addressing these gaps, local churches can transform pastoral counseling into a redemptive ministry that strengthens family units and enhances spiritual growth.

Abstract

This research is entitled Romanticism in the Novel Where Angels Fear to Tread by Edward Morgan Forster and aims to analyze how aspects of romanticism, both in active and passive forms, are reflected through the main characters in the novel. The method used is qualitative-descriptive analysis with a literary studies approach, especially the classical romanticism theory formulated by Lovejoy, Taum, and Faruk, as well as the concept of modern romanticism proposed by Wood. The results show that romanticism in this novel is realized through deep feelings, inner conflict, courage to defy social norms (active romanticism), as well as resignation and suffering due to obstruction of desire (passive romanticism). Lilia Herriton and Caroline Abbott are depicted as active romantics who dare to fight for love and freedom, while Philip Herriton, Harriet, and several other characters reflect passive romantics who are trapped in indecision and social conformity. This research is expected to enrich the treasure of literary studies, especially in understanding the relevance of classical and modern romanticism values in English literature.

Abstract

Conflict within church organizations is both inevitable and multifaceted, often shaped by doctrinal differences, leadership styles, personal ambition, and external political dynamics. While typically perceived as negative, conflict—when managed wisely—can serve as a catalyst for spiritual growth and communal renewal. This study aims to explore how the theological principles in Philippians 2:2–4 offer a biblical foundation for conflict resolution and the pursuit of unity in ecclesial contexts. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with an exegetical approach, the research integrates textual interpretation with conflict management theory to construct a holistic model of reconciliation. The exegetical analysis reveals that values such as mutual love, humility, being like-minded, and prioritizing the interests of others are central to Paul’s vision of church unity. These values not only offer spiritual guidance but also shape practical strategies for conflict transformation within church communities. The findings affirm that biblical principles, when embodied in leadership and practice, can reduce polarization, strengthen internal relationships, and empower the church as an agent of reconciliation in wider society.

Abstract

This article analyses 1 Kings 12:1–24 through the theoretical lens of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of structuration and Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of social critique. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach with a critical case study method, data were gathered through literature review, observation, and interviews conducted within the GMIM Moria Girian Indah congregation. The findings reveal that the conflict between Rehoboam and Jeroboam was not merely a matter of personal failure but rather part of a broader struggle over capital within the arena of power. Rehoboam's downfall stemmed from his inability to manage cultural and social capital effectively, whereas Jeroboam succeeded through prophetic legitimacy and popular support. The congregation’s reading of the biblical text is shaped by their respective habitus, reflecting their socio-economic dynamics and daily lived experiences. The biblical passage thus functions as a social mirror and a tool for critical reflection on the contemporary realities of the congregation.
