Abstract

The success of dakwah as communication activities emphasizing on religious behavior transformation into the society, cannot be separated from the aspects of the language. Islam has taught us about the universal language of dakwah, as mentioned in the Qur'an. Dakwah language based on the Qur'an is characterized by saying something good so that it can imprint on the audience soul. Moreover, it must be a wise, a kind, an easy to understand and sacred words. This paper discusses the organization of dakwah language based on the Qur'an by taking communication strategies that are relevant to its contexts. The use of contextualization in this study means that the activities must consider its situation, including: "who speak, what language, to whom, and to what end". The dakwah method described is expected to improve the effectiveness of dakwah so that religious behavior is successfully transformed into the society

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the translation of English passive sentences into Indonesian language, in terms of the meanings and equivalence which appear in the translation. The method used to analyze the data is a descriptive quantitative. The sample of this research is taken from five chapters of the novel Hunger Games: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. The result shows that the translation of passive sentences comes into several types of meanings: lexical meaning 37%, grammatical meaning 2%, textual meaning 5%, and contextual meaning 46%. The translation of passive sentences also falls into two types of equivalences: formal equivalence 35% and dynamic equivalence 60%. However, 5% belongs to no equivalent translation. In conclusion, the English passive sentences are mostly translated contextually so that the type of equivalence mostly appeared is dynamic equivalence. Hence, inventive ability, creativity, and experience are required to grasp the exact meaning of source text

Abstract

This article describes the integration of media-and-material development tasks in an Extensive Reading: Folk & Fairy Talescourse. Fifty-eight students were instructed to write reflection from their experience in performing reading and media-and-material development tasks. The results revealed that practical application of teaching reading by using materials for young learners was the most important thing they learned from the class. Moreover, most of the students reported that their creativity in media and material development, skills of story telling, and summarizing had been rehearsed while performing the tasks. Also, the tasks of reading and media-and-material development worked well for most of them; nevertheless, some students viewed making caterpillar as an excessive task. Meanwhile, the issues raised from the students were mostly about standard of scoring, act upon plagiarism, and their unhappiness on the caterpillar task. Thus, clear description of assessment and omission of caterpillar task were suggested for future practice

Abstract

THE QUALITY OF TRANSLATION RESULTS BY GOOGLE TRANSLATE AND MICROSOFT TRANSLATOR IN TRANSLATING CLASSICAL ARABIC TEXTS BASED ON THE TRANSLATION OF THE BOOK MATN AL-GHĀYAH WAT TAQRIB BY FAIZ EL MUTTAQINAbstract: This study aimed to describe the quality of translations results by Google Translate and Microsoft Translator in translating classical Arabic texts based on the translation of the book Matn Al-Ghāyah wat Taqrib by Faiz El Muttaqin by looking at three aspects in the target language; accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The data of this study were analyzed using comparative qualitative research methods. The results showed that Google Translate got a better score than Microsoft Translator. However, both of them produced inaccurate, unacceptable and illegible translations because machine translation cannot properly communicate the meaning and dynamics of the source language into the target language.Keywords: Machine translation, Translation quality, Google translate, Microsoft translatorKUALITAS HASIL TERJEMAH GOOGLE TRANSLATE DAN MICROSOFT TRANSLATOR DALAM PENERJEMAHAN TEKS KLASIK BAHASA ARAB BERDASARKAN TERJEMAHAN KITAB MATN AL-GHĀYAH WAT TAQRIB KARYA FAIZ EL MUTTAQIN Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan kualitas hasil terjemahan google translate dan microsoft translator dalam penerjemahan teks klasik bahasa Arab berdasarkan terjemahan kitab Matn Al-Ghāyah wat Taqrib karya Faiz El Muttaqin, dengan melihat tiga aspek dalam bahasa sasaran yaitu keakuratan, keberterimaan, dan keterbacaan. Data penelitian ini dianalisis menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif komparatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa google translate memperoleh skor yang lebih unggul daripada microsoft translator. Kendati demikian, keduanya sama-sama menghasilkan terjemahan yang tidak akurat, tidak berterima dan tidak terbaca karena mesin penerjemahan tidak bisa mengkomunikasikan makna dan dinamika bahasa sumber ke dalam bahasa sasaran dengan benar.Kata kunci: Mesin penerjemah, Kualitas, terjemahan, Google translate, Microsoft translator  الملخص:  تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تحليل جودة نتائج ترجمة مترجم جوجل و مترجم مايكروسوفت في ترجمة النصوص العربية الكلاسيكية بناءً على ترجمة كتاب المتن الغاية والتقريب للفائز المتقين، من خلال النظر إلى ثلاثة جوانب في اللغة المستهدفة وهي الدقة والمقبولية وسهولة القراءة. في هذه الدراسة، تم تحليل البيانات باستخدام الطريقة النوعية المقارنة. أظهرت النتائج أن نتائج مترجم جوجل أفضل من مترجم مايكروسوفت. ومع ذلك ، فقد أنتج كلاهما ترجمة غير دقيقة و غير مقبولة و غير واضحة لأنهما لا يستطيعان توصيل معاني و ديناميات مصادر البيانات بشكل صحيحة إلى اللغة المستهدفة الكلمة المفتاح: آلة الترجمة ، جودة ، ترجمة ، مترجم جوجل ،

