Abstract

Reading is a crucial skill that must be mastered in learning English. This study aims to determine the correlation between self-efficacy and students' reading comprehension among sixth-semester students at the University of Pasir Pengaraian. The research employed a correlational design to investigate whether a relationship exists between self-efficacy and reading comprehension. Data were collected through a questionnaire and a multiple-choice test administered to 28 sixth-semester students. The analysis revealed a significant (2-tailed) value of 0.031, which is less than 0.05, indicating a correlation between self-efficacy and reading comprehension, though not a strong one. The results showed that self-efficacy in reading comprehension was generally high, with an average score of 72.86. Based on the questionnaire, 32% (9 students) fell into the very high category, while 68% (19 students) were in the high category. For the reading test results, 9 students (32%) were in the excellent category, 7 students (25%) in the good category, 8 students (29%) in the sufficient category, and 2 students (7%) each in the low and very low categories. From this data, the researchers concluded that students' reading comprehension falls into the good category, with an average score of 71.25. The correlation coefficient (rxy) was 0.408, which, according to the correlation index table, indicates a low correlation. Keywords : Self Efficacy, Reading Comprehension, Correlation

Abstract

Language and culture are inseparable, as language reflects cultural values. The spread of English throughout the world has brought Western cultural influences that can conflict with Islamic values, especially in Indonesia. This research investigates the development of English learning materials that integrate Islamic values, focusing on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in Islamic educational institutions. This research utilizes a qualitative approach by using document analysis to identify effective learning strategies. The results show that the integration of Islamic values can be achieved through various techniques, such as code-switching, contextual connections with Islamic teachings, and culturally relevant examples in literature teaching. The results highlight the importance of adapting educational content to Islamic values while improving language proficiency. The findings have important implications for the development of culturally appropriate learning materials in Islamic educational institutions Keywords : English material. Islamic values. Abstract

Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill that enables students to extract meaning from Reading comprehension is a crucial skill that enables students to extract meaning from texts, supporting their academic success, professional growth, and cognitive development. This qualitative study explores the reading comprehension strategies of eighth-grade students at Al-Khoir Islamic Boarding School in Padang Lawas, with data collected from 22 students through questionnaires and structured interviews. The results reveal that skimming and scanning are the dominant techniques, with skimming being the most frequently used method. About 50% of participants expressed that these strategies were effective due to their simplicity and speed in aiding text comprehension, with skimming receiving the highest score among the four strategies assessed. While these strategies allow for efficient reading, the study suggests that students engage less with more comprehensive techniques like intensive and extensive reading, which are essential for fostering deeper comprehension and critical thinking skills. This preference for skimming and scanning may be influenced by the boarding school’s structured environment, which creates time pressures, as well as the students' language proficiency, which may limit their ability to engage with more complex texts. The findings emphasize the need for instructional strategies that promote a balanced approach, integrating both surface-level and in-depth reading techniques to enhance overall language proficiency. Abstract

Emerging democracies and post-conflict nations are now stabilizing and democratizing as a result of elections. This study delves into power dynamics within media discourse, focusing on the press conference held by the Ghana Electoral Commission concerning the acquisition of a new biometric voter management system. Drawing from Chilton's (2004) framework of coercion, legitimisation, and delegitimisation, it investigates how the conference escalated political tensions by reiterating the Commission’s decision, rebutting opposition claims, and emphasizing the legitimacy of the new system. Using qualitative content analysis, the study offers a nuanced examination of language usage, highlighting inclusion and distancing techniques, along with ideological underpinnings, employed by the Commission to justify the procurement. Notably, descriptive terms like "expired," "bloated," and "out-of-life" are utilized to characterise the current voter register, aiming to underscore the necessity of the proposed changes. Abstract

The objectives of this study was to investigate phonological conditioning of the multiple affixations pa-hu in Toba Batak. The method of this study is descriptive qualitative approach to describe Toba Batak phenomena deeply. While multiple affixations have been widely examined in Indonesian language  and in other regional languages, its manifestations in Toba Batak remain largely unexplored. Therefore, this study fills this gap. The findings reveal four distinct categories of phonologically conditioned allomorphs of the multiple affixations pa-hu in Toba Batak with the following requirements: (1) if the root adjective ends in sound [k], [n], or [ŋ], the multiple affixations pa-hu appear as [pa-ku]; (2) if the root adjective ends in sound [m] or [p], the multiple affixations pa-hu appear as [pa-pu]; (3) if the root adjective ends in sound [s], the multiple affixations pa-hu appear as [pa-su]; and (4) if the root adjective ends in sound [t], the multiple affixations pa-hu appear as [pa-tu]. The implications highlight the need to protect regional languages like Toba Batak in the face of globalisation and reach applicable domains like cultural revitalisation. Thus, this study advocates for more research on under-represented languages by bridging the gap between theoretical linguistics and real-world conservation initiatives. Abstract

