Abstract

The burial of Jesus is an important aspect for Christian community to understand the meaning of salvation story. In his narrative on the burial of Jesus, John figure out three characters (Joseph of Arimathea, Pilate and Nicodemus) at the last moment of Jesus in specific way. Pilate who was fear of Jews still has authority, as the reference for Joseph of Arimathea to ask for permission in order to take the body of Jesus. In this exegetical study and narrative reading on John 19,38-42, I use the character study to approach the text as one-unit narrative. I will find out how a narrator uses setting, plot, rhetoric, and character to persuade the reader to adopt his evaluative point of view. I will argue that the burial of Jesus was the moment for them to declare themselves publicly as the true disciple of Jesus and risk their identity as Jews. By touching the death body, they made themselves impure for Jews feast, but they draw themselves near to the one who come to bring the eternal life.

Abstract

This research explores the ethical values contained in the Racang Ngi'is ceremony and elaborates on the concept of value according to Max Scheler. Racang Ngi'is is a coming-of-age ceremony for Riung-Flores women. Every Riung girl who is considered mature by custom and ready to build a household must go through the ceremony. However, currently the Racang Ngi'is ceremony is of less interest to both the younger generation and the Riung community. This is due to several factors including; firstly, no written sources were found about the procedures for performing the Racang Ngi'is ceremony. Secondly, the cost is quite prohibitive and thirdly the youth of Riung are more interested in foreign cultures. As a result, many girls married without performing the Racang Ngi'is ceremony first. The researcher used a qualitative method with a literature study approach related to writings that discuss the research theme and interviewed several sources as primary sources of research. The researcher also reviewed several articles that discussed the process of self-maturation in several regions such as Nagekeo, Sabu, and Bali as secondary sources. The researcher found that the Racang Ngi'is ceremony has four values contained in it, namely joy, social, belief and religious values. These values have a level or hierarchy of values from the lowest (joy) to the highest (religious).

Abstract

The reality of scandals involving priests in the Catholic Church has recently caused deep wounds to the Church. This fact also requires the Church to pay serious attention to the human formation of her priests. This study aims to retrace the human qualities of a priest that can contribute to the development of virtues necessary in his vocation and priestly ministry. By utilizing an analytical study of texts and various official Church documents, the authors seek to bring to the fore the main qualities that the Church requires and expects from a priest. As a result, firstly, the author finds that there is a correlation between the personal qualities of a priest and the development of the virtues required in the vocation and ministry of the priesthood. Secondly, the study also found that it is important for these human qualities to be shaped during the process of formation throughout life, so that they become virtues that are deeply rooted in a priest and his ministry.

Abstract

Modern human life is characterized by the centrality of the individual. The negative effect is that human attitudes tend to be individualistic or egoistic, which can erode the solidarity and altruist spirit of people who want to be friends for others. Thus, the challenge to become a true friend is self-sacrifice. This paper aims to show as an example that there are still people who dare to sacrifice for others. From his spirit people can learn and take inspiration. This research intends to answer the question of whether there are still people in this modern world who can be used as examples of true friends. The author uses a historical approach and theological reflection, as well as a qualitative method of literature study. The results of this study show that being a friend is not a gift from birth, but a natural ability that can be cultivated and learned, as well as a supernatural power that can be invoked in commitment and spiritual fervor.

Abstract

Abstract

In cases of serious and complex sexual abuse, the exercise of mercy raises serious controversies and problems regarding the justice that victims of sexual violence deserve. Merciful justice is the idea that under certain conditions it is justified to exercise mercy to the extent that it does more good than harm and does not cause injustice to the victim. Restorative justice, forgiveness, and reconciliation are conditions that allow for the exercise of merciful justice in cases of sexual abuse. Merciful justice is possible in sexual abuse cases when all three conditions are achieved (through long, complicated, and arduous stages and processes). This article offers the idea that the Dramatic Theology approach to purgatory helps to deepen the idea of merciful justice in specific cases of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. Keywords: Merciful Justice, Dramatic Theology, Purgatory, Restorative Justice, Forgiveness, Reconciliation.

Abstract

The church considers that the Eucharist and the daily life of Christians are an inseparable unity. Active participation in the Eucharist is not limited only to liturgical rituals alone but should also be reflected in the daily lives of Christians. In this study, the author aims to examine the significance of the Eucharist as lived by the faithful in receiving the body of Christ in everyday life. This study was conducted using quantitative methods to answer the research question: Does receiving the body of Christ help the faithful realize their faith in everyday life? Various questions were posed to respondents via Google Form. The results showed that in the Archdiocese of Palembang and the Archdiocese of Makassar, receiving the body of Christ has a significant impact on daily life. This sacrament fosters a sense of solidarity and togetherness among the faithful and even encourages active participation in social activities and community service. Thus, it is hoped that the results of this study will inspire the faithful in other dioceses to better appreciate the meaning of the Eucharist in everyday life.

Abstract

This study analyzes the Sabat Sebatatn marriage custom in Banua Simpakng and compares it with the marriage ceremony in the Catholic Church through a literature study approach. Through in-depth analysis of relevant texts and literature sources, the research illustrates the essential differences between the two marriage systems. The Sabat Sebatatn custom in the local cultural context of Banua Simpakng emphasizes family and community togetherness in a series of rituals rich in meaning. Catholic Church marriage, on the other hand, is spiritually oriented with an emphasis on spiritual commitment between the couple. This comparison provides insight into how marriage customs and religion co-exist in shaping marriage norms in society. By integrating a qualitative perspective and desk research, this study provides a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between local traditions and global religion in the context of marriage.

Abstract

The research study pays attention to the philosophical concept of ‘back to nature’ education according to Jean-Jacques Rousseau. His philosophical literature studies regarding educational ideas are contained in his famous work entitled “Emile” (1762) according to J.J Rousseau and his influence on the development of modern education. Specifically, for the implementation of the Independent Curriculum at the elementary school level in Indonesia today. In this research, the author uses a qualitative-descriptive method, namely describing the situation of implementing project-based learning in the Independent Curriculum in elementary schools and exploring Rousseau’s educational thoughts based on data obtained from literature studies. The theoretical framework is increasingly focused on Rousseau’s view of ‘back to nature’ education based on age groups; in this case it is childhood (2-12 years). As a result, the author found that the education pattern is a return to nature, meaning a return to human nature, where children as an educational subject should continue to improve their good educational competencies, specifically sensory development in childhood in line with the principles of a free and loving nature. This seems to be in line with the development of the Independent Curriculum which places children at the center of education so that they can learn freely, creatively with special skills in project-based and thematic learning programs, so that they can show their natural talents.

Abstract

Aristotle, in his Physics 2.4-9, argued that chance is an accidental cause, which he divided into two types: luck or fortune, which functions in the domain of practice, and the spontaneous, which operates in the natural world. He stated that both luck and the spontaneous are causes by accident and belong to the category of efficient causes. According to Aristotle, chance is considered a cause in the sense that people invoke it to explain what happens not only in the practical realm but also in the natural world. The fundamental question is how chance can be defined within the framework of the four causes. Chance is also rightly described as indefinite, obscure, and uncertain. Aristotle rejected the view held by some that chance is itself a cause - something unclear to the human mind, as if it were divine or a mysterious power. The problem is whether chance and fortune can be seen as causes and considered a fifth cause. This study examines how chance and fortune are neither a substantial reality nor merely a subjective notion; rather, they possess real and meaningful status as accidental causes. They are not additional causes but function within the schema of the four causes, particularly as substitutes in the realm of material explanation.
