Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of humorous speech acts in the Barakatak column of Manglé magazine as a reflection of pragmatic communication within the Sundanese cultural context. Humor in local, regionally-based media plays a vital role in conveying social criticism and preserving the existence of indigenous languages. However, linguistic research on local humor—especially from a pragmatic perspective—remains notably limited. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach. The data consist of humorous texts extracted from the Barakatak column in the September–October editions. Various types of speech acts were identified, including locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. Furthermore, each entry was found to contain humor functions such as commissive, impositive, expressive, and assertive functions. Lastly, numerous forms of sociocultural criticism were discovered, illustrating the embodiment of local wisdom in Sundanese culture. The analysis of eleven Barakatak entries revealed key patterns in speech acts, humor functions, and cultural context. These findings indicate that the humor presented in Barakatak serves not merely as entertainment, but also as an effective and nuanced form of cultural communication for articulating social criticism within the Sundanese community.

Abstract

Language acquisition is one of the essential processes in human development, especially during childhood. This process takes place gradually, starting from age 0 through to adulthood. This study aims to analyze the acquisition of the Indonesian language in children aged 4–5 years at Al Hidayah Kuripan Kindergarten, focusing on four psycholinguistic competencies: semantics, phonology, morphology, and syntax. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The results show that the children at Al Hidayah Kindergarten Kuripan have developed the ability to understand word meanings according to context (semantics), produce language sounds with substitution and simplification processes (phonology), form words using affixation and reduplication (morphology), and construct sentence structures such as declarative, imperative, and interrogative sentences (syntax). However, these abilities are still at a basic level, with limited vocabulary and frequent grammatical errors as well as sound mismatches. Additionally, the results indicate that the influence of the mother tongue (Javanese) is present in several aspects, such as the use of non-standard words and distinctive particles. This research contributes to the understanding of early childhood language development and serves as a reference for parents, teachers, and policymakers in supporting effective language learning.

Abstract

This study explores how anxiety and love intertwine in the lyrics of Payung Teduh’s album Dunia Batas through Schleiermacher’s hermeneutic framework, which fuses grammatical and psychological interpretation. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, six key tracks—“Berdua Saja,” “Menuju Senja,” “Untuk Perempuan yang Sedang di Pelukan,” “Angin Pujaan Hujan,” “Resah,” and “Di Ujung Malam”—were analyzed for their symbolic language, metaphorical imagery, and narrative structure. Grammatical analysis uncovers recurring motifs—the night as a realm of intimacy, roses as emblems of love’s paradoxical beauty and pain, and the branching wind as a metaphor for emotional uncertainty. Psychological analysis delves into the songwriter’s emotional context, revealing an inner tension between the hope for connection and the fear of rejection. Findings demonstrate that Dunia Batas orchestrates a continuous poetic dialogue between longing and unrest, conveyed through its evocative lyrics, gentle melodies, and rich harmonies. By highlighting song lyrics as both artistic expressions and reflections of contemporary social–psychological dynamics, this research advances the study of music hermeneutics in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines how contextual factors influence the social skills of Wendy, an autistic protagonist in the film Please Stand By. Adopting a descriptive qualitative design and pragmatic analysis grounded in Wilson and Sperber’s Relevance Theory, the research investigates Wendy’s processing of social cues across everyday conversations and unfamiliar environments during travel. Data comprised dialogue transcripts and observations of nonverbal behaviors, analyzed to identify pragmatic barriers: dependence on concrete rules, difficulty inferring implicit meanings, literal interpretation of unexpected changes, and vulnerability to social manipulation. Findings indicate Wendy’s reliance on explicit, structured instructions to navigate social contexts; when cues were ambiguous or implied, she exhibited misunderstandings and heightened emotional responses. Conversely, detailed guidance enabled accurate adaptation in certain scenarios, highlighting the efficacy of targeted communicative interventions. This study enhances understanding of autism by elucidating context-driven communicative challenges and endorses inclusive strategies to foster social participation among individuals with ASD. Ultimately, the research raises awareness of autism’s social dimensions and offers practical insights for practitioners and society.

