Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze family’s income and food sufficiency level. The total samples of 180 families were randomly selected, where 115 samples were the participant and 65 samples were non-participant families of PDM-DKE program in Bogor. The study was conducted in four-district areas (kelurahan) in Bogor City (kotamadya). Data analysis consists of descriptive and inferential statistics, such as Mann Whitney for difference’s test and Rank Spearman for correlation test. The results showed that family’s income and food sufficiency level were not significantly different between the two groups. The average income of participant families was Rp105.700 and the average income of non-participant families was Rp104.400. The sufficiency level of vitamin A at non-participant families is considered deficient (50%). The size of the family is negatively correlated with food sufficiency level of the two group sample families, while family’s income is positively correlated with food sufficiency level of the participant families. Housewives educational level and nutrition knowledge was tent to effect the food sufficiency level of the sample families. Keywords: food sufficientcy, income

Abstract

The general objective of the research was to study healthy life behavior of rural families and to determine its influential factors. Meanwhile the specific objectives were (1) to identify healthy life behavior of rural families, (2) to determine factors affecting the behavior, and (3) to formulate effort to improve the family healthy life behavior. The research was conducted in the sub-districts of Leuwiliang and Cibungbulang, Bogor, from February to December 1999. The population of the study was families at which the father and the mother present. It was 305 families involved in the study which consisted of 194 families from Leuwiliang Sub-district and 111 families from Cibungbulang Sub-district. Collected data consist of primary and secondary data. The researchers analyzed data descriptively and employed statistical method of multiple regression analysis. The study indicates that most respondents are categorized to have good knowledge (62,1%) and good attitude (97,4%) toward nutrition and health. Meanwhile, in term of practices of healthy life, 92,8 percent of respondents are classified as having moderate category. The score of knowledge tends to be influenced by the number of obtained information, wife educational attainment, and score of attitude and practice toward health and nutrition. The attitude toward nutrition and health is affected by the level of knowledge, and the practice of healthy life is influenced by the educational attainment and the knowledge toward health and nutrition. Based on the findings, the study suggests to develop extension programs about self-cleanliness, the required need of food and nutrition, particularly for pregnant mothers, home sanitation, and proper age of supplementary feeding. The programs are basically to increase the knowledge and awareness of the parents about healthy life behavior. In addition to that, it is necessary to conduct assistance programs in tile (cement) flooring, family toilet making, air ventilation renovating, and healthy-clean water supplying. Keywords: healthy life behavior, nutrition knowledge an attitude

Abstract

The specific objectives of this research were to study food consumption; iodine and selenium content of foodstuffs; intake of nutrients (energy, protein, vitamin A, iodine and selenium); and status of iodine among elementary school children living in coastal areas of Pasuruan District, East Java Province. The study was also purposed to observe the correlation between nutrients consumption and iodine status. Kalirejo Village was chosen purposively to represent a non endemic area of IDD in which the Total Goitre Rate (TGR) was 45%, while Tambak Lekok Village represented a non endemic area of IDD with no cases of goiter signs. Sixty elementary school children in each area were randomly selected as samples to whom 24 hours food consumption recall and early morning urine were collected. Urinary Excretion of Iodine (UEI) was analysed from each sample to measure the status of iodine. Statistical method called t-test was applied to judge any difference between the data of consumption, nutrient adequacies, UEI level (iodine status) in both areas. Correlation between variables was also examined statistically by multiple linier regression test. For all kind of food of animal origins, samples living in IDD-non endemic area consumed more in term of quantity than that in IDD-endemic area. The adequacy levels for energy, protein, vitamin A, iodine and selenium in IDD-endemic area were 89.61%, 234.24%, 269.92%, 23.33% and 78.79% respectively; while those in IDD-non endemic area were 107.59%, 208.68%, 151.99%, 103.07% and 239.18% respectively. No significant (p>0.05) difference was observed between data of nutrients consumption, energy adequacy level and protein adequacy level obtained from an IDD-endemic area and those obtained from non endemic area. In contrast, consumption and adequacy level of vitamin A, iodine and selenium of IDD-endemic area were significantly different from those observed in IDD-non endemic area. Generally, iodine and selenium content of foodstuffs obtained from IDD-endemic area were lower than those from IDD-non endemic area. UEI of samples living in IDD-endemic area were 108,50 u/l. These was significantly different from those living in with non endemic area, which were 192 u/l. Consumption of energy, protein and vitamin A showed no significant influence on iodine status. Iodine and selenium consumption were very significantly influenced by iodine status. Iodine status was very significantly influenced by iodine consumption. Keywords: iodine, selenium, chool children

