Abstract

This article explores the practice of integrated learning at a modern pesantren-based madrasa, i.e. Madrasah Aliyah Bilingual, Junwangi, Krian, Sidoarjo. Conventional teaching methods have been inadequate in providing enriching perspectives and enjoyable direct learning experiences. In contrast, integrated learning, which has become a trend in modern educational institutions, promotes a holistic and enjoyable learning experience. The article argues that integrated learning practices effectively help create a comprehensive cognitive framework for students, enabling them to understand and construct interrelated concepts. Through this modality, students are expected to develop the ability to identify, associate, evaluate, and meaningfully use available information. This article employs qualitative research based on field studies, with data analysis including data display, data condensation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the integrated learning practice at this madrasa implements two models simultaneously: the spider-web model and the integration model. Both models are effective and efficient in supporting the integrated learning process in a school within a pesantren culture.

Abstract

Arabic historically served as Nigeria’s primary language for literacy, official documentation, and trade, notably within the Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State. This study evaluates the role of the Arabic language in sustaining local Arabic education and examines the quality of teachers, curriculum, teaching methods, materials, and the learning environment. Despite its academic significance, Arabic is often mistakenly viewed as solely religious, hindering its educational progress. Utilizing a quantitative approach, the study gathered data through a questionnaire distributed among teachers and students across 10 purposively selected schools. The findings indicate that most respondents approve of the current curriculum and the integration of ICT, noting more effective modern methodologies in private schools. However, discrepancies exist between the learning environments of public and private schools. Findings reveal that 70% of respondents believe the current Arabic curriculum is suitable, while 80% agree that ICT integration has greatly contributed to effective teaching and learning. Also, 72% of respondents indicate that private schools employ modern and appropriate methodologies more effectively than public schools. The study also highlights that 70% of respondents find the teaching environments conducive, although there are significant differences between public and private institutions.  The study concludes that private institutions are crucial in promoting Arabic education in Ilorin, though challenges like inadequate curricula and insufficient governmental support remain. Recommendations include curriculum re-evaluation, enhanced teaching resources, and better incentives to align Arabic education with national requirements, emphasizing its importance for Nigeria’s diverse developmental needs and advocating for strategic educational reforms.

Abstract

The Almajiri phenomenon is one of the pandemic matters affecting Muslims in the North, specifically Nigeria as a nation. It depicts a condition whereby children of school age, ostensibly enrolled to study under Mallams, roam about the streets in tattered clothes, begging, scavenging, and doing all sorts of odd jobs. While Islam places a high premium on education, emerging issues about The Almajiri system of education have heightened the need to re-examine the concept from the perspective of the essence, purpose, goal, and objective of Islamic law (Maqasid al-Shari’ah). To this extent, the practice of the Almajiri system of education as obtainable in Nigeria should be subjected to the balance of Maqasid as-Shari’ah to ascertain its acceptability and fecundity. This paper therefore attempts to assess and appraise the Almajiri educational system in Nigeria to reform its operation and recommend steps towards attaining the overall educational goals of Islam as enshrined in the Shari’ah. The researcher adopts both historical and narrative research methods in the work. This article finds a strong correlation between the Almajiri system of education and Maqasid as-Shari’ah.  The research concludes that there is a dire need for Nigerian Muslims to adopt the Maqasid as-Shari’ah as the guiding principle for the reformation and operation of the Almajiri educational system, particularly in the northern part of the country.
