Abstract

This article analyzes and compares the history of the Orthodox and Catholic Churches, focusing on the historical background, theological developments, and the social impact of the Great Schism in the 11th century. The research employs a comparative approach to analyze the theological, administrative, and cultural differences that led to the division between the two churches. The findings of this study indicate that although the Orthodox and Catholic Churches share common roots in Christian tradition, key theological differences, such as the Filioque doctrine and the authority of the Pope, have shaped two distinct church identities, each evolving in different social and political contexts. This analysis also reveals the long-term impact of the schism on Christian communities worldwide.

Abstract

This article examines Martin Luther's views on ecclesiastical office, focusing on the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers and its implications for church ministry structures. According to Luther, every believer has direct access to God without hierarchical mediation, as outlined in the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers. The study employs a theological-normative approach and a literature review of Martin Luther's works, as well as relevant biblical texts concerning ecclesiastical office. Through a theological approach and biblical analysis, this article explores the relevance of Luther's views on ecclesiastical office in the context of contemporary church ministry. The findings indicate that, according to Luther, ecclesiastical office is not a form of hierarchical domination but a ministry grounded in the Word and love. This study contributes to the contemporary church's understanding of balancing spiritual authority with pastoral responsibility. Thus, this article offers a contribution to the modern church in reformulating the understanding of ecclesiastical office in a more theological and egalitarian manner.

Abstract

The struggle over whether salvation can be lost or not is a topic that frequently attracts attention among Christians. In the view that salvation can be lost, one of the verses used is Romans 11:22, particularly the word "cut off." On the other hand, there are views that disagree with interpreting this verse as evidence of the possibility of losing salvation. Based on these differing views, a deeper examination of the referenced verse is necessary. In analyzing this verse, the author will use a hermeneutical method with four analytical approaches: contextual, grammatical, lexical, and historical analysis. Based on the exploration of the text in Romans 11:22, it was found that the meaning of the word "cut off" does not refer to the possibility of losing salvation but serves as a stern warning that those who have been saved should not fall back into sin and transgression, as happened to the people of Israel in the past. However, if believers fall into sin, God will take firm action to remind them to repent and return to Him.

Abstract

In the context of a modern world increasingly marked by social fragmentation and individualistic tendencies, the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37) offers a radical ethical vision regarding love and the identity of one's neighbor. This article aims to analyze the theological message of the parable using a narrative interpretation approach, particularly through an examination of narrative structure, characterization, and the dynamics of social reversal presented by the text. The study's findings indicate that love in this narrative is not merely an emotional response but a concrete action that involves courage across social, religious, and ethnic boundaries. This parable rhetorically challenges exclusive paradigms within the early readers' community of the Gospel of Luke and redefines the concept of "neighbor" from a passive object of compassion to an active subject who initiates love. These findings are relevant for contemporary society in efforts to build an ethics of solidarity across identities, as well as providing a theological foundation for inclusive and transformative practices of love amid a global humanitarian crisis.

Abstract

This study discusses the phrase “image and likeness” in Genesis 1:26, which has caused much debate regarding the creation of man from the perspective of theologians and lay Christians. Genesis 1:26 is conflated with Genesis 5:1-3, as well as the appearance of the conjunction “and” in Genesis 1:26 which is not found in the original Hebrew text. In addition, practices such as the marriage of humans with animals and humans with objects further damage the image of God in humans. The purpose of this study is to provide a proper explanation of the true meaning of the phrase “image and likeness” in man. The method used is qualitative exegesis with eight steps of analysis: grammatical, lexical, textual, contextual (near and far context), structural, historical, theological, and exegetical. The results show that the addition of the conjunction “and” is a mistake, because in the Hebrew text there is no conjunction ? (we) which makes it seem as if the two words have different meanings, and that humans as the image and representative of God in the world must display God's authority. In conclusion, “image” and “likeness” have the same meaning; and man as the image of God must display authority and have dignity that is different from the rest of creation.

Abstract

This The Great Commission, as stated in Matthew 28:19–20, is a universal calling for every believer to proclaim the Gospel and make disciples of all nations. However, in the context of GSJA Gunungsari Balikpapan, it has been found that a low level of understanding of the Great Commission may pose a potential obstacle to the effective execution of mission work. This research employs a quantitative approach using a descriptive survey design and regression analysis to measure the impact of congregational understanding on mission implementation. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to members of GSJA Gunungsari Balikpapan and were subsequently analyzed to determine the correlation between the understanding of the Great Commission and participation in church missions. The findings reveal a significant positive influence between the level of understanding of the Great Commission and congregational involvement in mission activities, with a considerable percentage of contribution. This study is expected to provide valuable insights for GSJA Gunungsari Balikpapan in strengthening its spiritual development strategies to enhance both the understanding and participation of its members in church missions.

Abstract

In The Gospel of Mark, as the earliest theological historiographical document, presents significant interpretive complexities in New Testament studies. The absence of explicit statements regarding its authorial purpose has given rise to diverse hermeneutical approaches, ranging from christological to normative-canonical interpretations. This research aims to analyze the dual function of the Gospel of Mark through a historical-critical approach to identify ecclesiological and apologetic dimensions within the context of the first-century church. The study employs descriptive-qualitative analytical methods with a historical-critical approach to the text of the Gospel of Mark. Data were collected through systematic literature review of primary and secondary sources, analysis of historical background, and comparative examination of contemporary New Testament literature. The analysis reveals that the Gospel of Mark possesses a strategic dual function: (1) as an ecclesiological document that serves to construct the identity of the early Christian community, and (2) as an apologetic document that responds to Roman persecution and political accusations against the church. The narrative structure and material selection in the Gospel of Mark reflect systematic efforts to present the Christian community as a peace-bearing group while simultaneously legitimizing the church's existence within the Roman socio-political context. The Gospel of Mark is not limited to merely kerygmatic or catechetical functions, but rather possesses significant apologetic dimensions in responding to external challenges facing the first-century church. This dual function demonstrates theological and strategic sophistication in efforts to defend and strengthen the position of the early Christian community amid political and social pressures.
