Abstract

Stunting, or short stature in children, remains a significant problem in GUO Kuranji Padang. To address this issue, Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (PHBS) have been implemented as a way to improve the quality of family life. PHBS encourages daily clean habits such as washing hands with soap, maintaining environmental hygiene, using healthy toilets, and consuming nutritious food. Through regular education and guidance, families in this area have begun to realize the importance of maintaining hygiene and good eating habits to prevent stunting. The involvement of community leaders and health cadres also helps to strengthen the sustainable implementation of PHBS. As a result, stunting rates have declined as children have become healthier and grown better. The PHBS program in GUO Kuranji shows that simple changes in habits can yield positive results. Continuous guidance and cooperation from all parties are essential for PHBS to become a permanent lifestyle that helps prevent stunting and improve the quality of community life

Abstract

This community service programme was implemented in Nagari Bukik Batabuah in response to the loss of livelihoods following the Mount Merapi disaster. The focus of the activities was on empowering the saka sugar farming group through innovations in food-grade silicone moulds, packaging techniques, digital marketing strategies, business licensing and halal labelling. Saka sugar, a culinary heritage of Minangkabau, has great potential to be developed into a high-value, environmentally friendly household product. The activity was carried out over three days through lectures and workshops, covering the empowerment of saka sugar mould making using safe and flexible food-grade silicone, modern packaging with informative labels, and social media and e-commerce-based marketing strategies. In addition, participants were guided in the process of obtaining business permits and halal certification through the OSS and SIHALAL platforms. The results of the activity showed an increase in the knowledge and skills of partners by ≥ 80–90%, as well as the formation of an Activity Management Unit (UPK) to manage the sugar cane business. This programme is expected to create attractive, safe, and highly competitive sugar cane products in local and international markets, as well as strengthen the cultural and economic identity of the Nagari Bukik Batabuah community

Abstract

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is a strategic plantation commodity in Indonesia, functioning as the primary raw material for sugar and traditional sweeteners such as gula saka. In Nagari Bukik Batabuah, West Sumatra, gula saka production holds economic, social, and cultural significance; however, product quality remains inconsistent, particularly due to inappropriate harvest timing and post-harvest handling. This study aims to examine the influence of sugarcane harvest period on the quality of gula saka produced by local farmers and traditional processors (pangilang saka). A descriptive qualitative approach was applied through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation, with informants selected using purposive sampling. The results indicate that harvest age and delays between harvesting and processing significantly affect the chemical composition of sugarcane juice, especially sucrose levels, reducing sugars, and phenolic compounds. Harvesting at an immature stage leads to low sugar yield and weak sweetness, while over-mature harvesting or delayed processing accelerates sucrose degradation, resulting in darker color and inferior flavor quality. These findings demonstrate that variations in gula saka quality are strongly associated with harvest management rather than processing methods alone. The study concludes that strengthening farmers’ capacity in determining optimal harvest timing and improving post-harvest practices is essential to enhance product quality, preserve local wisdom, and improve the sustainability of traditional sugarcane-based industries

Abstract

Biogas production as a renewable energy source has great potential in supporting energy security and environmental sustainability. This article discusses the optimization of biogas production through the application of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring system implemented by the Guo Mandiri Farmer Group in Kuranji Village, Padang. The IoT monitoring system enables real-time monitoring of fermentation conditions such as temperature, pH, and pressure, allowing for more efficient control of the production process. Continuous community assistance is an important factor in increasing technological management capacity and implementation success. The results show that the integration of this technology can significantly increase the volume and quality of biogas as well as strengthen the role of the community in the development of independent energy. This community service provides recommendations for the development of community-scale biogas through technology and participatory approaches for sustainability.

Stunting is a developmental disorder that occurs in children and toddlers. It usually occurs due to chronic malnutrition in the early period of a child's growth. Generally, children who suffer from stunting will look proportional, but when compared to children their age, they will look shorter or stunted. However, not all children who look short or stunted suffer from stunting. A child is said to suffer from stunting if their growth and development is below the standard growth curve according to WHO data. A child who suffers from stunting, growth and development is very poor, not only looks short or stunted, but his intelligence level decreases, speech disorders, and difficulties in learning later, besides that their immune system is lower so that it is easily infected with helminthiasis, viruses and bacteria. Furthermore, helminthiasis infection caused by poor PHBS will cause toddlers and children to suffer from stunting. Therefore, a comprehensive education is carried out about the aspects that cause stunting so that the community understands and understands why their toddlers and children are stunted. This community service was carried out in Pariangan District, Batusangkar Regency, West Sumatra. The results achieved in this educational activity are: definition and characteristics of stunting, impact, PHBS, the onset of helminthiasis and the impact of helminthiasis for toddlers and children and efforts made in preventing stunting itself.
