Abstract

This study aims to analyze the empty space in Joko Pinurbo’s poetries with Iser's reception theory, especially the concept of unbesthimmheit (empty space), which can be filled by interpreting the text based on the reader's repertoire. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The analysis is carried out by identifying the repertoire, empty space, filling the empty space, actualizing meaning, and interpreting the aesthetic effect. The results of the study are: 1) visual form, titimangsa, and diction are clues that refer to the repertoire, namely religious practices in Indonesia in 2015-2016, 2) empty space in the form of metaphorical ambiguity and the absence of explanation of causal relations in the text, 3) empty space is filled with SARA conflicts and identity polarization, especially the case of Ahok and Meiliana as defendants in blasphemy, 4) aesthetic interpretation in the form of reflection on religious practices that are trapped in rituals so that they are vulnerable to intolerance, the solution is the actualization of love for others.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of mimicry and indigenous resistance portrayed in Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind) by Pramoedya Ananta Toer through a postcolonial perspective. Grounded in Homi K. Bhabha’s theory of mimicry, the research investigates how colonial subjugation shaped the emergence of cultural resistance among indigenous characters. Employing a qualitative textual analysis with a dialectical approach, the study proceeds through three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that mimicry operates as an ambivalent cultural strategy—simultaneously reproducing and undermining colonial authority. Four distinct forms of resistance emerge as the characters negotiate identity, agency, and autonomy under colonial domination. These forms demonstrate that mimicry functions not merely as imitation but as a subversive act of decolonial affirmation and identity reconstruction. The study contributes to postcolonial literary scholarship by situating Bumi Manusia within the broader discourse of decolonization and cultural hybridity in Southeast Asian literature. It also offers a localized understanding of subaltern resistance that enriches global discussions on the intersections of power, culture, and postcolonial subjectivity.

Abstract

This study aims to describe differences in effective reading speed between fiction and nonfiction texts among eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 5 Ukui using a descriptive quantitative approach. Data were collected through reading speed tests and comprehension tests based on cognitive aspects of reading literacy. Data analysis employed a paired t test. The results showed that students’ effective reading speed in nonfiction texts, with an average score of 124.33, was higher than in fiction texts, which averaged 119.14. These findings indicate that text type significantly influences students’ reading ability, and teachers are encouraged to provide balanced and intensive practice.
