Abstract

Environmental problems in urban areas, such as the degradation of air and water quality and poor waste management, which are largely caused by low ecological awareness among citizens. This study aims to describe the practice of Ecological Citizenship in urban communities, particularly RW 3 and RT 5 in Jambangan Subdistrict, Surabaya. A qualitative approach with a case study method was employed. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The study is based on two main theoretical frameworks: Andrew Dobson’s Ecological Citizenship and the Social Construction Theory of Peter L. Berger & Thomas Luckmann. The findings indicate that residents of Jambangan actively shape and practice ecological awareness through habitual behaviors and participation in environmental programs such as waste banks, urban farming, and integrated wastewater management. These practices are socially constructed through interaction local cultural values of mutual cooperation, and community participation. This research emphasizes the importance of integrating civic awareness and ecological responsibility as a foundation for sustainable environmental development.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ religious tolerance attitudes and their social interaction skills, as well as to analyze the relationship between the two among 11th-grade students at Nation Star Academy Senior High School Surabaya. This research employed a quantitative approach with a survey method. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and interviews involving 118 respondents selected using total sampling. Data analysis was conducted using Pearson's product-moment correlation with SPSS version 23. The findings show that students’ religious tolerance attitudes fall within the moderate to high category, with most students demonstrating respectful and appreciative behavior toward religious differences in their school environment. Students’ social interaction skills were also found to be strong, as reflected in their ability to communicate across faiths, collaborate in school activities, and resolve conflicts peacefully and inclusively. The analysis reveals a significant and very strong positive correlation between religious tolerance and social interaction skills, with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.934. This indicates that 93.4% of the variation in students’ social interaction skills can be explained by their level of religious tolerance. These results suggest that the higher the students’ religious tolerance, the better their social interaction abilities. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of fostering religious tolerance in educational environments as a fundamental component in shaping inclusive, harmonious, and socially competent students in a multicultural society.

Abstract

This article examines Mohammad Hatta's views on the implementation of Pancasila Democracy in Indonesia and the challenges it faces. Hatta believed that a healthy democracy should involve the active participation of the people and be oriented towards the welfare of the people. Although Pancasila as the foundation of the State contains strong basic values, current democratic practices are often neglected, resulting in public dissatisfaction and reducing the quality of democracy. This research used the literature review method to analyze 100 relevant scientific articles, and after selection, a few articles were obtained that became the focus of analysis. The results show that challenges such as dynastic politics, money politics, low political education, and inaccurate information dissemination contribute to the decline of Pancasila democracy. Therefore, it is important to reflect on the current practice of Pancasila Democracy to keep it in line with Hatta's values and the goals of justice and shared prosperity. Through the inclusive application of Pancasila principles, it is hoped that Indonesian democracy can overcome these challenges and increase public participation in the political decision-making process.

Abstract

Violence within educational institutions continues to be a significant problem in Indonesia, as it not only hampers the teaching and learning process but also infringes upon students’ rights to receive an education that is safe, comfortable, and respectful of their dignity. In response to this issue, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology enacted Regulation No. 46 of 2023 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Violence in Educational Environments. This study aims to explore how this regulation is implemented at SMA Negeri 1 Manyar, a prominent senior high school in Gresik Regency with a large and diverse student population. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis is based on George C. Edward III’s policy implementation model, which includes four components: communication, resources, disposition, and bureaucratic structure. The findings reveal that SMA Negeri 1 Manyar has carried out the policy through the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), the formation of a violence prevention team, the organization of awareness-raising activities, objective handling of reports, and regular monitoring. Despite these efforts, several challenges remain, such as the lack of a dedicated reporting mechanism and limited active participation from all members of the school community. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with discipline teachers and Guidance and Counseling teachers, and documentation. The number of informants in this study was five teachers, consisting of teachers who were members of the discipline team and Guidance and Counseling (BK) teachers. Data analysis using Miles and Huberman. The results of the study showed that teacher strategies in strengthening disciplined character include: (1) socialization of regulations (2) providing examples (role models), (3) surprise inspection and (4) giving warnings and appreciation. The supporting factors for this strategy are cooperation with law enforcement (Babinsa) and involvement between parents and community. Abstract

