Abstract

Blended learning is a learning strategy that combines face-to-face learning (both traditional in-class and virtually with video conferences) with online learning (e-learning). Blended learning is used as the best solution for dealing with restrictions on large-scale activities in Indonesia due to the spread of the coronavirus. SMAN 1 Porong applies blended learning to ensure the teaching and learning process continues, especially in learning English. On the other hand, teachers in this school face challenges in implementing blended learning. Therefore, the purposes of this study are to reveal in detail the implementation of blended learning and the challenges faced by teachers using case study research. To collect data, the researchers used observation and unstructured interview techniques. The results of this study indicate that SMAN 1 Porong has successfully implemented blended learning, especially for English lessons. However, the English teachers at the school are not free from challenges, such as the difficulty of finding the right strategy for face-to-face and online classes. This study implies that, however, the success of blended learning must be accompanied by teachers' creativity in teaching both face-to-face and online and the support of school facilities.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating a decision-making process based on Freudian Psychoanalytic theory in Gayle Forman’s If I Stay. This study specifically focuses on the main character, Mia Hall. Based on Freud’s, all human behaviour, including decision-making, is influenced by the interaction of three structures of personality: Id, Ego, and Superego. This study discussed the interrelation of those structures in affecting Mia’s decision-making process. Furthermore, this study also searched for the prominent domination explicated in Mia’s final decision. The writers applied Freudian Psychoanalysis to reveal the main focus of this study. The compelling utterances and narrations from the novel are considered the primary source of data. Then, the data are classified into Id, Ego, and Superego before looking for the interrelation and dominant structure. Besides Psychoanalytic, this study also applied character and characterization theory to help the writers analyse the utterances and behaviour of Mia. The result reveals that, though the Id, Ego, and Superego have their desire, these three structures can balance each other and eventually lead Mia to a decision. It is crucial to learn and investigate the dynamic of the decision-making process encountered by a human.

Abstract

This research aims to know the students' perception of using zoom application in a debate course during crisis remote teaching. The government of Indonesia gave an order to the Higher Education Commission, asked them to start preparing for crisis remote teaching via online learning modes, rescheduled all of the exams given, and helped the students online learning until the COVID-19 crisis remained unchanged. Online learning is the leading choice for instruction within the middle of the Covid-19 flare-up. In Indonesia, not all students are commonplace with the online learning framework, so this has become a new thing that requires adjustment. The research design used is mix method in this research. There are 26 university students who participate in this research. This research was presented quantitatively and descriptively to reveal the students' perceptions and difficulties comprehensively. The research finds ZOOM Application gets a positive perception because it is effective and comfortable. However, the problems that the students face are the device to do online learning and internet connection. It is suggested that zoom app is still appropriate to be used in debate course class due to many advantages than the problems that emerge during crisis remote teaching.

Abstract

Writing skill is regarded as troublesome for students, leading to errors occurring in the students’ writing. Thus, this paper aims to explore the linguistic feature errors in students' writing and how those errors can be minimized by modified peer-written corrective feedback. This study employed a qualitative method with Classroom Action Research (CAR) design through content analysis. The data was collected from vocational high school students’ composition of the dialogue draft on the ‘offering help’ theme. The results reveal that apart from their level of proficiency, students make errors more on linguistic features in their first phase than in their second phase. It is due to the role of modified peer-written corrective feedback given by their peers of different groups. This feedback assists the students in learning their linguistic aspect errors in their writing. In the process of writing, the modified written corrective feedback is imperative to spur students to apply good linguistic features in their writing. In such a case, learning from peer feedback is a good technique since the process becomes the priority rather than the final product. Finally, modified peer-written corrective feedback is effective in enhancing the students’ writing skills, particularly in writing dialogue.

Abstract

Studying social relations embedded in the use of phatic expression plays an important role to detect the position of each participant in the communication events. This research was aimed at investigating how the lecturers of the English Department STKIP PGRI Jombang enacted phatic communication as part of a power and solidarity strategy in maintaining good social relations through dialogues with their students. It employed qualitative research by adopting the theory of critical classroom discourse analysis to investigate how the lecturer enacted phatic communication as power and solidarity strategies to the students in the classroom. It related the examination of phatic communication and social analysis to get true data analysis of the research. The findings showed the lecturers enacted phatic communication as a powerful strategy for their students by addressing the students in terms of the learning process and controlling the preparation of the group discussion. Furthermore, the lecturers also enacted phatic communication as a solidarity strategy with their students by exercising personal experiences and expressing sad feelings to the student whose father passed away. Thus, it could be concluded that when the lecturers exercised power over the students indicated that their social relations are unequal. On the contrary, the solidarity exposed by the lecturers to their students indicated that their social relations are equal.