Abstract

The objectives of the study was to observe relationship between determinant parameters of iodine status and determinant parameter of selenium status among the elementary school children in determining IDD problem. The study was conducted in two villages of coastal area of Pasuruan, East Java Province using 24 samples in endemic area of IDD and 22 samples in non endemic area of IDD. Iodine status was measured based on urinary excretion of iodine (UEI) and thyroid hormones consentration (TSH, FT4, T3) while selenium status masured using selenium content of blood serum. The results of the study show that iodine status as measured by UEI and FT4 of samples living in endemic area (8,3% normal and 95,8% normal respectively) are statistically different from those in non endemic area (100% normal and 95,4% normal respectively) while iodine status as measured by TSH and T3 in endemic area (87,5% normal and 95,8% normal respectively) are not statistically different from those in non endemic area (100% normal and 100% normal respectively). The average selenium content in serum owned by samples in two areas are not statistically different. However if the data was classified based on normality categories, it is shown that samples in endemic area of IDD have lower category in selenium status (79,19%) compared to those in non endemic area of IDD (9,09%). There are significant correlation between T3 and FT4,, T3 and selenium content of serum, and between FT4 and selenium content of serum in non endemic area. The result of regression analyses of joined samples from endemic and non endemic areas showed that selenium content of serum and UEI were closely related to iodine and selenium intake (r=0,402 and r=0,510).Keywords: selenium, iodine status, school children

Abstract

Changes in lifestyle that influence food consumption and physical activity pattern tend to increase the prevalence of childhood obesity in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship of dietary and physical activity pattern with the development of primary obesity in children. This study was conducted to 122 school age children in Bandung municipality from May to July 2000. Obesity status was determined by body mass index (BMI) and weight for height (W-H) classifications. Interview was done to assess the dietary pattern i.e habitual dietary pattern (HD) and 24-hour dietary record (DR) and daily physical activity pattern, i.e. physical activity score (PAS) and energy expenditure (EE). According to BMI classification, there are 81 obese and 41 non-obese children. While by W-H classification, the number of obese and non-obese children is 47 and 75. The study shows that obese children consume more calorie than non obese, and significant difference found in calorie intake based on DR between non obese and obese according to BMI (p=0.026) and W-H (p=0.001). Macro nutrient intake based on HD and RD does not differ significantly between obese and non obese children according to BMI and W-H (p>0.05). Based on HD and BMI degree of obesity, fat is the most in-fluencing macronutrient (F=3.392;p=0.006) but according to W-H, calorie has more effects (F=2.557;p=0.042). While by 24-hour DR in the BMI as well as W-H classifications carbohydrate intake was the most related macronutrient. No significant difference was found in micro nutrient intake except for calcium intake by DR according to W-H classification (p=0.043). Physical activity pattern reveals that obese children have lower PAS than non-obese (p=0.000) and a significant negative correlation with BMI (r=0,615;p

Abstract

The purpose of this research was (1) to study the process of making carrot brem as an alternative source of b-carotene products, and (2) to study the chemical characteristics of carrot brem produced. The research was carried out during April-June 1999 at the Food Experimental Laboratory of Department of GMSK, Faculty of Agriculture IPB Bogor. Several levels of dextrin (27%, 30% and 33%) were added to the carrot juice to produce carrot brem in comparison to the addition of sticky rice to the carrot juice. The carrot brem produced was then analyzed for its chemical characteristics and was evaluated by 30 trained-panelist for its organoleptics performance. The results showed that that the addition of 30% dextrin had no significant effects (p>0,05). However, this level of dextrin had significant effects (p
