Abstract

One of the effects of the existence of Covid-19 was that face-to-face schooling could not be conducted continuously, and so another possible way of learning had to be arranged. The difference between online and face-to-face learning has invited some perceptions and obstacles to the implementation. Thus, this study aimed to describe the parents perception on the benefits and challenges towards the distance learning during the pandemic at school in Aceh, Indonesia. Thisstudy took a case in one junior high school in Banda Aceh, Aceh, Indonesia. There were 25 parents taken purposively as the sample. The study used questionnaire and interview to collect the data. The questionnaire and interview guide consisted of 10 questions posted on Google Form. The results found that the implementation of distance learning has led to the benefits and challenges. A number of challenges faced by parents when assisting their children with distance learning included lack of access to technology. Furthermore, parents had lack of knowledge or skills to assist their children with their homework, especially if the subject matter was unfamiliar. The last challenge was time constraints among the parents, making it difficult to find the time to support their children's distance learning. On the other hand, the Covid-19 pandemic has also brought significant gains toward education. The benefits were to minimize the children to be infected by the Covid-19, to engage relationship between the kids and parents, and to encourage parents to use their creativity and digital literacy in implementing the learning material.

Abstract

Gender discrimination in the workplace remains a significant challenge, affecting various aspects of employment, including hiring, promotion, and compensation. Despite advancements in gender equality, women are often treated less favorably than men, irrespective of their qualifications and performance. This issue is pervasive and can be influenced by deeply rooted cultural and religious beliefs that shape attitudes and decisions in professional settings. Women frequently face barriers to leadership roles and receive lower wages compared to their male counterparts. This paper explores the ongoing gender discrimination in workplaces, highlighting its causes and impacts, and proposes actionable strategies to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment for all employees.

Abstract

This study evaluates an English coursebook for young learners, My Next Words, using Tomlinson’s (2011) framework, which emphasizes meaningful input, engagement, affective involvement, and learner autonomy. The analysis focuses on the coursebook's ability to align with young learners’ developmental needs, cognitive processes, and social interactions. Findings reveal that the coursebook excels in engaging learners through repetitive activities, songs, and colorful illustrations that support vocabulary retention. However, limitations were identified in areas such as personalization, cultural inclusivity, and opportunities for learner autonomy. The lack of open-ended tasks and minimal scaffolding in grammar activities restricts learners’ ability to explore language creatively. Additionally, the coursebook assumes a uniform classroom context, which reduces its applicability across diverse cultural settings. Recommendations include incorporating more scaffolded tasks, integrating culturally inclusive content, and designing activities that foster personalization and learner autonomy. By addressing these gaps, My Next Words could better support young learners' language acquisition and align with both developmental and pedagogical principles. This research contributes valuable insights into the evaluation and development of effective EYL coursebooks that cater to holistic language learning needs.

Abstract

Motivated by an increasing reliance on subtitles among audiences who may not fully grasp the source language of movies and videos, this study explores subtitle translation, as subtitles have an essential function in facilitating comprehension among audiences. Here, the study focuses on a TED Talk video titled “How Books Can Open Your Mind”. The purpose is to examine the effects of translation errors in subtitles. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, involving several viewings of the video to attain a comprehensive knowledge of the context. Errors were then identified, categorized, and analyzed using relevant literature and references, including the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI). Findings reveal that the identified errors consisted of semantic changes, singular nominal forms, reduction, misinterpretation errors, amplification, and the use of uncommon words. Of these errors, semantic changes were the most frequent, followed by reductions and uncommon words. This study hopes to discover these translation problems in order to better support subtitle translators as well as enhance the viewing experience of target-language audiences in the years to come.