This study investigated the use of video as a medium to improve eighth-grade students’ narrative writing ability and interest. Using a quasi-experimental design with pre-tests and post-tests, two classes (experimental and control), each consisting of 30 students, were selected through cluster random sampling at SMP Negeri 2 Parepare. Writing tests and questionnaires were employed for data collection. Results showed that the experimental class outperformed the control class, with post-test mean scores of 74.30 and 69.80, respectively. Questionnaire results also indicated a high level of student interest (82.30). A t-test confirmed a significant difference between the classes (t-test = 2.18 > t-table = 2.00), supporting the hypothesis. The findings suggest that video effectively enhances students’ narrative writing ability and interest. Keywords : Video-Based Instruction; writing; narratives text

Abstract

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is a widely acclaimed novel that explores themes of identity, conformity, and social control. While numerous studies have examined the novel through various literary and critical lenses, there is a notable lack of research analyzing it through the Marxist postulates of power dynamics, and ideological control. This study addresses this gap by applying Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to investigate how the novel portrays power dynamics and ideological control resulting in oppression of characters and the internalization of ideology. This qualitative research examines Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro through the Marxist postulates of power dynamics, and ideological control, utilizing Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as an analytical model.  By applying Van Dijk’s CDA framework, the research reveals how the clones, as a marginalized underclass, internalize their exploitation, reinforcing the hegemonic structures that govern them. The findings of this study contributes to Marxist literary criticism and discourse analysis, offering new insights into the intersection of language, power, and ideology in Ishiguro’s dystopian narrative. Abstract

Ecofeminism is an approach for understanding the interconnected oppression of women and nature, emphasizing the need to address both simultaneously. In Ecofeminism, the relationship between the feminine and the natural world is explored to reveal patterns of domination and resistance. Many researchers have applied ecofeminism to different literary works, but there is inadequate research found on the ecofeminist exploration of Kishwar Naheed’s poems. Applying textual analysis by Catherine Belsey, the study aims to qualitatively explore the representation of nature and the feminine within Naheed’s poetry. The findings of this study suggested that Naheed’s poems intertwine environmental and gender concerns, highlighting the dual exploitation and resilience of women and nature. This analysis emphasizes how ecofeminist perspectives enhance the thematic depth and critical understanding of Naheed’s poetry, affirming their relevance in literary interpretation Keywords : Eco-feminism; Environment; Oppression; Kishwar Naheed

Abstract

Effective communication in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting requires pragmatic competence as it enables EFL learners to use language, particularly to employ request strategies appropriately. However, based on the results of previous studies, EFL learners often face difficulties in selecting request strategies that fit the communicative contexts. Therefore, this study aims to explore the request strategies employed by Indonesian EFL learners and examine the influence of social status and distance on their strategy use. Seventeen upper-intermediate university students enrolled in an English course participated in this study. The data were collected through an open-ended written Discourse Completion Task (DCT) consisting of six scenarios that described various levels of social status and distance between interlocutors. To collect the data, the DCT was distributed through Google Form and participants were asked to freely write their responses for each scenario. The responses provided by participants were analyzed based on the classification of request strategies by Trosborg (1995) through qualitative thematic analysis. The findings reveal that Indonesian EFL learners had a strong preference for conventionally indirect request strategy, particularly by questioning the hearer’s ability/willingness. Moreover, they tended to overgeneralize politeness forms, in which they consistently used conventionally indirect strategy across various social contexts. This finding suggests their inability to adjust strategies in diverse social situations. Additionally, inappropriate use of informal and confrontational language was also found, indicating a need for the development of cross-cultural awareness. The findings of this study imply that Indonesian EFL learners need to enhance their pragmatic competence to navigate diverse social situations effectively in English. Abstract

This study investigates the internal and external constraints faced by law students at the Islamic University of Riau in developing their English speaking skills. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through questionnaires administered to 37 students enrolled in the English for Law Students course during the 2023/2024 academic year. The findings reveal that internal barriers, particularly speaking anxiety (68%) and fear of making mistakes (62%), significantly hinder students’ oral proficiency. Externally, insufficient opportunities for speaking practice (62%) and learning materials that lack relevance to legal contexts (57%) also contribute to the challenges encountered. The study underscores the necessity for psychological support and pedagogical adjustments, recommending communicative and context-based teaching methods tailored to legal English. Such interventions aim to enhance students' confidence and speaking performance, preparing them for the demands of the global legal profession. This research highlights the multidimensional nature of language learning obstacles and calls for integrated strategies addressing both affective and contextual factors. Keywords : Analysis; Speaking Skills
