Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital platforms has generated unprecedented access to religious content, while simultaneously producing information overload, misinformation, and competition with non-beneficial content. This condition raises critical questions regarding how da’wah actors adapt their strategies and how Generation Z interprets religious messages within a saturated digital environment. The study aims to analyze the orientation, challenges, and strategic adjustments of contextual da’wah targeting Generation Z. A qualitative approach was employed using in-depth interviews with selected preachers and members of Generation Z, complemented by document analysis of digital da’wah content. Data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns in media use, message construction, and audience reception. The findings indicate that digital da’wah has shifted from a one-way transmission model to a dialogical and participatory format. Preachers actively utilize social media to create interactive spaces that connect Islamic teachings with the everyday realities of Generation Z. However, they face significant challenges related to algorithmic visibility, misinformation, and the dominance of entertainment-driven content. Effective strategies emphasize message clarity, contextual relevance, and value-based engagement without compromising core Islamic principles. These results demonstrate that generational context and digital infrastructures substantially reshape the orientation and practice of contemporary da’wah.

Abstract

This study addresses the persistent gap between technological transformation and the substantive realization of public service broadcasting in Indonesia’s digital television transition. Although digital migration has expanded multiplexing capacity and channel availability, it remains unclear whether these developments have strengthened the public service mandate of Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI). The research aims to examine how TVRI utilizes digital multicasting infrastructure to diversify channels, enhance content quality, and fulfill its public service obligations. This study employs a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with key institutional actors, policy analysis of broadcasting regulations, and systematic observation of TVRI’s digital channel programming. The analysis focuses on institutional capacity, regulatory frameworks, and patterns of content diversification and accessibility. The findings indicate that digitalization has significantly enhanced TVRI’s technical capacity, particularly in multiplexing management and channel expansion. However, this technical advancement has not been accompanied by a proportional transformation of content strategy. Channel diversification remains limited, accessibility features are inconsistently implemented, and educational specialization has not materialized as a dedicated service. Regulatory gaps and chronic budgetary constraints further restrict institutional innovation. The study concludes that technological migration alone is insufficient to achieve public service objectives without coherent governance reform, sustainable funding, and clear digital content mandates.

Abstract

The rise of digital da'wah has shifted religious learning for Generation Z to online platforms, but a clear understanding of their content preferences remains a research gap. This study employed a quantitative approach using conjoint analysis to map these preferences, particularly regarding the concept of da'wah with material on happiness. Data were collected from 180 valid student respondents (Gen-Z) and analyzed to evaluate a combination of four attributes: da'wah character, da'wah material, method, and digital media. The results revealed a definitive hierarchy of preferences, with da'wah material being the most determining factor (importance value: 36.178), followed by media (30.538), method (16.999), and da'wah character as the least influential (16.285). Audiences showed a strong preference for content on concrete social relationships, such as being a dutiful child (utility: 0.057) and having a good partner (0.026), and preferred thematic and advice-based methods over discussion. These findings fundamentally challenge the prevailing influencer-based marketing paradigm, demonstrating that for this demographic, the substance of the message is more important than the persona of the messenger. The study concludes that effective digital da'wah requires a strategic shift toward message-centric management, prioritizing practical, solution-oriented content delivered by competent and inspiring figures.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital communication has intensified the circulation of religious content on social media, while simultaneously increasing exposure to misinformation. In this context, digital literacy and media trust are assumed to play a decisive role in shaping students’ engagement in digital da’wah. However, limited empirical research has examined the combined influence of these variables within an integrated framework. This study aims to analyze the partial and simultaneous effects of digital literacy and media trust on university students’ interest in conducting da’wah through Instagram. This research employed a quantitative correlational design. The sample comprised 75 students from the Islamic Communication and Broadcasting Study Program at IAIN Kendari and at Muhammadiyah Mataram University. Data were collected using a structured Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed through multiple linear regression. The findings indicate that both digital literacy and media trust have positive, statistically significant effects on students’ interest in digital da’wah. Digital literacy emerged as the strongest predictor. Simultaneously, both variables explain 56% of the variance in students’ interest (R² = 0.560; p < 0.001), demonstrating substantial explanatory power. These results confirm that cognitive competence and affective trust jointly shape students’ participation in social media-based religious communication. This study contributes to the development of Islamic Broadcasting Communication by providing an integrative empirical model. Practically, it underscores the importance of strengthening digital literacy and fostering credible media environments to support responsible and active digital da’wah among university students.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the intersection of the metaverse, Muslim identity, and the risks of radicalization in the context of digital religious communication. The central research questions are: (1) What metaverse platforms do Muslim communities employ for religious practices and communication? (2) How is the representation of muslim identity in virtual spaces? (3) What radicalization risks and recruitment strategies emerge? Methodologically, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Data were collected from reputable journal databases, leaving 68 studies for synthesis. The findings demonstrate that Muslim communities utilize various digital platforms for daʿwah, ritual practices, and the expression of identity. The platforms include mainstream social media as well as immersive environments based on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). The utilization of these platforms also presents a potential risk of radicalization through algorithmic amplification. Such risks manifest as avatar manipulation and identity forgery. Gaming ecosystems are equally exploited to facilitate extremist grooming. The metaverse provides opportunities to enhance religious communication; however, it also introduces vulnerabilities that require careful attention and mitigation.

Abstract

Tourism villages are promoted as a community-based rural development strategy in Indonesia, yet participatory communication practices vary despite similar policy frameworks. This study examines: (1) how individual characteristics influence participatory communication; (2) how media exposure affects participatory communication; and (3) how stakeholders’ roles shape participatory communication in Alamendah and Cibiru Wetan Tourism Villages. Using a post-positivist paradigm and a mixed-methods Sequential Explanatory design, quantitative data from 77 respondents in each village were analyzed using PLS-SEM and complemented with in-depth interviews. he study compares Alamendah Tourism Village, which represents a dialogical–relational governance model characterized by strong local leadership and embedded collective reflection, and Cibiru Wetan Tourism Village, which represents a procedural–operational model marked by institutional integration and centralized coordination. The findings demonstrate that individual characteristics and stakeholders’ roles significantly influence participatory communication in Alamendah but not in Cibiru Wetan, while media exposure shows no significant effect in either case. The results indicate that participatory communication is determined less by structural strength or media intensity and more by how communicative authority and dialogical spaces are distributed and institutionalized in governance practices. Conceptually, the study highlights a relational understanding of participatory communication, emphasizing dialogical space and institutionalized reflection as core determinants of participatory depth.
