Abstract

Meliponiculture emerged at Tanjung Sari, a village in Kepulauan Meranti Regency, Riau Province, in 2016 and has been growing thereafter. According to our observations there were at least three main obstacles faced by colony owners at this village, i.e. colony loss, low honey production, and marketing-related issues. We attempted to address these issues through a participatory program involving colony owners of the village. Colony loss had been mainly caused by swarming and mortality and was believed to have been triggered by inappropriate conditions of the maintenance (such as too much exposure to the sun and rain as well as unrepelled diturbances by other animals. Such conditions had also been associated with low honey production. Therefore we encouraged villagers to improve the conditions by providing supporter and roof for their colonies. In regard with marketing issues, we encouraged villagers to establish a honey cooperative under BUMDES, which should regulate honey price, absorb the produced honey, and also handle its marketing to outer counterparts. In addition, the cooperative should facilitate communications between members and information disemination, and mediate negotiation with potential buyers. The benefits gained by participants were: (1) the improvement of technical knowledge of colony maintenance; (2) the improvement of colony maintenance quality that would reduce risk of colony loss; and (3) the establishment of a cooperative that would be a body that would facilitate the necessities previously mentioned. The present paper describes the processes and results in details.

Abstract

The sago business in the Bagan Melibur Village has been around for a long time, but has not provided welfare for the community. So far, the processing of sago sandal is still in the traditional way, namely the direct drying process under the hot sun and the human-powered sago processing process, so that the production period is quite long and the results obtained are less. For this reason, this service has the aim of developing the potential of the Bagan Melibur village community in managing sago into various kinds of processed foods and beverages, one of which is a dry sago sandal (celsring). To be able to speed up the celsring processing process, it is necessary to use tools such as ultraviolet housings, so that the drying process can be carried out under any conditions. This tool can speed up the production period and production results. This community service was carried out in the Bagan Melibur Village, Merbau District, Meranti Islands Regency uses the extension method. Based on the service activities carried out, the Celsring product brand is produced which is ready to be marketed outside the Bagan Melibur area.

Abstract

The synergy of partnerships between Universitas Riau and business/industry actors in the region is important to be carried out in line with the tridharma of higher education at the point of community service. Among the industries and food businesses that are developing in the city of Pekanbaru, many of them are in the form of IRT which are still very simple in terms of capital, products produced, marketing methods and limited access to standardize their products. In order to be able to develop their business activities properly, and to be able to increase the income of the IRT, it is necessary to take steps and strategies for business development based on the conditions and problems faced. The method of application carried out in this service is assistance for IRT in branding and packaging as well as digital/online marketing of IRT products to improve product quality; foster business management skills in an effort to increase production capacity; and assistance in the legality of IRT products, as well as obtaining a Halal Certificate.