This study aims to analyse university students’ legal awareness of Smoke-Free Areas and the factors that influence it. Soekanto’s theory of legal awareness is employed to examine four key indicators, namely knowledge, understanding, attitude, and behaviour. In addition, his framework for factors influencing legal awareness encompasses the law itself, law enforcement, facilities and infrastructure, society, and culture. A descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method was employed. Data were collected through questionnaires using a snowball sampling technique, which yielded 57 respondents. Of these, 28 students were selected for in-depth interviews. The analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that students at Universitas Negeri Surabaya demonstrate inadequate legal awareness regarding the Smoke-Free Areas on campus, as reflected in their non-compliant behaviour. This condition is shaped by several contributing factors, including limited policy dissemination, weak supervision, inadequate supporting facilities, ineffective sanctions, peer influence, and the normalisation of smoking on campus. Therefore, strategic efforts are required to enhance legal awareness, including providing education, revising ambiguous regulations, enforcing strict sanctions, improving facilities such as designated smoking areas and monitoring posts, and cultivating a legal culture that supports the internalisation of legal norms in students’ actual behaviour.

Abstract

Tolerance in Cisantana Village is not a natural phenomenon, but rather the result of a complex social construction involving externalization, objectification, and internalization, as explained by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's theory. This study aims to analyze patterns of tolerant living as a form of social construction, identify the factors that shape and maintain practices of tolerance, and understand the community's interpretation of tolerance in Cisantana Village. A descriptive qualitative research method was used to explore and understand the tolerance constructed by the community of Cisantana Village in their daily lives, with a primary focus on data collection through literature review. The results of the study show that the externalization of tolerance in Cisantana Village is evident in everyday actions, such as the simultaneous sounding of the azan and church bells without disruption, and interfaith participation in the Seren Taun traditional ceremony. Even in times of grief, residents of various faiths pray according to their respective religious teachings, demonstrating the internalization of the spirit of inclusivity through social practices. Objectification occurs when tolerance practices become institutionalized social norms, evidenced by the presence of places of worship from various religions without discrimination, as well as the acceptance of households with different beliefs as a matter of course. Informal policies from community leaders and the village government that grant religious freedom, supported by the local culture of mutual cooperation, further legitimize the value of tolerance, making it widely accepted and passed down across generations. Internalization is reflected in individuals who accept the social reality of tolerance as part of their self-awareness. Children in Cisantana Village grow up with harmonious interfaith interactions, viewing differences as normal and not forming exclusive groups based on religion. Social symbols, such as religious attributes coexisting in celebrations, further reinforce the collective awareness that all religions teach goodness and that differences are part of divine plan. Thus, tolerance in Cisantana Village is the product of organized subjective dynamics, shaping an objective social reality that is passed down through generations..

Abstract

Tradition plays a very significant role as a social bond and a medium for character education. Values such as mutual cooperation, religiosity, tolerance, discipline, and responsibility are often reflected in various local traditions, such as Tumpeng Sewu in Banyuwangi. In its implementation, many young people still consider the tradition to be just an annual event and still lack the meaning of the existing character values. This study uses a descriptive analysis research method. Data from this study were obtained from interviews, observations and documentation. The informants in this study were the Head of Kemiren Village Customs and the Kemiren Village Community. The results of this study indicate that in the Tumpeng Sewu tradition there are two processions that are part of the tradition. The first is a series of traditional ceremonies before the Tumpeng Sewu tradition, including Mepe Kasur, Parade, Barong Kemiren and Torch Parade or Oncor, then continued with the implementation of the Tumpeng Sewu Tradition itself. Some of the meanings of the Tumpeng Sewu Tradition are as an expression of the village's gratitude to the Danyang Desa or ancestors. Then, as a symbol of brotherhood and strengthening the ties of friendship between the Kemiren community and the general public and as a symbol that the traditions of the ancestors have never been eroded by time, even though modernization is increasingly dominating at this time. The Tumpeng Sewu tradition can survive until now because the young people in Kemiren Village have a sense of caring and a very high sense of enthusiasm. This tradition will continue to exist because the tradition was born from the Kemiren community and is also one with the Kemiren community.