Abstract

This study aims to describe and explain the laku among  utterance in the classs discourse. Laku Among speech act is a natural phenomenon of language use in social  and  cultural  among  contexts.  To  explain  the  phenomena,  ethnographic research was used based on the structure of classroom communication. The result of the study shows that there are three findings of using laku among utterances in the classroom, they are ing ngarsa, ing madya, tut wuri handayani in the initial, middle and final speech acts in the classroom discourse

Abstract

The research aims at reviewing the symbolic violence in mass media. The aspect of symbolic violence to be reviewed includes (a) the forms, (b) strategies, and (c) effects of symbolic violence to the reader. The research uses critical discourse analysis  design  developed  by Fairclough.  The  result  of data  analyses  found  the realization of symbolic violence in the news text, in form of (a) blurred meaning, (b) bias logics, and (c) bias value. The blurred meaning, bias logics, and bias value as form of bias information in news text. The strategies of symbolic violence found in this research are (a) the softening of information, (b) information reasoning (logic), and (c) creating positive information. The effects of symbolic violence to the readers is seen in receptions of the information from the mass media includes (a) reception based on prejudice attitude and view and (b) reception based on neutral attitude. Abstract

 إن تفاعل اللغة العربية مع غيرها يؤدي إلى تغيرها وتطورها لا سيما بسبب متطلبات تطور العلوم والتكنولوجيا وانتشارها في العالم، ومن ظواهر تغيرها وتطورها الجلية ازدياد مفرداتها الجديدة من اللغات الأخرى التي تعتمد على سبيل التعريب في ترجمة بعض المفردات الأعجمية . يهدف هذا المقال إلى تقديم أنماط التعريب على المفردات الأعجمية. وتثبت نتائج البحث أن هناك تغييرات في رسم الحروف الكتابي بعضها على أساس الحروف الأبجدية التي لها مقابلاتها في العربية والباقي على أساس النطق أي إلى أقرب الحروف مخرجا إذا لم تكن نظائرها فيها.

Abstract

Gentle, polite, courteous, systematic, organized, clear, and straight forward use of language reflects a speaker’s personality and culture. Everyone, including the members of the South Sulawesi Parliament, is expected to maintain good manner and ethic in communication. The study aims to describe and explain declarative, interrogative, and imperative forms as well as speech act strategies used by the members the South Sulawesi Parliament. The qualitative study employed the functional approach on language. The study was conducted in the South Sulawesi Parliament House.  The data of the research were obtained from speech acts, field observations and interviews.   The stages of data collection are 1. Preparation, 2. Recording, 3. Observation, 4. Interview, and 5. Transcription. The data were analyzed by the following procedures: 1. data reduction, 2. data presentation and interpretation, and, 3. data conclusion and verification. The findings revealed that there were various forms of politeness used by the respondent. Moreover, the locution act was the more dominant strategy used by the respondent than the illocutionary act.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to describe the morphological and phonological varying system of Gorontalo language, and its problem in organizing them in custom terms dictionary. The method used is qualitative with the data collection techniques involved observing, recording the language in a practical poem of the traditional ceremony, and other published books. The agreement of word-writing problems through workshop alignment and standardization are (1) deletion of sound y and w in certain words, (2) there is no unique phonetic symbols of apostrophe for glottal sound between two sequence vowels written side by side in a row, (3) selection of writing nt for the sound /ð/, (4) selection of particles mayi, mota, mola, mao, ma, ngo, o (for verb not for noun), hi, lo, de, dipo, ta, (5) selection of prefix po attached to the verbs, (6) variations of long and short vowels writing on certain phonemes.  permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v46i12018p008

Abstract

Short stories constitute parts of the Intermediate Reading course materials. This study aims at finding the students’ views towards (1) the themes, novelty, level of difficulty, and length of the stories; (2) the reading and questioning tasks; (3) the discussion mechanism, and (4) the potentials of the short stories and the discussion mechanism to improve their reading strategies. This study is a survey with a questionnaire and 25 repondents. The findings indicate that (1) 25 students (100%) like the themes, 22 students (88%) are new to the stories, 17 students (68%) can tolerate the level of difficulty, to 20 students (80%) the length of the stories suits the discussion time; (2) to 24 students (96%), the requirements to read the short stories and submit questions prior to the discussion make them more prepared for it; (3) to 25 students (100%), the discussion mechanism helps them understand the stories better; (4) to 23 students (94%), the short stories improve their reading strategies and, to 24 students (96%), the discussion mechanism also does.Keywords: short stories, materials, reading
