Abstract

This study aims to critically analyze the female identity discourse articulated by the Indonesian Muslim Women’s magazine. Preceded by the emergence of a significant problem during the process of modernization, Indonesia has experienced the transformation of religious values from ideology toward commercialization of spirituality reflected in their lifestyle. The constellation of media discourse creates a meaning transformation on how identity is performed and how a Moslem is in contemporary Indonesia. This study applies a discourse analysis perspective by Michael Foucault. The data were gathered from a collection of visual and textual discourse obtained from three Moslem women’s magazine, Alia, Ummi and Noor. The data analyzed include pictures, words, and phrases as a marker of female identity as a Moslem. The results of this study indicate that the female identity as a Moslem in Indonesia is not an absolute thing. Even though the teaching is from the same scripture, the interpretation of female identity, its nature and its realm becomes plural as there was a lot of discussion and arguments Permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v45i12017p086

Abstract

Personal names are considered “specific words”and thus most often kept untranslated. However, as translation theory has developed, making it not only changing language features but also mediating cultural aspects, personal names are reconsidered in translation. Since they are culturally bound, this study aims to find out, when personal names are translated, what translation strategies apply and why. The data were collected from the weekly comic Donal Bebek (2018) as well as from the Hunger Games trilogy novels written by Suzanne Collins (2008, 2009, 2010) and translated by Hetih Rusli (2009, 2010, 2012). The findings show that translating personal names in children literature can be more complicated than translating thosein literature for older readers. This study has found out that four strategies (preservation, naturalization, couplet, and adaptation) are used to approach the personal names translation for the children literature; and only two strategies (preservation and literal translation) are applied to the translation of those in young adult literature. Reasons for using such strategies are as follows: several aspects (such as connotation, pronunciation, and style) have been considered when translating personal names in children literature, while they are more flexible when translating personal names in young adult literature.

Abstract

Poetry can help students become more sensitive to language. However, in an EFL situation students may object to learning poetry. Thus, English teacher should know how to use poetry in their teaching. The teacher should also let the EFLlearners not feel worry about understanding poetry because not all poems are difficult. Moreover, what matter most is learning English through poem and not to learn about the poem itself. In short, it is suggested for EFL English teachers to have the learners explore some poems and write ones. Poetry gives abundant languageexposures that improve students’ language sensitivity and students’ creativity in using their English.

Abstract

EXPLORING FEMALE GHOSTS IN INTAN PARAMADITHA’S SIHIR PEREMPUAN: A STUDY ON FEMININITY CONSTRUCTIONAbstract: Ghost stories as myth have been around for hundreds of years, both in oral or written forms. Literature has provided a space for urban legend. The most popular and legendary ghosts are usually female ghosts. These female ghosts appear not only to represent ghosts but they also carry certain feminine values from the authors. This study aims to investigate female ghosts on Sihir Perempuan, a collection of short stories written by Intan Paramaditha using feminist construction approach. Cixous’ (2008) theory of feminist writing and an approach to shift to the center are used as the study’s conceptual framework. The findings of this study include a paradox in the way Intan Paramaditha reconstructs femininity. In the effort of  building femininity, female ghosts are portrayed as legends within patriarchal cultural power. The presence of female ghosts explores female bodies and psychology. Keywords: female ghost, femininity, ghost story, myth, patriarchyEKSPLORASI HANTU PEREMPUAN DALAM SIHIR PEREMPUAN KARYA INTAN PARAMADITHA: TELAAH KONSTRUKSI FEMININITASAbstrak: Cerita hantu sebagai sebuah mitos telah dikonsumsi publik sejak ratusan tahun yang lalu, baik secara lisan maupun tulisan.

Abstract

This article is aimed at elaborating not only the students’ reading comprehension  based on international test and local test conducted for elementary school students, grade four but also the corelation of both results. This descriptive research was conducted at 12 elementary schools at 5 provinces located in Java and Sumatra. The instruments used for reading comprehension test were PIRLS, an international test and the researcher-made test. The result of the study shows that the fourth graders’  ability in comprehending  the texts is very low. They could  only understand 30% of the reading texts, both informative and literary texts. The result of the international tests have a very high corelation with the result of the researcher- made test, though it shows lower result than the result of local tests.

Abstract

Nowhere and everywhere: Navigating gendered urban spaces in Haruki Murakami’s After DarkUrban space has been one of the most underexplored elements analyzed in literary works. However, as urban space gradually emerges as a culturally influencing element, a casual perusal of any text that employs urban space might result in an oversimplified analysis. This study examines the urban space of After Dark (2004), authored by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami (b. 1949). Accounting for the ways urban space is interwoven with the socio-cultural context, this study establishes a spatial reading of Murakami’s After Dark through the description of the city. With a poststructuralist approach, this study discusses how urban space is utilized and how it serves as an important part of the text instead of a mere backdrop; it reinforces the possibilities of setting as a thematic approach to major issues such as self-identity and the marginalization of women. As it is concluded, the urban space the novel presents have succeeded to show that they form, to some extent, women’s behaviours both directly and indirectly. Hence, the setting may present the main theme further analysed.

Abstract

The post-reading stage of a reading lesson is often confused with the clos- ing of a lesson. However, having new information from the whilst-reading  stage should bring about a change such as the students would know more, or think or feel differently from before. Teachers should help students connect the new information they are now familiar with and their lives.  This article re-introduces the importance of the post-reading stage and some workable, meaningful activities. Interactive ac- tivities are chosen so that students not only process their knowledge obtained from the text but also communicate this new knowledge to peers

Abstract

The study reported in this paper aims to analyze the possible strategies used in the subtitling of the first five episodes (season 1) of Friends to render the episodes’ humorous dialogues. It examines the subtitler’s strategies in preserving both the semantic and humorous genes of laughter intended by the original humor. The analysis takes into account the internal and external structures of humors both in the target and source language. Choosing a subtitling strategy involves a decisionmaking process where the internal and external factors come into play and, therefore, rendering humors in a contextually bound medium, such as subtitling, does not necessarily work in the TL environment in a consistent manner. The inconsistency highlights the fact that humors, even those considered universal, are not digested in the same manner across cultures. Permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v44i22016p188