Abstract

Research in speaking anxiety has been done by some previous studies, however, none of them has investigated the effect of self-regulated strategy training on reducing symptoms of speaking anxiety in online learning. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the symptoms of speaking anxiety reported by students before and after following self-regulated strategy training and also explain how the self-regulated strategy training help students to reduce the symptoms of speaking anxiety during online learning. The researcher used pre-experimental method which was a one-group pre-posttest. There were 20 students from Senior high school as the sample. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. To collect the data, a questionnaire and interview was distributed. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics, specifically paired sample t-tests and transcribing from interview’s result. The result of this research reveals that students have symptoms of anxiety before following self-regulated strategy training including tenseness, worried, confusing, jumbling, panic, trembling, stiffing, palpitation, sleep disturbances and perspiring. However, after following self-regulated strategy training the students can reduce all the symptoms. In conclusion, self-regulated training could reduce symptoms of speaking anxiety during online English learning.

Abstract

Research on disagreement is always associated with politeness. Research on politeness strategies for native local language outside the actual location has not much observed. This research aims to identify the disagreement strategies in Indonesian used by Senior High School (SHS) and College (C) graduates of Madurese who have lived in Surabaya for more than five years. This study used a survey design (quantitative method) by applying a questionnaire and interview as the instruments. The subjects of this research were 25 SHS graduates and 25 C graduates. To analyze the data, SPSS version 2.0 was used. The results of data analysis showed that Madurese SHS and C graduates chose the disagreement strategy of expression of regret, contradiction, hedges opinion, counterclaims and token agreement. The expression of regret and counterclaims strategy served as the dominant strategies mostly expressed with the reason that they were common, easy and the most suitable strategy for disagreeing.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of the implementation of 3-2-1 strategy in teaching reading through online learning towards the eighth-grade students’ reading comprehension of SMP Negeri 4 Busungbiu. This study was an experimental research with Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. Two classes of the eighth-grade students in SMP Negeri 4 Busungbiu were selected as the sample of the study through cluster random sampling technique. Class VIII C was the experimental group which was taught reading through online learning by using 3-2-1 strategy, while class VIII A was the control group which was taught by using the conventional method. The pre-test and post-test data obtained in this study were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using SPSS 23.0. The result of the data analysis showed that the students in the experimental group performed better than the students in the control group after being given treatment. It was proven by the result of the descriptive analysis that showed the mean score of the experimental group (81.29) was higher than the mean score of the control group (69.81) in the post-test. Furthermore, the result of the independent sample t-test showed that the p-value of pre-test was 0.535 (> α = 0.05) and the p-value of post-test was 0.000 (< α = 0.05). Thus, it can be concluded that the implementation of 3-2-1 strategy gave a significant effect on the eighth-grade students’ reading comprehension achievement of SMP Negeri 4 Busungbiu.

Abstract

As popular tourist sites, Malang and Batu in East Java are multicultural and multilingual in nature with at least local languages and national language being used on a daily basis. With globalization and growing markets for business, contacts among their citizens create captivating language/ linguistic landscapes. Many previous research have focused on the vitality and salience of language representations in signboards and discussed the impacts they have on the sociolinguistic reality of the people. This current study, however, explores the bilingual/ multilingual play of the languages used in shop signs in these cities and the possible effects they create. Of 88 signboards under investigation, lexical hybridization- Englishized spelling and hybrid compounding- and bilingual creativity at the syntactic level were the most used strategies. Other textual processes which were commonly found in the signboards are bilingual punning, bilingual rhyming, and mock Englishization. The semantic feature was commonly used as the complementary relationship between language and the content. Effects of these creative processes are projecting modernism, sophistication, association with the international market, ludic effect as an attention-getter, and facilitating memorization.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find a correlation between students’ anxiety level and their relation to speaking performances, a quantitative research design using correlation method was used in conjunction with SPSS software to determine the connection between both variables. The method of anxiety data collection was accomplished through online FLCAS questionnaires with participants from English Education major learners from Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik in the fourth semester, all which would be then correlated to their final speaking score provided by the lecturer. The result found that there is a significant correlation between EFL Anxiety and students’ speaking performances with r= -.702 and p= .000. Therefore, it can be claimed that N0 was rejected while Na was accepted. When compared to results from previous studies on anxiety from non-English department, this shows that anxiety also negatively affect learners who enrolled in English specialized major, and not limited to learners who need to participate English lesson in compulsory class.
