Abstract

This research aims to elucidate the history of land ownership by Christian Church institutions in the Dutch East Indies colony. In addition to providing a descriptive account of its development, this article endeavors to delve into various documentary sources concerning ownership, particularly the legal status associated with the Christian Church as an institution within the colonial legal framework. Through an examination of its legal standing, this research seeks to discern the nature of the Church's land ownership. Given the historical nature of this study, the historical method is employed to guide the research towards a comprehensive reconstruction. This method comprises five phases: document exploration (heuristic), critical analysis, exceptions, interpretation, and reconstruction. Emphasis is placed on authentic documents to ensure the accuracy and objectivity of the information presented in this reconstruction. In conclusion, this report elucidates the legal status of the Christian Church under the colonial legal system and its implications for material ownership by the Church based on its legal standing. Thus, shedding light on the origins of asset ownership status held by the Christian Church in present-day Indonesia.

Abstract

This research discusses the tithe offering according to Malachi 3:6-12, which is one of the topics with a high level of complexity, resulting in various interpretations. Tithing is also a highly sensitive issue in the lives of believers in relation to the church, causing controversies and even divisions. The method used is topical/theological exegesis with an emphasis on contextual-historical analysis. As a result, it is found that tithing is one of God's commands for the nation of Israel who deviated from the Torah law. Regarding the location of tithing, it is the house of God, which in the Old Testament refers to a place within the house of God, but nowadays it can refer to the church, organizations, or individuals in need, not limited to the local church, as long as it is to advance the work of God and not for the personal interests of the recipient. The purpose or result of obedience in giving tithes is gratitude and the glorification of God's name. Tithing represents a discontinuity because believers today do not live under the Torah law, but under the grace of God through the death of Christ.

Abstract

Interpretations regarding the meanings of the phrases "spiritual man" and "natural man" as found in the text 1 Corinthians 2:14-3:1 have led to differences of opinion among scholars and theologians. There are at least three concepts related to the terms "spiritual man" and "natural man". First, these entities refer to the core of human nature which possesses contrasting characteristics. Second, there is a gradual development of the spiritual dimension within a person. Third, the inner state of humans is also characterized by the alternating dominance between spiritual and worldly aspects. The possible causes of variations in interpretations related to the terminology of "spiritual man" and "natural man" may be due to differences in the usage of different original texts, especially "natural man" which uses ψυχικὸς ἄνθρωπος in chapter 2 and σαρκίνοις in chapter 3. Differences in textual sources indicate variations in contexts and usage, which can lead to diverse understandings of these terms. Research conducted using Grassmick's nine-step qualitative exegesis method aims to seek the meanings of the phrases "spiritual man" and "natural man". From a series of exegetical processes that have been carried out, the analysis results show that the concept of "natural man" (ψυχικὸς ἄνθρωπος and σαρκίνοις) has fundamental differences with the "spiritual man" (ὁ πνευματικὸς), as these terms not only refer to sequential or interchangeable spiritual conditions, but also describe a fundamental status in someone's regeneration in Christ.

Abstract

The congregation of Laodicea stands out as the sole assembly within the Book of Revelation that does not receive commendation from Christ. This article undertakes an examination of various factors contributing to the lack of praise bestowed upon the Laodicean congregation by Christ, employing a linguistic analysis encompassing Greek syntax, aspect, and aktionsart. Through a detailed exploration of these linguistic dimensions, insights into the theological implications surrounding the Laodicean community's portrayal in Revelation are elucidated, shedding light on its significance within the broader narrative of the text.

Abstract

The story of Elijah in 1 Kings 19:1-18 is often understood as a narrative about disappointment and escape. This article aims to analyze the psychological trauma experienced by Elijah. The research focuses on Elijah's experiences following his battle against the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Despite achieving victory, Elijah falls into depression and a desire to die due to the political threats from Jezebel. This article explores the parallels between Elijah's story and the characteristics of psychological trauma, such as feelings of threat, flashbacks, and avoidance. The journey from the wilderness to Mount Horeb brings Elijah to encounter God in a gentle voice and the whisper of a soft breeze, renewing his strength and giving him the confidence to continue his mission. This research employs qualitative methods with a literature review on psychological trauma and narrative text analysis to gain deeper understanding. Reading Elijah's story through the lens of psychological trauma offers several important lessons: first, trauma can be experienced by anyone, including those who seem strong; second, God is always present and provides healing for the wounded; and third, God's voice can come in silence and gentleness to guide us toward resilience.