Abstract

Semantics has various types of meanings contained within it, one of which is grammatical meaning. Grammatical meaning is a meaning that arises due to the processes of affixation (addition of affixes), reduplication (repetition), and composition (compounding). Grammatical meaning in this study is used to analyze the lyrics of songs on Bernadya's latest album titled "Sialnya, Hidup Harus Tetap Berjalan" (Unfortunately, Life Must Go On). The aim is to identify and describe the forms of grammatical meaning in the lyrics of songs that are currently viral, listened to and liked by those who are heartbroken. This research method employs a descriptive qualitative approach with the steps of directly observing and listening to Bernadya's songs, as well as analyzing the text in the lyrics of the album "Sialnya Hidup Harus Tetap Berjalan" which emphasizes in-depth meaning. The results of this study found many forms of grammatical meaning that arise due to the process of affixation, which includes verbs such as suffixes, prefixes, and confixes. Many instances were also found in the reduplication process, although not more than the affixation data, and there is only one instance of grammatical meaning through the process of composition.

Abstract

Banceuy Subang Traditional Village is a traditional village that still maintains traditional values passed down from ancestors such as the tradition of the kawung nyadap process or commonly known as sugar palm tapping. In Banceuy, there are still some people who tap kawung trees to take field water and process it into palm sugar. Each process of tapping a kawung tree has an interesting meaning that can be visualized through a theatrical performance. To organize the formation of the visualization of the nyadap kawung process, it is supported by Gustav Freytag's dramatic structure theory which includes five elements, namely exposition, complication, climax, reversal, deoument. This research uses a qualitative approach. In research, a qualitative approach can be taken through observation, interviews and literature studies. The results of this research present a visualization of the process of tapping kawung into theater characters, there are three main figures visualized, namely 1. Hideung Geulis as a kawung tree, 2. Asep as a tapper of kawung trees and 3. Traditional Leader as an elder who perform the nyadap kawung ritual.

Abstract

The lakon “Kumbakarna Gugur” in wayang golek highlights the moral ambivalence and symbolic dualism inherent in the character of Kumbakarna. As a warlord of the Alengka kingdom, Kumbakarna faces doubts between his loyalty to his brother Rahwana and his responsibility to the people and his country Alengka. The purpose of this research is to analyze ambivalence and symbolic dualism in Kumbakarna's character using Vladimir Propp's narrative function theory and Claude Lévi-Strauss' binary opposition. The research uses a qualitative method with a narrative analysis approach based on data from the text of the lakon and interviews with dalang wayang golek. The results showed that Kumbakarna's role as donor and villain in the narrative structure reflects a complex conflict of values. Through the binary opposition analysis approach, Kumbakarna is interpreted as a symbolic representation of the combination of virtue and vice that has significant relevance in reflecting leadership values. The moral values contained in this play such as sacrifice and responsibility become an important educational medium for the community. This research provides a new contribution to the study of wayang golek purwa as an art form that is not only entertaining but also rich in philosophical meaning.

Abstract

In Kendal Regency, elementary school students' interest in learning Javanese has declined, as evidenced by the fact that 39.7% of students have not yet mastered the subject. Students have expressed that they prefer learning with visual representations rather than just theory from textbooks. Therefore, this Public Service Advertisement (PSA) poster design aims to increase students' interest in learning Javanese by integrating visual elements and relevant learning material. The data collection methods used in this design include interviews and questionnaires for primary data, and observations and literature reviews for secondary data. The analysis in this design is conducted using the 5W+1H approach, along with the five-stage design method by Robin Landa. This poster features Javanese cultural materials in line with the Javanese curriculum for elementary schools, including topics such as wayang, traditional Javanese houses, tembang macapat, Javanese traditional dance, and Javanese script. It is expected that this poster can be optimally used according to its function to increase students' interest in learning Javanese at the elementary school level in Kendal Regency.

Abstract

This study examines mystical elements in Teungku Don’s character in Arafat Nur’s novel Percikan Darah di Bunga, exploring their interplay with Acehnese spirituality, social conflict, and cultural identity. Employing a descriptive qualitative design with mimetic and expressive approaches, primary data were drawn from the novel’s text and supplemented by relevant secondary sources. Data were collected through literature review and document analysis, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s three-stage model (data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing). Findings reveal seven dimensions of mystical representation: (1) an innate spiritual aura; (2) dhikr practices enabling transcendental experiences and soul release; (3) perception of supernatural phenomena; (4) telepathic insight into others’ thoughts and feelings; (5) prophetic visions through dreams; (6) eccentric behavior as a social marker of mysticism; and (7) the limits of mystical power in shaping conflict outcomes. These dimensions not only reflect entrenched spiritual traditions within Acehnese society but also serve as a literary vehicle to probe themes of social tension, identity formation, and the search for meaning amid violence. The study contributes to literary and cultural scholarship by demonstrating how mystical motifs articulate and negotiate socio-cultural dynamics in Aceh.
