Abstract

This article discusses how the Modern Jihadists used Mardin Fatwa of Ibn Taymiyyah as the basis of their ideology and actions. So this research presents its novelty with an explanation of how modern radicalism develops, Ibn Taymiyya’s fatwas which are used as the theological foundations of the radicals, and how Jihadists read Ibn Taymiyyah’s Mardin Fatwa to legitimate their actions. This qualitative research used the primary sources of Ibn Taymiyyah’s works and secondary sources from his students and the Taymiyyan studies as well to enrich the argument of the researcher to result in the conclusion that several statements are quoted and used by the Jihadists to legitimate their radical actions; Anti-Mongol Fatwas I, II, and III, as well as Mardin fatwa with erroneous interpretations and not in accordance with the context behind the issuance of the fatwa. Like Mardin fatwa, for example how radicals read peace and war zones by correlating Islamic government with dar al-silm and conventional government that is not based on Islamic law with dar al-ḥarb then consequently it must be fought as the radicalist did against Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. This is where the importance of understanding Ibn Taymiyyah’s text holistically, intertextually not partially so that it will obtain an understanding that is in accordance with -at least approaching - the original substance of the author.

Abstract

As a religious phenomenon, pilgrimages have varying orientations. The diversity of orientations is determined by the level of motivation and meaning of the symbols attached to the pilgrimage. The connection between exposure and awareness of pilgrimage becomes the basis for pilgrims to interpret deeper aspects. The problem that arises later is the axiological interpretation of pilgrimage. In this reflective and theoretical study, the data was collected through in-depth reading about the pilgrimage of currently available academic literature. By applying philosophical analysis, the following article seeks to trace the most profound meaning of pilgrimage for creating positive interfaith relations. This study concludes that the most profound aspect of pilgrimage consciousness is archetypes that explain the uniformity of the spirit of pilgrimage carried out by the people of the religions. With that archetype, interfaith relations are easy to build because of the awareness of humanity and the apparent solidarity among religious adherents

Abstract

Studies on immigrant groups in Indonesia have been increasingly carried out by academics since the arrival of refugees from conflict areas to Indonesia as a transit point to a country that is responsive to immigrants. One of the issues of his study is the Rohingya Muslims. As refugees with Islamic religious identities, their existence is interesting to examine from the perspective of religious communities around the refuge. This study was conducted in the Aceh, Medan, and Makassar regions as the places most visited by Rohingya Muslim groups. This research uses a qualitative approach with case studies. This is intended to be able to map how the response of religious communities to the existence of Rohingya Muslims. The main finding is that the existence of Rohingya Muslims in the three regions has different responses given by various people around them. The cultural basis and religious relations are decisive. In Aceh, strong religious relations resulted in a different response for Rohingya Muslims compared to those in Medan and Makassar, whose backgrounds were more diverse. The location of the comparison is that in Aceh the response based on ukhuwah Islamiyah is more dominant, while in Medan and Makassar the humanitarian response and a firm line of state identity are important signs in responding to the existence of Rohingya Muslims. This response interaction results in acculturation as well as stigmatization

Abstract

The regulation of veil restriction at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, and its ensuing controversy, is a significant and meaningful event. The symbolic significance of the veil reflects identity problems, power dynamics, and disparities in religious, social, and political perspectives. This article analyses the ongoing power relations and practices underlying narrative discourse by collecting data in the mass media from February to April 2018. Using discourse analysis and Michel Foucault's Genealogy theory, the data was analyzed. The result shows; first, the case of the veil restriction at UIN Jogja is massive and phenomenal that it reflects the context of PTKI and even contemporary Indonesian Islam. Second, the cadres’ debate is replete with discourse contestation between opposing ideological factions, demonstrating the tight connection between knowledge and power. Third, it demonstrates the increasingly diversified form of contemporary Islam in Indonesia. Finally, this article helps to understand the dynamics of current Islamic thought, notably in PTKI, and the challenges of democracy in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study attempts to reveal the elite concept from Antonio Gramsci's thought which supports elite studies in an Islamic perspective, by using library research methods. The elite according to Gramsci is a social category that is not related to class but related to hegemony. Hegemony is a winning power that is obtained through a consensus mechanism rather than through violence or oppression of other social classes. The regime spreads hegemonic power of influence because it is supported by related infrastructure organizations, namely in which intellectual obedience is supposed to occur due to cultural and political factors. This is where elites emerge which are categorized into two according to Gramsci, namely organic elites (politicians, bureaucrats, academics) and traditional elites (subject to authorities). Elites in Islam bring consequences or impacts by showing the importance of elite positions in the orderliness of civilization, the urgency of elite cadre formation in order to strengthen faith and belief as well as faith. This is important to do because of the vital role played by the elite for the advancement of society around them. Therefore, the religious elite, the religious elite, now have an obligation to participate in realizing national unity and are responsible for maintaining national resilience in its various aspects (ideological, political, economic, and socio-cultural)