Abstract

The word 'remain' in 2 John verse 2 TB 2 version contains problems. First, there are three Greek variants of this word, namely μένουσαν, ἐνοικοῦσαν, and οὖσαν. Second, each variant has a certain theological emphasis based on the chosen understanding. Third, A Textual Commentary on The Greek New Testament does not detect and identify the existence of these three variants. This article was written to achieve several goals: first, to review each variant to discover its theological meaning; second, comparing the three variants to determine which possible variation is closest to the original text of the Bible. Through a text critical approach supported by grammatical-syntactic analysis, the results obtained are that the first variant, namely μένουσαν (menousan) has the strongest position with a lot of support from a cultural, contextual and theological perspective. The habitual aspect can be seen in John's tendency to use the word μένω (meno) in his writings, with a total of 67 uses or 56.8% of 118 occurrences in the New Testament, even 31 ancient manuscripts including the two Great Uncial Codexes (Sinaiticus and Vaticanus) and the Vulgate choose the first version. The contextual aspect can be seen in verse 2b, namely μεθ᾽ ἡμῶν ἔσται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα which emphasizes time and from the appearance of the word μένω in verse 9 which shows harmony. The theological aspect can be seen in emphasizing the meaning of the permanence of truth (aletheia) based on lexical analysis, including its use in secular ancient Greek literature, and contextual analysis, namely the appearance of τὸν αἰῶνα (ton aiona) in verse 2b and προάγων (proagon), so that John's message is that the congregation persists in the true teaching, without leaving it.

Abstract

Genesis chapter 3 narrates the entry of sin into the world and its consequence, original sin, for all of humanity. Amid this darkness, there is a glimmer of hope in the narrative, as God actively seeks out sinful humanity. This study aims to examine God's response to humankind after the fall into sin. Utilizing a qualitative literature study method, this research conducts a literary analysis of Genesis 3:8-19. The analysis includes translating the BHS text, constructing the text’s structure, character analysis, literary structure, and examining the dramatic flow of the text. The literary analysis yields three key findings. First, it is God who takes the initiative to seek out humanity after the fall into sin. God’s role as the protagonist in this narrative serves as key evidence of His desire to communicate with and save fallen humanity. The context of the fall and God's initiative to approach humanity underscores His pivotal role as the protagonist in this story. Second, while God seeks out sinners, His discipline still applies to those who violate His commands. This is clearly reflected in the dramatic structure intentionally crafted by the biblical author. Third, God takes the initiative to provide a solution to the problem of sin. The enmity established by God between the serpent and the offspring of the woman indicates His effort to deliver humanity from the bondage of sin.

Abstract

The text of Genesis 2:18 is one of the passages debated by Complementarians and Egalitarians regarding the role of women as "helpers." Complementarians believe that the role of a helper indicates the functional subordination of women to men. According to them, Adam and Eve are spiritually equal, but Eve is not equal to Adam in function because she is his helper. For this reason, Complementarians refuse to place women in positions of leadership in the church. On the other hand, Egalitarians believe that women should have the same opportunities as men, including in church leadership. This study aims to analyze Genesis 2:18 in relation to the debate on women's leadership in the church. The method used is exegesis, to uncover the meaning according to the original author's intent when the text was written. The results of this study indicate that the helper provided by God is not a subordinate, but a partner. Women were created as partners to help their husbands so that God's mandate could be fulfilled through the unity of the two. This context applies to the household, not the church. Therefore, this role should not be used to prohibit women from teaching and leading in the church.

Abstract

Forgiveness of sins is an essential and fundamental principle in Christian teachings, reflecting the love and compassion of God, which provides humans the opportunity to correct their mistakes and return to Him. However, according to Suhento Liauw's perspective based on local church theology, there are significant differences in understanding and interpretation. This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the concept of forgiveness of sins according to Suhento Liauw within the framework of local church theology, with the objective of understanding and evaluating Suhento Liauw's comprehension as well as its implications and relevance to Christian teaching and spiritual practice. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with literature study, where the data will be analyzed using content analysis and theological analysis methods. The findings indicate that Suhento Liauw's view on the concept of forgiveness of sins in local church theology considers believers as the subjects of forgiveness, so their sins are forgiven and erased before Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, Suhento Liauw rejects the notion that God the Father is also an object for believers seeking forgiveness. This research provides valuable contributions to theological discussions and thoughts regarding the forgiveness of sins, with the hope of producing a more accurate and beneficial understanding for the church and the broader Christian community, as well as enriching the understanding of forgiveness of sins in the context of local church theology.