Abstract

Humans, as rational animals, are unique creatures with obligations and responsibilities. As rational animals, humans can process and solve their problems and strengthen the nature and purpose of their lives. This study aims to describe Karl Theodor Jaspers' views about humans from the perspective of philosophy, i.e., the enlightenment of existence and boundary situations. This article is descriptive qualitative philosophical research relays on a literature study. Literature data, primary and secondary, were analyzed using the philosophical hermeneutic method concerning verstehen and interpretation. This study shows that existentialism does not preoccupy the "eternal nature" of human beings because that nature is considered something that does not yet exist. Human "essence" is determined in human "existence." The "essence" is "becoming," which is unique to humans. Human existence can be seen in several theses, including unique and not objectified, "I" as a possible existence depends on its relationship with other existences, and existence has freedom. Second, humans as dasein are always contained in certain situations; as existence, humans are always encountered within the limits of the situation, i.e., fate, death, suffering, and struggle

Abstract

Technology and social media have become an indispensable part of our lives, affecting our households in various ways. Unfortunately, this has resulted in significant psychological and emotional disturbances. One of the negative outcomes of this is the prevalent Islamophobic behaviour towards Muslims, regardless of their citizenship. This behaviour is further amplified by the rapid spread of such sentiments on social media platforms.  This article seeks to delve into the secular and Islamic perspectives on the history and approach of human psychology, examining the overwhelmed phenomenon of Islamophobia. It begins by defining the psychological concept from both Western-secular and Islamic perspectives, comparing the two ideas with past historical events. The final part of the article explores how the artificial intelligence era has impacted both Western and Eastern populations, highlighting the psychological impact of Islamophobia. The article suggests that psychologists should undertake a comprehensive study to improve psychological therapy, such as Religious-Integrative Cognitive-Behavioral therapy. This form of therapy incorporates prayer, mindfulness, and gratitude scales to help reduce the western service provider violence behaviour caused by Islamophobia mental-illness. This study provides a unique intellectual discourse on Islamophobia’s psychological treatment, which is currently underrepresented in mainstream academic literature.

Abstract

This article discusses Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia's new member recruitment strategy after the government disbanded them through Perppu on Community Organization Number 2 of 2017. The research method used is qualitative through data collection, observation, interview, and document review. This research found that Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia changed its strategy from open recruitment to using strategies through informal groups and individuals in recruiting members behind closed doors, especially after they were banned by the government in 2017, namely through the student movement, through the activities of figures in mosques, and women. According to HTI, these three strategies have a safe tendency because they can be done secretly and escape the control of the government and mass organizations that oppose them. According to HTI, the student movement is considered necessary because they are educated citizens who have the potential to become agents of change in society. Meanwhile, the mosque is the center of Muslim activity, where the recruitment of DKM administrators, preachers, and congregants can accelerate the preaching of the Khilafah. Meanwhile, the use of women as another HTI recruitment agent is done because the HTI doctrine believes in the importance of women as pillars of civilization. This article argues that although the government has banned HTI, they are still fighting back, mainly through invisible and covert means.

Abstract

This study aims to criticize and reconstruct the concept of commodification of religion in order to further reveal whether social crowdfunding business activities which are currently booming in Indonesia have become part of the practice of commodification of religion. This research is a qualitative research with a case study approach based on literature studies which is analyzed using data processing techniques Miles & Huberman with three stages, namely: data reduction, data display, conclusion and verifying. The results of the study found that: First, the practice of commodification of religion in social crowdfunding business activities and/or all other business activities must be viewed comprehensively (textually and contextually) from various perspectives so that mal-perceptions do not occur, because the commodification of religion is between marketing strategies, exploitation religion, and the need for religion which has positive and negative impacts according to their characteristics, in addition to the fact that discourse on religion has complexity and is multi-dimensional. Second, social crowdfunding business activities in Indonesia meet the criteria for the practice of commodification of religion, but are casuistic in nature, and do not apply generally to all fundraisers and/or managers of social crowdfunding platforms. The findings in this study are expected to place the concept of commodification of religion in business marketing as a whole, that the commodification of religion is not only a matter of religious exploitation and has a negative connotation. In order not to get caught up in religious exploitation practices, social crowdfunding businesses and all other business people must change their orientation, that business in religion (Islam) is not only about personal gain, but also about the benefit of society and the environment.

Abstract

The emergence of new media, such as social media, has provided a space for religious communities or groups to create religious narratives or religious discourses in the digital realm. Religion is represented in a more contemporary manner, supported by advanced information technologies, packaged, and reproduced in a more modern style. Religious discourse in the digital space has thus made religious authority fluid and complex, no longer rigid and solely held by religious institutions. This condition has given rise to what is known as online authority. Online authority, in the early studies of digital religious authority, is considered by several scholars to potentially shift the existence and legitimacy of traditional authorities that have been in existence for a longer period. Traditional authority is deemed unable to adapt to digital practices. Through a literature review approach, this paper concludes that traditional and online authority are not separate entities; traditional authority can enter and exist in the online domain with packaging, styles, and innovations that align with digital practices. Traditional authority, with its strong legitimacy, is capable of presenting itself in the online domain, being repackaged and represented in ways or styles that are in line with contemporary and modern trends.
